BSNL Employees Union warned stern action 

Ludhiana: 23-Aug-2013: Three Days Dharna in front of the GMT office BSNL Ludhiana by the Activists of BSNL Employees Union and National Federation of Telecom BSNL Employees Ludhiana entered in Day 3rd today on the call for demonstration given by the united forum of unions, demanding immediate settlement of long pending Demands.
Addressing the gathering Com. S.P. Singh, Circle Secy, National Federation of Telecom BSNL Employees said that while the Employees of BSNL are working hard for the revival of BSNL, the management is discouraging the employees by curtailing the facilities. the Dharna is  being held at allover the Punjab successfully. He congratulated the workers of all the unions for joining the Dharna and making it successful.
Com. Paramjit Singh District President Ludhiana told that the management of BSNL is curtailing the various facilities extended to the staff one by one. Leave travel concession has been freezed, facility of fix medical allowance has been withdrawn. He demanded immediate restoration of LTC and Medical facility all the demands contained in the demand charter. He called upon the Workers to keep ready the forthcoming one day strike in the Month of September, if the long pending demands are not settled by the management.

Vice President Releases the Book

The Vice President of India Shri M. Hamid Ansari released a book entitled “Ghalib & His Times” brought out by Ghalib Institute at a function here today. Addressing on the occasion, he said that this book portrays history through photographs and is a very valuable book for all to know the contemporary history. He expressed his concern that number of Urdu knowing people is getting reduced. He applauded the Ghalib Institute for bringing out such a useful and informative book.

Ghalib Institute, New Delhi since its establishment in 1969, has endeavored to acquire and preserve illustrations about Ghalib’s life and times and his eminent contemporaries. The book has tried to revive through illustration that was lost. India and Delhi of Ghalib’s times is immensely important from historical angle. (PIB)

Addressing the gathering Com. Balbir Singh, Circle Secretary, BSNLU Punjab told that the Govt. is deliberately denying their justified demands. Most of the demands are accepted by the BSNL Management but no action to implementation of the same has been taken so far. The BSNL management is evading the genuine demands of the staff and deliberately delaying the implementation of the decisions taken in the past. He also told that the Dharna in Punjab Circle is highly successful and massive numbers of members are participating in the Dharna.

Three men face imminent execution in india

On 14 August, India’s Supreme Court upheld its rejection of Devender Pal Singh Bhullar’s commutation plea. He is now at risk of imminent execution. The mercy petitions of two other men were also rejected by the President in August, and reports suggest they could be executed on 22 August.

Devender Pal Singh Bhullar was sentenced to death in August 2001 for his involvement in a bomb attack in New Delhi in 1993 that killed nine people. He was arrested under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA), a law that contained provisions incompatible with international fair trial standards, and had no access to a lawyer during his initial detention and trial. He was found guilty on the basis of a “confession” to the police which he later retracted, claiming it was made under police pressure. In March 2002, the Supreme Court upheld his death sentence, though one of the three judges had found him not guilty, saying there was no evidence to convict him.

The President rejected Devender Pal Singh Bhullar's mercy petition in May 2011, eight years after the request was filed. This decision was challenged before the Supreme Court, including on grounds of an inordinate delay in the consideration of his mercy petition. The Supreme Court rejected his plea on 12 April, in a judgement that ignored claims he had been subjected to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. A review petition of this judgment was dismissed on 14 August 2013. Devender Pal Singh Bhullar has been receiving treatment at a psychiatric facility, and a medical board has reportedly stated that he is suffering from severe depression and shows symptoms of psychosis and suicidal tendencies. International standards on the use of the death penalty prohibit the use of capital punishment against people with mental disability.

Since taking office, President Pranab Mukherjee has rejected mercy petitions of at least 19 people. Information about the rejection of mercy petitions is not publicly available, making it difficult to determine the status of individual cases.

In August, the President rejected the mercy petitions of Shivu and Jadeswamy, who were sentenced to death in July 2005 for the rape and murder of a woman in 2001. The Karnataka High Court upheld the sentence in October 2005 and the Supreme Court upheld it in February 2007. In November 2012, the Supreme Court, in a different case relating to the imposition of the death penalty, observed that in Shivu and Jadeswamy’s case, “the circumstances of the convicts were not considered for reducing the death penalty” – a necessary measure courts are required to take under Indian law before sentencing anyone to death.

Their executions have been reportedly scheduled for 22 August.  On 21 August, the Supreme Court will hear petitions from Shivu and Jadeswamy seeking commutation of their sentence on the grounds that the six-year delay in consideration of their mercy petitions was inordinate.

On 22 October, a larger bench of the Supreme Court will begin hearing together the cases of at least 17 other convicts who are seeking commutation of their death sentences on similar grounds.

•  Calling on Indian authorities to retry Devender Pal Singh Bhullar’s case in proceedings that meet international fair trial standards;
• Urging them to immediately halt any further executions, commute all death sentences to terms of imprisonment, and establish an official moratorium on executions with a view to abolishing the death penalty.

Teasing and harassing a girl student of Ludhiana

Police registered the case after 41 days

Ludhiana 18 August (Rector Kathuria) Monica (fake name) Bsc Part II student was harassed and teased by the miscreants who were drinking alcohol when she was watering the plants at her home in Chand Colony, Rishi Nagar at 7 in the evening of 9th July 2013. When the family objected they not only hurled filthy abuses but also beat the parents of the girl in her house. The girl’s family filed a complaint in the PAU police station at 9.30pm. The family was called by the police on 10th July. But instead of registering case against the culprits they put her mother and father in the lockup and forced them to sign an agreement with the culprits. When they objected to this the police threatened the father of his losing the job. When the people of the area approached the SHO he came to visit the site on 16th July. But he did not take any action. On further follow up he registered case on 19th July against the culprits but no where he mentioned the incident of her harassment and beating of the family in the girl’s house.  The case was registered in her mother’s name and not in the name of the victim Monica. This caused lot of resentment among the people who met the ACP Gurpreet Purewal on 30th July. But it is only today that the case has been registered U/S 354 IPC. Reacting to this Mrs.Gurcharan Kochar–President Punjab Istri Sabha, Ludhiana, Mrs.Jeet Kumari, Dr Narjit Kaur–Convener Working Women Forum, Ms.Tajinder Kaur, Mrs.Kulwant Kaur, Com Randhir Singh–Secretary Teja Singh Swatantra Mohalla Sudhar Committee, Com Gurnam Sidhu–Social Activist questioned the security of women in Ludhiana where it takes 41 days to get a genuine case registered. The victim Monica Devi said that she is shattered and has lost confidence on the police who is supposed to protect the women. When her mother was put behind the lockup there was no lady police around. She expects immediate arrest of the culprits. The action taken so far is incomplete. I have strong objection to that I was called to the police station to give statement even though my father had appealed to the SHO to record my statement in my house.

IDPD has condemned the killing of Indian solders

Nuclear weapons could lead to kill 1.2 crores people

Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD) has condemned the killing of Indian solders by the Pakistanis. This has led to increase in tension between the two countries which is detrimental to peace and development in the region. Both the countries are nuclear weapon state and any increase in tension poses the danger of these weapons of mass destruction. According to President Dr. L S Chawla and General Secretary Dr. Arun Mitra Studies have shown that use of existing nuclear weapons by the two countries could lead to death of 1.2 crores people on both sides. We have already witnessed the effect of nuclear weapons on human population in Hiroshima & Nagasaki on 6 and 9 August 1945 respectively. Delegation of the IDPD has been to Hiroshima in 2009 & 2012 and have witnessed with our eyes in the Hiroshima museum the agonizing picture after the nuclear weapons fell in the Hiroshima. Therefore it is imperative that Pakistan government takes steps to avoid repetition of such heinous incident. Both countries must initiate diplomatic efforts to defuse the tension. More people to people exchange programmes should be facilitated to build mutual trust.

Ludhiana: 8 August 2013: (Rector kathuria): Teej Festival cum Fresher’s Party was celebrated at Master Tara Singh Memorial College for Women, Ludhiana to present an authentic Punjabi Culture with the blends of modern hues. The whole atmosphere was filled with gaiety when college girls dressed in elegant traditional as well as western attires staged their dance performances, skit, folk songs and modeling.
       College Principal, Dr. (Mrs.) Parveen Kaur Chawla gave a hale and hearty welcome to the new entrants and also focused on the significance of Teej Festival in Modern Era.
Arshdeep Kaur was crowned ‘Teeyan di Rani’, Harmandeep Kaur and Navdeep Kaur were titled Miss Punjaban and Miss Majajjan respectively.  Ashwarya was crowned as Miss Fresher Shifali & Harpreet Kaur as first & second runners up respectively. Sukhpreet Kaur got the title of Miss Diva whereas Garima was declared Miss Crowning Glory. The tag of Miss Beautiful smile went to Gurleen Kaur.Various competitions like traditional style of pleating hair, Beautiful Pranda, Ethnic jewelry, Mehndi Application, Beautiful Bangles and were held and the winners were given prizes. S. Swarn Singh Ji (President, College Managing Committee) and S. Kawalinder Singh Ji (Secratery, College Managing Committee) graced the occasion and stressed on the need for maintaining our rich Heritage and culture in the Modern times.
     College Principal, Dr. (Mrs.) Parveen Kaur Chawla stressed on the need of being aware of our elementary traditions and values. The celebration was culminated by adding another leaf in the book of unforgettable memories of the college.
