University will truly attain the status of Nalanda of yore

27-August-2016 17:58 IST
Universities Must Be Bastions of Free Speech And Expression, Says President
The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee addressed the first convocation of Nalanda University and laid the foundations stone of its new campus today (August 27, 2016) at Rajgir, Nalanda.
Rajgir (Bihar): 27 August 2016: (PIB//Punjab Screen Bureau):
Speaking on the occasion, the President said as Visitor to Nalanda University, it is his hope that this University will truly attain the status of Nalanda of yore. There are many practices of ancient Nalanda which are worthy of emulation by the new Nalanda. One of the most important characteristics of ancient Nalanda was that it was an international institution where inter-Asian connections, in particular, flourished. Chinese monks like Xuan Zang, Yijing and Huichao among others visited, lived, studied and taught in Nalanda. At a later period, scholars from Tibet kept coming to Nālandā for studying Buddhism and other branches of knowledge. Monks from several other countries including Sri Lanka also came to Nālanda, revealing the diversity of religious and cultural influences on the institution. And, the traffic was not just in one direction. Monks from Nālandā spread their wisdom across the world and had reached China before Xuan Zang’s visit to India.

The President said ancient Nalanda was known for the high level of debate and discussion it nurtured. It was not a mere geographical expression but it reflected an idea and a culture. Nalanda conveyed the message of friendship, cooperation, debate, discussion and argument. Discussion and debate are part of our ethos and life.

The President said though the main subjects of study were the Buddhist texts, importance was also given to critiques of Buddhism by various schools, study of Vedas and beyond. The lesson for modern Nalanda is to ensure that this great tradition finds new life and vigour within its precincts. Universities must be the bastions of free speech and expression. It must be the arena where diverse and conflicting schools of thought contend. There should be no room for intolerance, prejudice and hatred within the spaces of this institution. Further, it must act as a flag bearer for the coexistence of multiple views, thoughts and philosophies.

The President said Nalanda was a melting pot of civilizations and modern India should remain the same. We should not close our windows and yet we should not be blown off by winds from outside. We should let the winds flow freely from all over the world and get enriched by them. We should embrace free discussion and debate leaving behind narrow mindsets and thoughts.

Accelerated rise in patients of chronic liver disease in Punjab

Dr.  Malhi expressed his concerns on situation

Ludhiana: August 20 2016: (Punjab Screen Team):
The team at SPS Hospitals, Ludhiana has successfully performed its first liver transplant surgery. Under the stewardship of Dr. Subash Gupta, Director, Centre for Liver and Biliary Sciences, New Delhi, led by Dr. Arindam Ghosh, Senior Consultant, Liver Transplant & G.I. Surgery & Dr. Nirmaljeet Singh Malhi, Senior Consultant & Head, Department of Gastroenterology. As a team they have successfully given a new lease of life to a patient suffering from end stage liver disease, due to chronic HCV infection.

Dr. Gupta is one of the world’s leading Liver Transplant surgeons and a proud recipient of the Dr. B C Roy award. Speaking on the occasion Dr. Subash Gupta added “Our endeavour has been to offer a comprehensive program that takes care of all liver diseases from babies to the geriatric age group. Thought our foray into Ludhiana, we wish to establish a liver transplant program of repute to serve the people of this region and beyond”
Dr. Arindam Ghosh SPS Hospitals said, “the success of this liver transplant exhibits the high quality, safety, reliability and affordability of our healthcare services. This world class liver transplant program at Ludhiana will not only benefit the people of Punjab but will also cater to the needs of those requiring liver transplants from the neighbouring states of Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Rajasthan”.
Dr. Nirmaljeet Singh Malhi expressed his concerns regarding accelerated rise in number of patients of chronic liver disease in Punjab. He informed that Hepatitis C, alcoholism and obesity (metabolic syndrome) are three major culprits for liver damage in our state. According to Dr. Malhi, need for awareness among public, regular testing for disease evaluation and early treatment can reverse/ delay the progression of disease. But in advanced cases, the only ray of hope is liver transplantation.
End stage liver disease is a potentially fatal condition in which there is a progressive loss in liver function over a period of months or years. According to Dr. Arindam Ghosh, in such situations the liver is no longer able to work at a level needed for day-to-day life.
According to Dr. Ghosh, with improvement in surgical techniques this operation ensures safety of both the donor and recipient of liver transplant with excellent short and long term outcomes. He further added that liver donation is absolutely safe and remaining liver of donor as well as the liver donated to recipient regenrates to its normal in few weeks and recipient & donor can lead normal life afterwards.
Commenting on the occasion Dr. Ubaid Hamid, Medical Superintendent, said, “we have established the most up to date and state of the art infrastructure geared towards undertaking successful liver transplants with the highest level of clinical excellence and highest standards of patient safety.
Patient Swaran Kaur (name changed) was diagnosed as decompensated chronic liver disease due to Hepatitis C virus infection. She was admitted multiple times due to various complications. Her chances of survival beyond 3 months looked very bleak due to her advanced liver disease. After proper councelling her daughter Jaspreet Kaur(name changed) gave her half of her liver for living donor liver transplant for her mother. Both recipient mother and donor daughter recovered well after surgery.
SPS Hospitals,Ludhiana have started Liver clinic where chronic liver disease patients will be jointly seen by Medical gastroenterology & Hepatology and Liver Transplant Team and will be given state of art world class treatment.

"Torch bearer of India's freedom struggle."

Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji, the master planner of freedom movement in India
Dowryless, Inter-caste marriage system introduced by Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji
The Namdhari Sikhs known as Kukas in the political annals of India are rightly called "Torch bearer of India's freedom struggle."Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji, the master planner of freedom movement in India, founded Namdhari Sect on 12th April, 1857, at Sri Bhaini Sahib (Dist.Ludhiana, Punjab). At that time,India was under the yoke of British Empire.Simultaneously, the people of India were depressed under the evil customs of the society also.
Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji mobilized the people for the freedom of their country and against the evil customs of the society as well.He inculcated religious awareness among the people because it evokes the feeling of self- respect and sacrifices for the sake of the country. In a short period, lacs of people flocked to him and they became fully aware of their serfdom and of bondage.
Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji with his Subas
In the 19th century, killing girl-child in infancy and her sale-purchase was a daily occurrence in India. The main cause behind these pernicious customs was the enormous burden of marriage expenses and illiteracy. Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji laid emphasis on the education of both boys and girls. He introduced a new expense-less system of mass marriages which is called "Anand Kaaraj". The dowry, marriage procession and various other formalities associated with wed-lock were stopped. The first ever intercaste mass marriages were performed on 3rd June, 1863 in village Khote distt. Ferozepur, Punjab. Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji made every effort to give respect and equal status to women in the society. S.Kapoor Singh I.C.S. writes in his book 'Sapat Sring', "If we set aside all good deeds of Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji on one side which he preached for goodness of whole mankind and the country, only his preaching for equal rights for men and women in the society take him to list of supreme reformers of the world". The preaching of Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji, changed the feelings of public.

"When first heard of as a successor of Balak Ram of Hazro, he was known as Ram Singh Mahant, afterword as Guru Ram Singh, then as Satguru Ram Singh and now as Satguru Badshah".

[Lt.Gen.Meck Andrew-DIG.Ambala Circle]

Mr.J.W.Mechab, Commissioner Ambala had mentioned in his report dt.4.11.71.
"I see in earlier papers that Ram Singh was looked upon as a successor or actual re-embodiment of Guru Nanak the sant. He is now the representative of Guru Gobind Singh the warrior". Actually,"The object of Ram Singh and his disciples were not merely religious, but that under the guise of a religious reformer and teacher of moral precepts, he harboured deep political design".

NON CO-OPERATION MOVEMENT
S.Warayam Singh at the time
executions in Malerkotla on
18th Jan,1872

Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji was the pioneer and first in the world history who used Non Co-operation as a weapon to free his country from the yokes of British Empire. It was much earlier than Mahatma Gandhi Ji talked of it.Dr.Rajinder Prasad, the first President of India, wrote in 1935 in his article in "The Satyug."

"Guru Ram Singh believed in the political freedom as part of religion. The organisation of the Namdhari became considerably strong. The movement of Boycott and Non-Co-operation, which Mahatma Gandhi started so vigorously in our times was preached by Guru Ram Singh 50 years ago as cult for the Namdharis.Guru Ram Singh's Non-Co-operation movement contained the following five essentials:-
1.  Boycott of Government service.
2.  Boycott of educational institution opened by British.
3.  Boycott of Law-courts started by British.
4.  Boycott of foreign made Goods.
5.  Boycott of obey and resist the Laws & orders which owns conscience abhors.
NAMDHARI SIKHS ARE SEDIATORS
Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji, set up his own postal system. Diplomatic relations were established with native states & neighbouring countries such as Nepal, Afganistan & Russia etc. In 1869-70 a seperate regiment "KOOKA PLATOON" was created in Kashmir state."His excellency (Sri Jung Bahadur) appeared to have been impressed with a sense of strength & standing they (KOOKA) had already obtained in the country". He further remarked "They (KOOKA) would probably prove a source of trouble to the British Government".(Col.R.C.Lawrence C.B., British residence at Nepal, mentioned in his letter dt.27/11/1871.)

Namdhari Sikhs putting the silky string around their necks themselves at  Amritsar on 15th September, 1871

To consolidated their power, the Britishers had adopted the policy of dividing the population on religion and communal basis. They first issued orders that "No one should be allowed to interfere with the practice by his neighbour and of customs, which that neighbours religion either enjoins or permits". Then Muslims were encouraged to practice cow killing. This was totally against the religious practices and sentiments of Hindus and Sikhs. Namdhari Sikhs understood the policy of British Government. Namdharis revolted against British Rule. They raided the slaughter house at Amritsar on 15th June, 1871 and then Raikot on 15th July,1871. The British Government reacted quickly. But could not able to arrest the real persons who had raided the slaughter houses. As per British Govt. document No.1060, Dated 10/09/1871, "No evidence was available in the case, till on the order of the Guru Ram Singh, the real culprits (Namdhari) presented themselves before the judge". Three Namdharis were hanged on 5th August 1871 ar Raikot, four at Amritsar on 15th September 1871 and two at Ludhiana on 26th November, 1871
Janamashtami byNamdharis on August 28
Under the leadership of S.Hira Singh and S.Lehna Singh, Namdhari Sikhs attacked Malerkotla on 15th January,1872. There was a fierce fighting. The Kukas fought bravely, persons from both the sides were killed. S.Hira Singh also lost his left arm.In the evening, this group of Namdharis went to village Rarh. S.Hira Singh addressed the group."We had achieved our target. We had conveyed our feelings to the British Government that now the Indians had woken up. They would neither tolerate foreign rule nor hurt to their religious sentiments and self respect".Then all of them resolved to surrender before the authority. At that time the ruler of Malerkotla State was a minor.Mr.Cowen was working as a Superintendent of the Council of Administration. He immediately sent the force to bring all the arrested Namdharis revolutionists to Malerkotla parade ground. He had got nine cannons from neighbouring state. He had made up his mind to blow all the rebels Namdharis with cannons who had attacked Malerkotla. It was evening of 17th Jan.1871, when the brave Namdharis reached the parade ground of Malerkotla. Now a days this ground is known as "Kukian da Shaheedi Rakkar".Mr.Cowen conducted no trail. Even the name of persons were not recorded. He immediately ordered to tie the rebels Namdharis to the cannon's mouth. But the Namdharis refused saying"They would come to the cannons mouth themselves turn by turn". Once again Mr.Cowen proposed them to stand with their backs to the cannons. But again the Kukas replied that only the cowards die a death by receiving the shots on the backs. They would die a brave death getting the shots in their chests. Before order to shoot,Mr.Cowen questioned group leader S.Hira Singh,'Why they had attacked Malerkotla?'.S.Hira Singh replied very firmly and boldly, "We want rule of their own brothers ................your justice is lie.Your death and down fall is near .....................We shall be born again, hold the sword in our own hands and wage a war which will destroy your rule." Then seven cannons were set to fire and seven were blown. Seven times the seven cannons were set to fire and all the times seven Namdharis i.e.49 in total bestowed their lives for the independence of India. A young boy of twelve, Bishan Singh was asked by Mr. & Mrs.Cowen to renunciate Guru Ram Singh Ji and Namdharism to save his life. As soon as Bishan Singh heard these words which insulted his master, his eyes became balls of fire. Like a lion, with a leap he pounced on Mr.Cowen and caught hold of his beard and pulled it so hard that Mr.Cowen's life was put in danger. Mr.Cowen wrote about this incident as,"One man escaped from the guards and made a furious attack on me, seizing me by the beard and endeavouring to strangle me and as he was a very powerful man. I had a considerable difficulty in releasing myself".Mr.Cowen was saved by native officers who cut the hands & head of Bishan Singh with their swords. Next day, on 18th January, 16 more Namdharis were blown off with the cannons. On this day, S.Waryam Singh was rather short. He was asked to go back as he fallen short of cannon range. As a matter of fact,he was related to the Maharaja of Patiala, so Warayam Singh was asked to go back. Warayam Singh ran at once, brought some pebbles and sods of earth from the nearby fields and prepared a small platform. Standing upon it, he challanged the gunman to fire as his height was now match with the level of cannon mouth.

The government was waiting since long time for an appropriate opportunity. The government took this occasion of Malerkotla as affording an opportunity for exercising its absolute power for crushing the Namdhari Sikhs.Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji and prominent Subas were arrested and exiled.

Shri Satguru Ram Singh Ji exiled to Burma from Calcutta Port in March 1872.The residence of Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji, now called Gurudwara Sri Bhaini Sahib,(Dist.Ludhiana, Punjab) was raided by the police. A strong police post was stationed at the main gate of residence of Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji,which remained there for full 50 years. Namdharis were ordered not to hold meeting and leave place of their residence without informing the police or village head. More than five Namdhari Sikhs could not assemble at a place. The whole Namdhari community was treated like sediators. Hundreds of Namdhari Sikhs were sent to jails or deported to Andemann Island and their properties were seized. But Namdharis were undaunted by rigrous imprisioned life and the prosecution of the police. They continiously fought for the freedom of India under the benign & inspiring guidance of Satguru Hari Singh Ji & Satguru Partap Singh Ji. "The truth is that it is not possible for a kuka to be loyal subject of the British Government," (In "Ludhiana District GAzetteer-1904)In the mean time,Indian National Congress had been organised. Namdhari Sikhs joined hands with the Congress. They organised number of conferences at various places in Punjab at arouse the people against the British tyrrany. In 1925, the congress started a special campaign from Bradella Hall in Lahore. Namdharis participated in this movement fully, stood at the forefront and faced arrests. In Dec.1929 Annual Session of congress was organised in Lahore. Namdhari Sikhs had not only taken part in the session but also provided free food to every participant. The Daily Tribune, Lahore published a news on 27.12.1929,"Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru was riding a horse. It was a beautiful white charger. Behind him were the G.O.C and other officers of the volunteers corps. The most striking feature was the Sikh cavalary dressed in white spotless khadi and wearing stylish turbans. The Namdharis with their flowing beards presenting a thrilling sight."At State people Conference on 17th Feb.1939 in Ludhiana, a great procession was organised in protest of British rule in India. Pt.Nehru was heading this procession. When Netaji Subash Chandra Bose organised the AZAD HIND FAUJ with its centre in Bangkok (Thailand),Namdharis of Thailand help him all the way.Subash Chandra Bose said that, "The banner for freedom given to Indians by Satguru Ram Singh and the sacrifices done by Namdhari Sikhs will be a matter of great pride for the Indians. The Namdhari Sikh, experienced for three quarters of century for their peaceful non-co-operation movement, are expected to carry forward the banner of freedom in the forefront and will encourage sacrifices. Guru Ram Singh is the first leader of the peaceful non-co-operation movement in India."In 1945, Vavel Conference was held in Shimla. All the patriots and political parties participated in the conference. Sri Satguru Ram SIngh Ji,also reached Shimla with Namdhari Sikhs. Pt.Nehru asked Sri Satguru Ji,"What do you want? What are your dreams?" 'Satguru Partap Singh Ji replied him,"My want, wish and demand is only India's freedom'. On account of these pioneering efforts & sacrifices of Namdharis and all other patriotic forces,India attained independence on 15th August,1947. Pt.Nehru had written in the 'Satyug'  "No Indian can deny the importance of efforts put in by Satguru Ram Singh and his followers Namdhari Sikhs, seventy five years ago in acheiving freedom of the country. Congress merely followed the path shown by them and attained Independence." Mrs.Indira Gandhi, the late Prime Minister of India hadn said on March 16,1981,"Our freedom movement gathered strength by attracting every important section of society from every region. Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana:

17-August-2016 14:49 IST
A Giant Step Towards Better Life For All
                                                                         -Ajay Mhamia*
Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana was launched by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi on May 1st, 2016 in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh. Subsequently, it was launched in West Bengal, on the eve of Independence Day, on 14th August, 2016 at Nazrul Manch in Kolkata. The initiative, in line with the dream of the Prime Minister of creating smoke-less villages across the country, has come as a moment of pride for the women in BPL- households for getting LPG connection as an identity of their own and to lead a smoke-free, less polluted, convenient and healthy life.
In West Bengal there are around 2.3 crore households and 1.06 crore are target beneficiaries which are to be covered in PMUY by 2019. The oil marketing companies (OMCs) have 10 Bottling Plants in the State, with a combined capacity of  990 TMT PA, for the existing LPG customers. In view of the increased need as per the PMUY targets, all OMCs will expand their bottling capacity in coming days to cater to the increased demand for LPG cylinders. Already, more than 6.5 lakh applicants’ waiting list is available with the PMCs. The Government has directed them to ensure sufficient inventory of cylinders, regulators and allied equipment.
To carry the scheme forward and implement it on mass level, special Ujjwala Melas for distributing LPG connections to identified beneficiaries under PMUY have been organised at all the LPG distribution outlets between 15th and 17th August 2016. Under the Government directive, local freedom fighters, ex-servicemen and widows of army martyrs have been invited to attend these melas to mark the 70th Independence Day.

The main mantra of this scheme is Swacch Indhan, Behtar Jeevan – Mahilaon ko mila samman. On the national level, 5 crore LPG connections will be provided in the next 3 years to eligible BPL households. The scheme provides a financial support of Rs. 1600 for each LPG connection to the eligible BPL households. The connections under the scheme will be given in the name of women-head of the households. The OMCs will provide EMI facility for meeting the cost of stove and the first refill.

The scheme is aimed at replacing the unclean cooking fuels used in the most underprivileged households with clean and more efficient LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas). Ensuring women’s empowerment, especially in rural India, the connections will be issued in the name of women of the BPL households. The identification of eligible BPL families will be made on Social-Economic Caste Census (SECC) data that is being provided by the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. To carry the scheme forward and implement it at the grass root level, District Nodal Officers (DNOs) of the Oil Marketing Companies have been appointed in each and every corner across the country. These officers are the torch bearers for implementation of PMUY.

Union Government has already allocated Rs. 2000 crore for the financial year 2016-17 for nation-wide implementation of the Ujjwala Yojana. The Government will distribute LPG connections to about 1.5 crore BPL families within the current financial year. A total budgetary allocation of Rs. 8000 crore has been made by the Government for overall implementation of this scheme over the next three years. The scheme is implemented using the money saved in LPG subsidy through the ‘Give-it-Up’ campaign. This is for the first time that the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has launched such an enormous scheme. PMUY aims at empowering the women and protect their health by reducing the serious health hazards associated with the cooking based on fossil fuel. The other aims of this scheme are to reduce the number of deaths resulted by the use of unclean cooking fuel and preventing toddlers from acute respiratory illness caused due to indoor air pollution caused by the unclean cooking fuel.

The eligible women candidates from BPL families can apply for the scheme by filling up the Ujjwala Yojana KYC application form. The interested candidates need to fill the two-page application form and attach required documents along with the form. The basic details such as name, contact details, Jan-Dhan or other Bank account number, Aadhar card number etc are needed to fill in the application form. The applicants also need to mention their requirement cylinder type i.e. 14.2 KG or 5 KG. The KYC Application forms for Ujjwala Yojana can also be downloaded online and submitted to nearest LPG outlet along with copies of the required documents.

The mandatory documents that are to be attached with the application form include BPL certificate authorised by municipal chairperson or Panchayat Pradhan, BPL Ration card, one photo ID proof such as Voter I-card or Aadhar card and one recent passport size photograph of the applicant.

Indian is home to more than 24 crore households out of which about 10 crore are still deprived of LPG as cooking fuel and have to rely on firewood, coal, dung – cakes etc. as primary source of cooking. After the national launch of PMUY by the Prime Minister, the scheme has also been launched in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat in May and in Uttarakhand, Odisha and Bihar during June 2016. Prior to its state-wide launch made in West Bengal last Sunday, the scheme was also started in Madhya Pradesh last month. (PIB)

2016-08-17 17:56 GMT+05:30
Chief Minister holds Sangat Darshan in Khanna constituency
Congress had backstabbed Sant Longowal
People would teach beffitting lesson to "Anti-Punjab" Congress and "AAP
Harion (Ludhiana): 17 August 2016:
While claiming one sided victory for Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janta Party coalition in the upcoming Vidhan Sabha elections, Chief Minister Mr Parkash Singh Badal today said that people would teach befitting lesson to both Congress and Aam Aadmi Party. He said that the people have already seen the anti-Punjab approach of the Congress party and now the Aam Aadmi Party's stand against Punjab over the river waters issue has unmasked their real face.
While speaking to media persons on the second day of his Sangat Darshan programme in Khanna constituency, the Chief Minister, while replying to a question as to which political party would pose real threat to the SAD-BJP in the upcoming Vidhan Sabha elections, said that their coalition would have a one sided clean sweep as people have already seen the Anti-Punjab face of both Congress and Aam Aadmi Party and that is why people have rejected them completely.
On a question related to distribution of tickets to youth for upcoming Vidhan Sabha elections, Chief Minister Mr Parkash Singh Badal said that their party has promoted many youngsters and the candidates would be chosen amongst those who could score a victory.
While replying to another question related to the Congress party claim that they would waive off debt of farmers after coming to power, Mr Badal said that the Congress party did not do anything for the welfare of farmers during their more than 50 years of rule and so the Congress leaders should not make such false claims. While terming the Congress claims as pure lies, Mr Badal said that Capt Amarinder had stopped free electricity to farmers that was given at the time of SAD-BJP government, immediately after coming back to power. While taking of steps taken by the state government for the benefit of farmers, Mr Parkash Singh Badal said that the government is currently giving a subsidy worth Rs 5000 crore for tube wells of farmers. He said that now the government is providing interest free loan up to Rs 50,000, besides free health treatment of up to Rs 50,000 to farmers. He said that there is also a provision of an insurance of Rs 5 lakh in case the head of family dies in an accident or incapacitation.
While addressing the people of different villages, Mr Parkash Singh Badal appealed them to take any political decision carefully. He appealed that they should choose only those parties which have stood by them during their testing times as one wrong decision can prove fatal for them as well as for the state.
The Chief Minister said that the Congress party has damaged the state politically, religiously as well as economically. He said that first the party ordered army attack on Shri Harimandir Sahib, which directly hit the Sikhs and later, ordered killing of innocent Sikhs in Delhi. He said that Congress even backstabbed our great leader Sant Harchand Singh Longowal. He said that it was the Congress which made the Rajiv-Longowal pact, and later, did not stand by it. He said that the Congress is still dilly-dallying the decision of transferring Chandigarh as well as Punjabi speaking areas to Punjab.
In his attack on the Aam Aadmi Party, Mr Parkash Singh Badal said that they are constantly trying to divide the society, but people would not fall prey to the evil motives. He said that the Sangat Darshan programmes are organised so that we can save both time and energy and increase people participation in development works. He said that Punjab is the only state in the country where Sangat Darshan Programmes are organised and they are organised only when people choose him to serve the state. He said that the Sangat Darshan programmes are organised so that people's grievances are redressed on the spot and the accountability of officers can be fixed.
The Chief Minister's Sangat Darshan programmes were today organised in villages Alipur, Gohn, Harion Kalan, Khatra and Majri, where he listened to grievances of more than two dozen panchayats and distributed cheques for various development works. Prominent among those present on the occasion included Chief Minister's Special Principle Secretary Dr S Karuna Raju, senior Akali leader of the area Mr Ranjit Singh Talwandi, DIG Mr S K Kalia, Deputy Commissioner Ludhiana Mr Ravi Bhagat, SSP Khanna Mr Satinder Singh, Senior Akali leader Mr Iqbal Singh Channi, Mr Inderpal Singh, besides several others.

A Real Story--From Clinical Death to Life!

Tue, Aug 16, 2016 at 3:58 PM
Angush was listless, with no pulse, no breathing
We often hear the poor quality of medical education today and often brand institutions on ‘hearsay’ complaints. But the case may be different.
Here is a story of young medical students Allen, Karanvir, Sanal, Akash & Nishit from Delhi, Ludhiana, Kochi & Odissa respectively, of first year who practiced what they were taught in their first year and saved the life of a young boy after more than 1 hour of cardiac arrest with no breathing and pulse following an apparent electrocution in the city of Ludhiana.
Ankush a 20 year old 1st year medical student of CMC who went with his friends to a park in the city in the evening was suddenly found lying on the rail tracks of a toy train in the park. When his friends noticed that he was not with them & turned back, only to see him lie flat on the small rail track. They called onto him to get up as a toy train was about 100 meters away. There was no response and five of them went to see what happened when someone nearby said, “watchout” he may have got electrocuted from the plate in between the rail tracks.
One of the boys had instant courage to pull him out after telling the others, if he also gets a shock, kick them both out with their shoes?!!
But, providence, nothing happened to the young savior, but Angush was listless, with no pulse, no breathing.
The boys started cardiac massage, the other mouth to mouth breathing and the third kept feeling the pulse. The others took turns to massage and breathe. When they saw that Angush suddenly gasped, was encouraged to continue with the process. Few minutes later a feeble pulse was felt!!
Then the boys decided to bring him to CMC emergency No Ambulance around, they carried him on to an autorickshaw on the road and three of them sat with him while two others used their moped & scooter to pilot the auto rickshaw through the busy crowded streets & Jagraon bridge. The pulse disappeared while in the autorickshaw!!  The boys did’nt loose heart but continued to massage and breathe for their friend mouth to mouth in turns.
After nearly 25- 30 minutes they reached CMC Hospital Casualty Services. All the doctors and seniors attended on him immediately, it was around 08:15 pm then he was intubated, i.e. tube inserted in his trachea for breathing, and cardiac resuscitation started. In about 10 minutes the heart started beating again, thanks to the effort of the cardiologists neurosurgeons, and other emergency doctors there. He was totally unconscious & severely acidotic due to prolonged stoppage of the heart.
With hope, he was managed in the ICU, with intensivist, specialists in medicine, cardiology, neurology and nephrology attending on him. He was given due attention to vital parameters and correcting each deficiency and maintaining adequate temperature.
3 days later he started opening his eyes & responding to calls. It is now 10 days he is out of the ICU, eating well and has started to walk. But he doesn’t remember exactly what happened to him!!
A collective effort, the students practicing what they were taught irrespective of their brilliance, often overstated, and an example to many others to act in an emergency & help out others in need.  I do hope it will also be a lesson for all, including ourselves to have our roads maintained without encroachment to allow vehicles to move, for we do not know how many suffer silent death because of our apathy to enforce discipline on the roads & public places.
A word of thanks to Mr. Rai of the Hero Cycles & team who have now barricaded the rail tracks.
