Research investigations being conducted at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana have been recognized at the 36th Annual Conference of Society of Toxicology of India and International Conference on “New Insights & Multidisciplinary Approaches in Toxicological Studies” held in August 2016 at Amity Institute of Environmental Toxicology, Safety and management (AIETSM), Amity University, Noida. The research paper entitled “Evaluation of effect of Emblica officinalis fruit (Amla) extracts against quinalphos-(insecticide) induced oxidative stress in rats” authored by Vinod Kumar Dumka, Suresh Kumar Sharma, Kuldip Gupta, Prashamt S Daundkar, Bhaskar Vemu and Simerjot Singh has been conferred Best Poster Award of STOX 2016. The post graduate students of the Department presented research papers, interacted with various expert delegates of national and international stature and participated in different scientific deliberations.
While discussing about the application of this type of research Dr. S K Sharma, HoD, Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology, GADVASU revealed that India is one of the world’s leading biodiversity centres and the importance of medicinal plants in the national economy as well as their potential for the rapid growth of herbal based drug industry in India has been emphasized from time to time. The use of herbal drugs and natural pesticides having no proven residual effects in various animal products for the treatment of animals and control of insect pests is gaining importance. A distinct advantage of herbal products over synthetic drugs in their lack of adverse effects on humans and animals and also their easy availability. Ethno pharmacology may prove to be an economic remedy for livestock diseases and help to improve the standard of living of dairy farmers by reducing cost of treatment of animals and minimizing production and reproduction losses. The farmers, in general, will economically gain from cultivating the medicinal plants. Use of herbal preparations in organic livestock production will ensure safety and health of consumers, and protection of environment.
To achieve this goal, GADVASU has undertaken detailed research investigations in ethno pharmacology on several commonly cultivated and wild plants of Punjab. Within a short period of time, GADVASU has established itself as a centre for excellence in ethno pharmacology and the research work being undertaken in this field is being appreciated at national level.
Efforts of Dr. H. S. Sandhu, Dr V K Dumka and Dr. Rajdeep Kaur were appreciated during the conference.
