//New Delhi: 22nd February 2022: (Punjab Screen Bureau)::

Samyukt Kisan Morcha has noted with alarm reports emerging from West Bengal that farmers of Deocha-Panchami-Harinsingha-Dewanganj area of Birbhum District are being forced to accept a “compensation package” announced by the State Govt. for giving up their farmlands and pastures on which the State Govt. wants to set up a greenfield coal mining project. It is learnt that about a third of such farmers are santhal adivasis and there is also a sizeable population from the minority community and disadvantaged classes. It is reported that the State Govt. has not followed the legal process of holding gram sabhas, presenting the mining project details and rehabilitation package in such sabhas and obtaining consent from the villagers in such sabhas. Instead, the administration has followed a clandestine process of obtaining purported consent from individuals, which is illegal. It is further learnt from media reports that democratic and peaceful protests by farmers are being brutally repressed by the local police and administration and a reign of terror has been unleashed on adivasi villagers, many of whom, along with activists who are supporting them, have been arrested and jailed.

SKM makes it clear that farmers should not be compelled to give up their farmlands, pastures, homestead and farm livelihood for the sake of mining and industry unless they give their consent through a process clearly laid down in the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013. Samyukt Kisan Morcha shall always work to protect the right and interest of farmers and stand with India’s agrarian society in any crisis they face.

SKM urges the Government of West Bengal to hear the voice of farmers of Deocha-Panchami-Harinsingha-Dewanganj area in a transparent, public and legally mandated manner so that justice is done to farmers. SKM urges the Chief Minister of West Bengal to instruct the local police and administration to immediately stop repression and arrest of villagers and activists and allow an environment of peaceful and democratic engagement to commence.

04th February 2022 at 3:08

Fast foods too should be curtailed

Ludhiana
: 4th February 2022: (Kartika Singh//Punjab Screen)::

World Cancer Day held every 4th February is the global uniting initiative led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). On this day, intention is to raise worldwide awareness, improve education and encourage timely action so that everyone works together to save millions from the clutches of this lethal disease by access to life-saving cancer treatment and care. Created in 2000, World Cancer Day has grown into a positive movement for everyone, everywhere to unite under one voice to face one of our greatest challenges in history.

AGI–The Gastrociti Ludhiana has taken the initiative this year 2022 by launching its AGI –ONCOLOGY unit under the able guidance of Eminent Medical Oncologist Dr NAVDEEP SINGH who has more than 20 years experience in the field of cancer care and treatment. On the occasion of World Cancer Day, a patient awareness seminar was organized where Dr Navdeep Singh stressed upon the role of screening modalities to pick up cancers at a pre symptomatic stage and educated the audience about the newer therapies in early stages of cancer to achieve a complete cure.

This year's World Cancer Day theme “Close the Care Gap”, is all about raising awareness of this equity gap that affects almost everyone, in high as well as low- and middle-income countries, and is costing lives. By initiating a single point of care medical and surgical management center for all advanced solid organ and hematological tumors under one roof, this initiative by AGI (ADVANCED GASTROENTEROLOGY INSTITUTE) team will go a long way to fulfill the needed gap in cancer care in the region of PUNJAB and surrounding areas.

In Punjab, Cancer cases are on a rise. Females are using affected by Breast Cancer followed by Cervical Cancer followed by Uterus, Esophageal and Ovarian Cancer. Out of one lakh cancer victims, 25.8 percent have breast cancer. If treatment is started early, then the chances of recovery also increase remarkably. Breast cancer surgeons, plastic surgeons and physicians specializing in medical oncology play an important role in the treatment of most breast cancers.

In males, Cancer of head neck is followed by esophageal and prostate cancer is most common. Tobacco chewing, alcohol, toxic industrial waste, use of pesticides are among few causes of cancer. Obesity is one cause which is responsible for a large number of cancers. Following a healthy life style with strict adherence to control obesity is the key to keep cancer away. cancer safe lifestyle, Cancer safe culture and cancer safe diet should be adopted as early as possible to keep Punjab cancer safe. Widespread use of tobacco products, alcohol and fast foods should be curtailed. Cancer screening guidelines should be strictly followed to detect cancer at an early stage.
