Fortis Hospital celebrated World Physiotherapy Week

Physiotherapy Awareness Programme was organised by Fortis Hospital, Ludhiana. More than­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­ 70 patients and their relatives attended the programme. Separate rounds of Interaction were held and a lot of queries regarding Physiotherapy were resolved. The whole session was followed by question-answer round on various scenarios of daily life. Programme was held under the supervision of Dr.Som Gupta Head, Deptt. Of Physiotherapy, Fortis Hospital, ludhiana.
Giving information regarding Physiotherapy Dr.Som Gupta said Why Exercises is important? As we get older, our bodies change in muscle size and strength decreases primarily due to inactivity. Bone mass and density decreases, increasing the susceptibility to fractures. Tendons and ligaments becomes less elastic, making it easy to get overuse injuries. Joint inflammation and cartilage degeneration often occur due to arthritis. Thirty minutes of physical activity a day can help individuals feel good and prevent many medical conditions. Even individuals with chronic conditions, such as osteoarthritis and osteoporosis, can benefit from a balanced fitness program.

Exercise can help you improve your health and fitness without hurting your joints. Exercise can, Strengthen the muscles around your joints , Help you maintain bone strength, Give you more strength and energy to get through the day, Make it easier to get a good night's sleep, Help you control your weight, Make you feel better about yourself and improve your sense of well-being.
Though you might think exercise will aggravate your joint pain and stiffness, that's not the case. Lack of exercise actually can make your joints even more painful and stiff. That's because keeping your muscles and surrounding tissue strong is crucial to maintaining support for your bones. Not exercising weakens those supporting muscles, making your bones more prone to breaking. It improves mind- body coordination, Improves skin, Improves the workings of your   body’s defense mechanisms,  Increases the Oxygen carrying  capacity of blood, Reduces depression & anxiety, Gives you better sex life, Helps in excretion of waste products from the body, Helps in weight loss by reducing the level of body fat, Helps in healthy weight gain by increasing muscle mass, Improves digestion, Improves your sleeping pattern, Slows the ageing process.
Exercise Can Help in;
Diabetes mellitus, High blood press, Joint pain, Osteoporosis, Depression, Obesity, Anorexia nervosa, sports injuries, Indigestion, Certain Cardiac diseases, Addictions, Problems of old age, Muscular coordination problems, Arthritis.

Giving Tips to protect joints Dr. Sanjeev Mahajan, Director Orthopedics Department said that Start slowly to ease your joints into exercise if you haven't been active for a while. If you push yourself too hard, you can overwork your muscles. This aggravates your joint pain. Move your joints gently at first to warm up. You might begin with range-of-motion exercises for five to 10 minutes before you move on to strengthening or aerobic exercises. Exercise with slow and easy movements. If you start noticing pain, take a break. Sharp pain and pain that is stronger than your usual joint pain might indicate something is wrong. Slow down if you notice inflammation or redness in your joints. Ice your joints after exercising. This can reduce swelling and pain. Use a cold pack on your joints for 10 to 15 minutes.

Tell your Physiotherapist if your exercise causes
Persistent fatigue or increased weakness, Reduced range of motion in your joints, Joint swelling, Continuing pain.

Basic types of Exercises
Stretching & ROM exercise: Help maintain normal joint function by keeping normal joint flexibility and range. Keeping a joint in a bent position may temporarily help to relieve the discomfort of osteoarthritis  but holding it in that position can cause long term loss of joint mobility and hinder daily activities.These are basically bending or stretching the joint to a point that is comfortable to go to. Comfort must be maintained. It is also a great form of warm up for other forms of exercise.

Cardiovascular or aerobic: These are good to keep your heart healthy. It increases the endurance of heart.
Strengthening: Some people with arthritis really avoid doing any strength exercises as they feel its going to cause them great pain. A strong joint is going to be a more stable one. Strong muscles surrounding a joint can act as protection, easing the load placed on the damage cartilage, helping to stop further damage. Isometric exercises are done without moving the joint. Basically you are contracting the muscles. These are good as introduction exercises for people who have significant pain and have deteriorated in strength.

Hydrotherapy : Hydrotherapy is basically doing exercises in water. This is a great way to do simple range of motion exercises. It is very low resistance, no stress on the joint, and you can safely move your joint through its range of motion relatively pain free. In the pool you can do exercises from range of motion to resistance training.
