Ludhiana : 30 Nov 2013 (Rector Kathuria//Punjab Screen):  Indian oil launched the 2nd Auto LPG Facility at Ludhiana town at M/s Gill Road Service Station,Gill Road,Ludhiana. Indian oil recognizes the need of customers to get additional facilities at retail outlets so that the customers get all the facilities under one roof at an indian oil retail outlet. Auto LPG is more economical fuel for vehicles and the vehicles on Auto LPG are growing day by day. IOCL has already provided Auto LPG facility at Laxmi Service Station,Ferozpur Road,Ludhiana.

Neither safe for health 
Nor will solve the problems of food security 

Ludhiana: 30 November 2013: (Rector Kathuria//Punjab Screen): The genetically engineered crops are neither safe for health nor they will solve the problem of food security; instead they contribute to lower yields, increased use of herbicides/insecticides, unpredictable performance, poor economic returns, and a progressive monopoly on food by big corporations. They also encourage herbicide-tolerant weeds and pesticide-resistant superbugs, belying their purported goal of "feeding the world". Instead these large food corporations are actually more the cause of world hunger currently, than they are the solution to it. This was said by internationally renowned scientist Padma Shri  Dr.Suman Sahai founder of the Gene Campaign while delivering a talk at a function organized by the Bharat Jan Gyan Vigyan Jatha(BJGVJ) in coordination with Environment Society and Science society  Government College for Girls Ludhiana with the cooperation of Punjab State Council for Science and Technology (PSCST) today on  30^th November 2013. Genetic mutations have occurred in nature in long period of time as a result of laws of nature as per the environmental and other conditions. Nature provided safeguards to any negative effect of such mutations. But the genetic modification in the laboratories is fraught with dangerous consequences and amounts to playing with nature, she warned. Several researches have shown that the genetically engineered food has harmful effects on the health of mammals in general. How can then the human be safe from the adverse effects, she questioned? Big corporations like Monsanto are promoting this with the sole aim of earning huge profits. This will force the farmers worldwide to buy seeds from these corporations. It is pertinent to note that the farmers generally save their own seeds for the next crop. Moreover any disease occurring on such crops will not be easily managed.  The medicines produced by Monsanto and allies will have to be used to treat. The corporation will thus earn double profit. She further warned that the GM crops could be an environmental disaster and bio terrorism imposed by the big corporations. She demanded that the government of India should reconsider its policy towards the GM food.

Dr Rajinder Pal Singh Aulukh – Agriculture Development Officer said that organic farming is the only answer for a healthy food. The yield may be initially low but after two to three years the results are good. Reckless use of insecticides and pesticides has added to the health problems among us.  He also emphasized the need to manage crop residue in situ as this promotes fertility of soil.

Dr Arun Mitra – General Secretary BJGVJ said that in some of the western countries the GM foods are separately labeled and grown. But in Indian conditions it would be impossible to do it. Therefore they have to be shun. He demanded that our universities should do R&D according to our needs and conditions instead of depending on the multinational corporations.

Mrs.Gurminder Kaur – Principal of the college said that it is important for the students to be well versed with the newer happenings around. Such events are helpful in increasing their knowledge and sensitizing them on newer issues.

Maj. Sher Singh Aulukh – President BJGVJ thanked the college principal for her cooperation in organizing such events.

Ludhiana, 30 November 2013:(Specttrum News//Punjab Screen): ‘Love Yoou Soniye’, a Punjabi rom-com by National TV stars Karanvir Bohra, Teejay Sidhu, Raghu Ram and Upasana Singh, is ready for the release on 6 December, 2013. The film also stars Bigg Boss fame Vindu Dara Singh and Shivendra Mahal. This youth-based college film, for the young at heart, is produced by Karanvir Bohra and Teejay Sidhu under their newly-launched banner, Firebird Productions. The star cast addressed a press conference at Bollywood  Tadka restaurant here today.

The film has many firsts to its credit, like the overseas distribution of this film is being done by B4U, a first Punjabi film distribution for B4U. PVR Cinemas is taking care of the national distribution, again a first Punjabi film for PVR. With this film Karanvir and Teejay have opened their own Music Company called Matrix Music.

‘Jhalak Dikhla Ja’ reality show’s star dancer and ‘Saubhagyavati Bhava’ serial fame actor, Karanvir Bohra said, “Love Yoou Soniye is an effervescent, youth centric rom-com. With romance at its core and laughter that drives it forward, this is a movie the whole family will applaud and enjoy. Audiences will exit the cinema halls with their hearts smiling, and a song on their lips. The film may be a romantic comedy but the message it radiates is clear ‘Putting family first, empowers love to triumph.”

This is a fun, youthful, romantic, family entertainer, made in a very easy to understand Punjabi, that everyone can understand, even if they are not from Punjab. With actors from B-town, and international music composers, who have a global following, but are debuting in the Punjabi Film Industry, Love Yoou Soniye is the first film to bring Bollywood glamour to the regional film industry.

Former Channel ‘V’ VJ Teejay Sidhu, who shot into fame by her role as 'Jassi' in Ekta Kapoor's first regional serial 'Kinna Sonna Tenu Rab Ne Banaya'  (2012), said, “This film is actually the launch of 14 debutantes in Punjabi cinema, actors as well as music directors and singers, all are new to the industry.”

For the first time in the Punjabi film industry, a real-life couple (Karanvir and Teejay) are coming on screen as 'reel couple'. Also debuting in Punjabi cinema, is Raghu Ram (Roadies fame). He plays Karanvir's elder brother. He said, “I am really excited to see how people take me as an actor in a fun-filled Punjabi romantic movie.”

It’s music is given by Ishq Bector, Shree D and Harry Anand, while lyricist Kumaar has penned the songs. The movie is directed by Sahil Kohli.
Karanvir further added, “With actors from B-town, and international music composers, we aim to 'up the cool quotient' of Punjabi Cinema.”

A wide array of issues in Obstetrics and Gynaecology were discussed

Ludhiana, 30th November, 2013: (Shalu Arora and Rector Kathuria):The department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Christian Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana conducted CME on “Challenges in Obstetrics and Gynaecology Practice” on the 30th November 2013 in the Guy Constable Auditorium, CMCH, Ludhiana.  This meeting of Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society of Northern India was held under the able guidance of Professor & Head Dr. Sunita Goyal with encouragement and support from Director of the institution Dr. Abraham G. Thomas.  The conference was duly accredited 4 CME hours by Punjab Medical Council.

A wide array of issues in Obstetrics and Gynaecology were discussed.  The CME attended by nearly 100 local practioners as well as medical fraternity from nearby medical colleges.

The gathering was addressed by chief guest Dr. Kim J. Mammen who welcomed the delegates and congratulated the department for organizing the conference.  Dr. Lakhbir Dhaliwal, President of NOGSI complimented CMC for organizing the meeting and emphasized upon role of FOGSI in women’s health.  The occasion was also graced by Dr. Arun Mitra member of Punjab Medical Council

The conference covered debatable issues in Obstetrics and ranging from “1st Trimester Ultrasound, Doppler ultrasound and Near miss maternal mortality”. Burning issues in Gynecology providing insight in to “Infertility, Adhesions Prevention and Genital Tuberculosis” were covered.  Eminent speakers from all over North India deliberated on the same.

The conference ended on a successful note managing to clear a lot of misconception on the controversial issues on the subject.

NCC Activity ‘Run for Fun’

Ludhiana: 29 November 2013: (Punjab Screen Bureau): Running not only stimulates the muscles but also helps in recuperating the shrinking energy levels due to our hectic schedules. Keeping this in mind Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines Ludhaina encouraged their young and energetic NCC Cadets to put their best foot forward and jog on the vestige situated between the lush green lawns of the Nehru Rose Garden, Ludhiana. The event ‘fun for run’ organinzed by KCW, Ldh in collaboration with 3 Punjab Girls Bn., NCC took place today on 29st November 2013 at 09:00 a.m in the morning. The motive behind this activity was to provide cadets with an enjoyable and memorable eco-friendly moments and opportunity to celebrate NCC Week with their teachers.
Cadets not only loved their company in the lap of nature but also learned the discipline of following the traffic rules while running on one of the busiest routes between the rose garden to the college located in the heart of the city. 
The Run for Fun synchronized the latent qualities of the cadets with their exuberance while blending the creativity and enthusiasm for non-traditional fun run that combined the exercise of running and fun-filled activities along the race route.  
Dr. (Mrs.) Varinder Kaur Thind, Principal of the college graced the occasion and showered her wishes while applauding the cadets for their spirited efforts.

Ludhiana: 22 November 2013: (Rector Kathuria//Punjab Screen): The workers in our country have to meet dual challenge of saving the social fabric of the society by fighting against the communal & divisive forces as well as to save the country from economic onslaught by the multinational corporations, this was said by Com Gurudas Das Gupta–MP and General Secretary All Indian Trade Union Congress (AITUC) while addressing a convention here at Punjabi Bhawan today. The UPA-II Govt. is increasingly working in the interest of big corporate business houses of India and the international cartels undermining the national interest. Latest decisions of the Govt. are enough indicators of the rightist shift in the policies detrimental to Indian growth and progress based on justice and equality. These are against the basic spirit of the Indian constitution which speaks of justice and equality as its mainstay.  The Govt. is more inclined to respond to the demands of the international finance capital and the MNCs while hitting the common man hard, even denying them basic amenities like food, shelter, health and education. Therefore there is an urgent need for the working people to unite in strength to lead the struggle against these policies so as to meet the goal of sustainable development in the interest of all the people of the country, he said. On that score, the job insecurity and the job losses on the one hand and increased trends of contractorization and outsourcing,  contractualisation and casualisation of labour is norm of the day. There is attack on unionization itself and pressure on existing unions to suppress and intimidate them to contain their activities. Bringing in FDI  in retail trade will be big blow to more than 4 crore small traders, shopkeepers, marginal and poor farmers, other small producers of goods in home based and small scale industries etc. The government has been responsible for unprecedented rise in corruption at higher places with loss to national revenue and denial of rightful share of common people in the wealth being produced in the country. He further deplored that accumulation of wealth in the hands of few, whereas the vast majority is suffering under acute poverty and unemployment. The latest reports have indicated that 100 top rich families own assets to the tune of 16 lakh crores of rupees whereas 70% Indians are forced to live on meager spending of Rs.16.60 paise per day. With the policies being pursued will further hasten these gaps. 

He said, the govt. continues to act in ruthless manner against the common people and the response to people’s agitations by the Prime minister and some of his ministers are arrogant to the core. Corruption at the higher places has become rampant which is obvious  from the scandal like 2-G Spectrum. The Gas price hike in connivance with the Ambanis will cost a loss of nearly 2.20 lakh crores to the exchequer, he highlighted.

Taking advantage of this situation the rabidly communal RSS and BJP have floated Modi as their Prime ministerial candidate. This is a very serious danger before the nation which the workers have to fight back tooth and nail.

In this background the Trade Unions have decided to intensify their joint agitations and march to Parliament on 12th December 2013 on the charter of demands which includes seeking check on price rise of essential commodities, end to labour law violations, for social security and pension to all workers, abolition of any ceiling on Provident Fund, gratuity and bonus, abolition of contract labour, steady regularization of them and equal pay for equal work, no disinvestment of public sector/ govt. sector enterprises and resources, national minimum wage to be raised to not less that Rs. 10,000, universal entitlement of maternity benefit to working women etc.

Addressing the gathering Com Bant Singh Brar - President  and Com Nirmal Dhaliwal - General Secretary of Punjab unit of AITUC said that the state govt. of Punjab is not following a different course as regards the economic policies in general are concerned. Rather it has been taking anti labour and anti farmer measures. They informed that several more conventions will be held in the state on these issues, where Com Gurudas Dass Gupta MP, General Secretary AITUC will address.

Today’s convention was attended by representatives of various organisations of workers and employees from Construction, Hosiery, Roadways, PRTC, Banks, Power sector, FCI Palledar, University, PSSF, Govt. Class 4 employees, Corporation, BSNL, ASHA workers  and unorganized sector.

CME at CMC on Neurological Diseases

A Leading Cause of Disability in India

Ludhiana, 17th November, 2013: (Shalu Arora and Rector Kathuria): India, the world’s second most populous country, is facing the emergence of a “hidden” epidemic: disability due to neurologic diseases. The rapid economic, demographic, and social transformation of India in recent decades has already resulted in the double burden of unresolved epidemics of infectious diseases (e.g., malaria, tuberculosis) coupled with rising rates of chronic diseases (e.g., stroke, heart attack). This was stated by Professor Gourie Devi, former Director and Vice-Chancellor of National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore in the 31st Dr LH Lobo memorial oration. She said stroke, epilepsy, and traumatic brain injuries due to road traffic accidents are the major causes of disability in India.  She spoke also about the delivery of neurological services at different levels of care in India.

Dr LH Lobo memorial trust, Ludhiana has been organizing the Dr LH Lobo Memorial Oration and Scientific symposium for the last 30 years, in memory of the late Dr LH Lobo, an eminent and renowned Orthopaedic Surgeon and Former Head of Orthopaedic department and Principal of Christian Medical College (CMC), Ludhiana.   This year the 31st Dr LH Lobo Memorial Oration was organised by the department of Neurology, CMC on November 16th in the hospital auditorium. The inaugural function and the oration were conducted by Shri Sukhpat Rai Wadehra, President, Dr LH Lobo Memorial Trust and Dr MK Mahajan, Secretary, Padma Bhushan Prof JS Chopra, from Chandigarh was the Guest of Honour. Dr S Chopra gave the vote of thanks.

After the oration a CME on ”Management of Central Nervous System Infections” was organised by the department of Neurology, CMC Ludhiana. Prof Satishchandra Director and Vice-Chancellor of NIMHANS Bangalore gave a talk on the neurological manifestations in HIV patients.  Dr S Prabhakar, Head of Neurology, PGIMER, Chandigarh, updated the audience on the recent management of Bacterial meningitis. Prof Mathew Alexander HOD, Dept of Neurology, CMC Vellore spoke about the brain infection following measles virus. Prof Gourie Devi discussed about the various types of TB infection that can affect the brain.

Prof Yashpal Singh briefly talked about the common viral infection of the brain called Herpes simplex encephalitis. Prof Gagandeep Singh discussed various treatment options for Neurocysticercosis(tape worm) affecting the brain. Dr Jency Koshy gave a lecture on neurological complications that can occur due to Dengue fever. Dr DivyaDeodhar spoke about the current treatment of TB infection affecting the brain. Dr Vikas Loomba talked about the emerging infection called Scrub Typhus and its neurological manifestations. A PG Quiz on the Neuroinfections was held during the program. More than 200 delegates attended the program. Ludhiana: 16 November 2013: (Rector Kathuria//Punjab Screen): On the occasion of martyrdom day of Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha,  the Communist Party of India (CPI) and CPI (M) District Ludhiana demanded that the Model Gram Railway Station be names after him as Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha Model Gram Railway Station. Various speakers addressing a public meeting to pay homage to the martyrs of Ghadar Movement called upon the people to unite in strength to save much achieved gains of freedom, secularism, democracy after hard struggle and sacrifice by the people of India during the freedom struggle and for pro-people economic policies for sustainable development of the country by opposing the sell out of the nation by the government through the neo liberal economic policies. Remembering the sacrifices by the Ghadaries the speakers said that large number of youth who had gone abroad tasted the air of freedom in those countries. This inspired them to come back to India to break the shackles of slavery from the British imperialism. They have dreamt of free India which had equal opportunities for all the citizens. But the policies pursued by the central and state government have led to misery of the people and given boost to the already rich and elite.  Throwing light on the ideas of Kartar Singh Sarabha the speakers warned the people against forces of communalism and casteism, which are out to destroy the basic fabric of pluralism and unity in diversity of our country. There are attempts for saffornisation of education. The menace of terrorism by organizations of different shades is a real threat and needs to be dealt with united. The economic policies being pursued by the government have led to concentration of wealth in the hands of a few while vast majority is languishing in glaring poverty. This is evident from the suicides being committed by the farmers in all parts of the country. Education and health have gone out of reach of the common man. There is increasing commercialization of education and health.  If these are not resisted, danger of imperialist intervention in the country’s affairs will further increase like it has through the agreements like the Indo US Nuke deal and we will become junior strategic partners of the US in its imperialist designs. The US is out to do business to save its interest but we have to save the interests of vast majority of our country.   It is time people unite in strength for the defense of secularism, democracy and for pro-people economic policies, if the country has to march forward on the path of sustainable development. The effort for an outright capitalist development model has added to the miseries of the people and increased corruption  to an alarming level and there is rise in crime for greed of a few. Sometimes the poor and deprived are forced to resort to crime either for want of money to full fill basic necessities or out of desperation as a result of apathy by the successive governments. Lashing out at the misrule in the state the speakers warned that this has led to misery of the people and brought the rank of Punjab much low in whole the country. There is rampant corruption, increase in crime; drug mafia sand mafia and land mafia have become very powerful under the patronage of a few at the helms of affairs in the state government. Manish Tewari Inaugurates FM Gold Studio of AIR at Ldh. 

Ludhiana: 9 November 2013:(PIB): Union Minister of Information & Broadcasting Sh. Manish Tewari launched AIR FM Gold Studio and local variation programmes at BSNL Building Ludhiana today. Member Parliament from Fatehgarh Sahib Shri Sukhdev Singh Libra was also present on the occasion. 

FM Gold Ludhiana will help create local programmes keeping in view the needs of the district. Focusing on local issues the channel will broadcast a variety of programmes daily for two hours from 09.00 to 10.00 a.m. and 6.00 to 7.00 p.m. 

Regular features will include traffic & weather updates, tips for good living and popular music. In addition, information on health, agriculture, heritage, art, culture, literature, legal matters, trade & industry & sports will be provided to the listeners. 

On this occasion a cultural programme was organized at Pal Auditorium, Punjab Agricultural University. Pammi Bai, Amar Noori and Lachi Bawa-Glori Bawa enthralled the audience with their musical performances. Bhotu Shah tickled with his hilarious presentation.

DORAHA: 9 November 2013:(*Lakhwinder Singh Bowani): Kirti Kisan Sabha, district Ludhiana, held its meeting at K K Kaushal Memorial Bhawan Doraha. Sukhdev Singh Kila Raipur presided over the meeting. Com. Lakhwinder Singh Bowani state General Secretary Kirti Kisan Sabha, reported on the preparations being done for the district level conference of Kirti Kisan Sabha on November 24, 2013, at Bagli Khurd tehsil Samrala in which about 100 delegates will participate.  
The office bearers of the district committee would be elected at the conference, besides discussing the problems related to farmers and agriculture sector. Kuldip Singh state committee member of the Kirti Kisan Sabha also addressed the meeting and called upon to be prepared for the All India Conference of All India Kisan Federation (A I K F) to be held on March 28,29 and 30, 2014 at Kisan Bhawan Chandigarh.
The meeting demanded a special bonus and compensation for the loss suffered by the farmers of Punjab on Paddy due to untimely rain and storm. Heavy loss has been caused to the paddy during this season.
Jang Singh Advocate, Pawan Kumar Kaushal, Azad Singh Khatra, Surinder Shehzad, Prem Singh and Amarjit Singh Faizgarh also particpted in the meeting among others.

While giving his comments on leadership, Dr. Cheema in his address also expressed the fear that the identity of Sikhs living in Quebec Province of Canada was under threat from the tabling of Quebec Charter of Values in the National Assembly on Nov 7. Dr Cheema said, “The charter is a violation of human rights and will not allow Sikhs and members of other religions to wear characteristic symbols to work. We have raised the issue in the Punjab Assembly and the resolution passed there has been sent to the External Affairs Ministry for the Centre to pursue the matter with the Canadian Government.” It is noteworthy that the GGSSC is coordinating closely with its unit in Canada, to pressurize government authorities in Canada to resolve the issue. The Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle is   working in 9 Countries. It has offices in 22 Indian States and is divided into 5 councils, 8 channels and 54 zones.

  
In the session on leadership, Mr. Ram Singh, Chief, GGSSC and Mr. Inderpal Singh, Chief Collaborator, GGSSC also expressed their opinion on the subject. Mr. Iqbal Singh, GM, Pb & Sind Bank, LHO, Chandigarh said that a good leader should be humble and down to earth as in Guru Nanak’s words these qualities are the essence of all virtues. Today the GGSSC convention saw a session in which Regional, State and Zonal heads of the Circle shared their respective Annual reports and experiences in the field. Challenges being faced by NGO’s and solutions were also discussed elaborately. A session focused on Developing Organisational Skills amongst students and teachers was also held.          

The convention assumes importance as it is witnessing participation of as many as 250 delegates from Punjab, other Indian States and even Abroad. The discussions are aimed at identifying issues concerning people from different walks of life and the country so as to implement initiatives to redress these. Says Mr. Pirthi Singh, Chief Secretary, GGSSC,“One major decision taken was that the Circle will conduct examinations of moral education in 3500 schools & colleges and in this as many as 2,00,000 students from across the country will be targeted. Propagation of languages and culture will be another thrust area. Under this, seminars in the name of the legendry Bhai Veer Singh will be organized in Amritsar, Chandigarh and Ludhiana. The Circle plans to unveil a Hindi Magazine Suchintan in Jan 2014. In an ambitious plan the Circle’s monthly magazine ‘Sada Virsa Sada Gaurav’ will be distributed in 10000 villages of Punjab and other parts of the country. ” The Circle has planned to involve youth in a big way. 50 youth festivals involving 1000 schools and colleges in India will be organized. In these aspects like quiz, declamation, poetry, Shabad, Gurbani Gayan etc will be included. Tomorrow is the concluding day of the convention.

Sign Our Petition Dear Rector - I fought for freedom against the British in 1942. Now, I am fighting to save my home from the Bombay Municipal Corporation. I am 90 years old and a resident of the Campa Cola compound, Mumbai. In just 4 days, the BMC is planning to demolish my home.  They say that our houses weren’t a part of the original plan. The builders who sold the houses hid this from us. This is shocking because the builders and BMC will go unpunished but our legally purchased homes are about to be demolished. The only person who can stop this is the Chief Minister (CM) of Maharashtra, Prithviraj Chavan. We started this petition asking the CM, to pass an ordinance that will regularise the buildings.  This is urgent. Hm.Sc is the Principal of Master Tara Singh Memorial College for Women Ludhiana. is also presently the Member of Senate (Panjab University, Chandigarh) She was 'Nominated by the 5th TEC/UGC Consortium Agreement for the year 2012-2013 for a period of one weak' for a professional Visit to the University of Mauritius, Mauritius from 6th Oct to 13th Oct, 2013. She was the only nominee from the region of Punjab. She was invited to interact with the students of the University on certain current topics of Nutrition. She spoke out her mind on the following topics:-

• Importance of Balanced diet in Adolescent girls and occurrence of Nutritional Deficiency disease due to excessive use of Junk Food.

• Importance of dietary pattern and physical activity of the growth pattern and health related fitness in Children.

• Management of Obesity

• Role of Fiber in Diet. Her main stress was on the excessive use of Junk Food by adolescents which has a very adverse effect on the nutritional status of our teenagers and youth. She told that the students raised many queries which she answered to her best.
