Took collective pledge to fight against HIV/AIDS

More than 60 active volunteers of National Service Scheme of College of Fisheries and College of Dairy Science & Technology of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana observed “World AIDS Day” and participated in seminar on the topic “Getting to Zero – Zero New Infections, Zero Discrimination and Zero AIDS Related Deaths” in Lecture Hall of College of Fisheries. Dr Syed Shabih Hassan, NSS Programme Coordinator, GADVASU told that volunteers made awareness campaign in the campus and took collective pledge to fight against HIV/AIDS in the society and envisaged to organize many campaign/rallies during the month of December every year. Awareness campaign was organized in collaboration with Society for Conservation of Flora and Fauna (SCFF). Dr. Hassan deliberated how the disease is transmitted, which part of the world and Indian states are epicentre of HIV/AIDS, estimated number of HIV/AIDS vulnerable children and adults in the world as well as in India, He motivated volunteers to work towards Zero AIDS infection in the state as well as national level and to sensitize people about AIDS consequences and make the Punjab state free from HIV/AIDS. He explained the initiatives taken by World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and the role played by Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, State AIDS control societies, various national and international leading NGOs for eradication of HIV/AIDS menace from India. Dr. Hassan appreciated NSS volunteers who have played a pivotal role in educating the people by organizing and participating in many HIV/AIDS mass awareness campaign and rallies in Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Ropar, Amritsar, Taran Taran, Patiala, Mohali and Sangrur district of Punjab and adjoining areas of Himachal Pradesh during different occasions under the aegis of National Service Scheme. Out of active NSS volunteers, 10 volunteers have been chosen to investigate and vigilance on possible number of injecting drug users (IDU) in the campus. Dr. Hassan appealed to volunteers to contact social, health care, educational, political, religious organization, medical practitioners, educated people and activists to eliminate step motherly treatment, isolation of AIDS patient in society and to provide adequate amenities to existing HIV/AIDS positive patients in the society. There is a need to make collective efforts to achieve the goal of getting to zero infection by inviting an active working platform of NGOs, politicians, leaders, educated people, government`s officials, medical practitioners to educate the public. Dr. Amit Kumar of college of dairy science & technology and representative of SCFF were also present the occasion.
