A new blood irradiator developed by Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC), first of its kind in India,  inaugurated by S. Maheshinder Singh Grewal, Adviser to Chief Minister, Punjab on 14th February.

Irradiation of blood & blood products by gamma rays is a new and safe method to eliminate the risk of reaction, known as Graft vs Host Disease (T-GVHD), at the time of blood transfusion particularly in patients going for bone marrow transplant or tissue transplant.

Although widely practiced world over in hospitals and blood banks, the technology is new to India. The irradiator has been procured by a grant from Board of Radiation and Isotope Technology (BRIT) and has greatly helped CMC hospital in its successful bone-marrow transplant programme. About 300 eminent faculty from India are arrived here to attend the two days CME program.

Two Days Bank Strike: Again Total Success

Tue, Feb 11, 2014 at 12:33 PM
10 lacs employees observed All India Strike

Ludhiana: 11 Feb 2014: (Rector Kathuria//Punjab Screen//Satpal Soni):
At the call of United Forum of Bank Unions comprising of 9 bank trade unions, ( AIBEA, AIBOC, NCBE, AIBOA, BEFI, INBEF, INBOC, NOBW, NOBO)  10 lacs bank employees and officers working in public sector banks, old generation private banks, Regional Rural Banks, workmen employees of foreign Banks observed All India Strike on 10th & 11th Feb. 2014  on the following demands:
  1. Immediate Wage Revision for bank employees and officers
  2. Stop retrograde Banking Sector reform

United Forum of Bank Unions (Unit : Ludhiana) hold a massive rally in front of Canara Bank, Bharat Nagar Chowk, Ludhiana.  Com. Sudesh Kumar, Chairman, Punjab Bank Employees Federation,  Com. Naresh Gaur, Convener, United Forum of Bank Unions, Com. Gulshan Chauhan, Com. Rakesh Khanna, Com. Baljinder Singh, Com. J.P.Kalra (All India Bank Officers’ Confederation), Com. D.C.Landra (NCBE),   Com. Gurbachan Singh (AIBOA), Com. D.P.Maur General Secretary, Joint Council of Trade Unions and  Dr. Rajinder Pal Aulakh, President, Agriculture Technocrats addressed the bank employees.
Wage Revision Settlement in the Banks is due from November, 2012.  UFBU has submitted the charter of demands in October, 2012. Indian Banks Association (IBA) has been delaying the matter for the past one year.  When prices are increasing day by day, when the workload on the employees has gone due to steep increase in volume of business, there is urgent need to increase the wages of the bank employees but bank managements attitude seems to very casual.  Nachiket Mor Committee has suggested the Banks should cover all the citizens of this country.  That means that Banks have to open another 50 crores of Accounts.  This will further add to the workload on the employees and officers.  Already, we are dealing with so many schemes of the Government which increased the volume of work. Hence a reasonable wage revision is necessary. Hence we are demanding immediate settlement on wage revision without any further delay.  IBA has offered to increase the wages by 10% which is very very inadequate.  Hence their offer is not acceptable. IBA is stating that profits in the Banks are not good and hence cannot afford to give more wage revision.
Profits of the Banks are on the rise only.  Despite the unfavourable economic scenario, Banks have been earning good profits over the years.

Bad Loans are increasing not because of employees. Further managements are claiming that bad loans are increasing and hence profits are reducing.  Bad loans increase but not because of employees. Employees should not be held responsible for the same.  In the last 5 years Rs. 140,266 crores have been provided towards bad loans from the profits.  In addition, in the last 6 years, 141,294 crores of bad loans have been written off.  But when it comes to our salary revision, managements are reluctant.
Our demands are reasonable  and also negotiable.  UFBU would like to settle the demands through mutual discussions.  But if the Banks do not adopt a fair approach, the employees’ resentment would have to be ventilated through strikes only. We hope that IBA would understand our demands and come forward to settle the demands through amicable negotiations and finalise the settlement at the earliest. Better wages would result in better profits.  If employees are paid better wages commensurate with the prices and their workload, it will be a great motivation and incentive to involve better and this would lead to more efficiency and better profits for the Banks.  Hence wage increase should be seen with a positive outlook.  No Bank in India had so far collapsed or gone into loss due to increase in wages but Banks have collapsed due to mismanagement and bad loans.  Hence our demand for wage increase should be settled at the earliest.

Strike Total success – Total impact. To highlight these two demands, UFBU had given the strike call. The Strike has been a total success all over the country. Banking transactions including clearing operations were paralysed.  Bank branches remained closed.  Normal banking services were disrupted.  All over the country about 10 crore cheques worth Rs. 7,40,000 crores could not be cleared. Government transactions, foreign exchange transactions,. Money market operations, etc. were also affected.  In many places, ATMs did not function or were dried up.  Strike was forced on us.  Since IBA and Govt. did not settle our demands, the strike has been forced on us.   We are sorry that the banking public would have been inconvenienced by this strike but that was unavoidable due to the non-serious approach of the IBA/Government to avert the strike by improving their offer on wage increase and discussing our concerns on the banking sector reforms. We are ready to resolve the issues by discussions.  UFBU is always open to resolve the demands by discussions and negotiations but IBA and the Government should also be forthcoming.  If the same negative attitude will continue, we will be left with no alternative than to further intensify the agitation.

Sahibzaade Baba Ajit Singh ji

Strong, Intelligent and a Natural leader-Dilpreet Singh
Sahibzaade Baba Ajit Singh ji de janam diwas diyan lakh lakh vadhiyaan
When Guru Gobind Singh Ji returned with the family to Anandpur where Sahibzada Ajit Singh Ji was brought up in the approved Sikh style. He was taught religious texts, philosophy and history, and had training in the manly arts such as riding, swordsmanship and archery. He grew up into a handsome young man; strong, intelligent and a natural leader of men.
Brief account of Baba ji in Battles field:
The Ranghars of Nuh
Soon after the creation of the Khalsa on 13 April 1699, he had his first test of skill. A Sikh Congregation ('Sangat') coming from the Pothohar region of northwest Punjab, was attacked and looted on the way by the Ranghars (a Muslim tribe) of Nuh, a short distance from Anandpur across the River Satluj. Guru Gobind Singh Ji sent Sahibzada Ajit Singh Ji, then barely 12 years old, to that village. Sahibzada Ajit Singh Ji along with a 100 men reached the spot on 23 May 1699, punished the Ranghars and recovered the looted property.

Taragarh and Nirmohgarh
A harder task was entrusted to Sahibzada Ajit the following year when the hill chiefs supported by imperial Mughal troops from Lahore and Sirhind attacked Anandpur. Sahibzada Ajit Singh was made responsible for the defence of the Taragarh Fort, which became the first target of attack on 29 August 1700. Ajit Singh, assisted by Bhai Udai Singh, a seasoned soldier, repulsed the attack. He also fought valiantly in the battle of Nirmohgarh in October 1700. On 15 March 1701, a Sikh Sangat coming from the Darap area (near Sialkot) was waylaid by Gujjars and Ranghars. Sahibzada Ajit Singh led a successful expedition against them.

Restoring a Brahmin's wife
In March 1703, Dewki Das, a Brahmin came to Anandpur and requested the Guru to help him in getting back his wife whom Chowdhry Jabar Khan, the chief of Dera Bassi, had taken away forcibly; the Guru asked Sahibzada Ajit Singh and Bhai Udey Singh to help the Brahmin. On the 7th of March 1703, both of them, joined by about one hundred Sikhs, went to Bassi Kalan; they put siege to the village and sent a message to Jabar Khan to return the Brahmin's wife; but Jabar Khan, instead of returning the Brahmin’s wife, asked his soldiers to attack the Sikhs; it was followed by a full-fledged battle, in which Jabar Khan was killed; the Brahmin's wife was restored to him. When this news reached the people, they praised the Sikhs for their role

Battle of Chamkaur
Sahibzada Ajit Singh led one of the sallies and laid down his life fighting in the thick of the battle. Gurdwara Katalgarh now marks the spot where he fell, followed by Sahibzada Jhujhar Singh who led the next sally. - Wiki.

All India Bank Strike Started with rallies and dharnas

A massive rally held in front of Canara Bank Ludhiana
Ludhiana: 10th Feb 2014: (Rector Kathuria//Punjab Screen//Camera-Ravi Nanda):
On the call given by United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), officers and employees in all the Public Sector Banks are observing 48 Hours All India India Bank Strike on 10th and 11th Feb. 2014  demanding

·         Immediate Wage Revision
·         To stop Banking Reforms

United Forum of Bank Unions (Unit : Ludhiana) hold a massive rally in front of Canara Bank, Bharat Nagar Chowk, Ludhiana.  Com. Sudesh Kumar, Chairman, Punjab Bank Employees Federation,  Com. Naresh Gaur, Convener, United Forum of Bank Unions, Com. Gulshan Chauhan, Com. Rakesh Khanna, Com. Baljinder Singh, Com. J.P.Kalra (All India Bank Officers’ Confederation), Com. D.C.Landra (NCBE),   Com. Gurbachan Singh (AIBOA), Com. D.P.Maur General Secretary, Joint Council of Trade Unions and  Dr. Rajinder Pal Aulakh, President, Agriculture Technocrats addressed the bank employees.

While addressing the bank employees, the leaders of UFBU said that in the last round of discussions held on 17th January, 2014, the IBA had improved their offer from 5% to 9.5% on the pays lip component with an assurance to improve further.  It was also agreed by IBA to hold the next round of discussions on 27th instant to carry forward the discussions.  In view of this, it was decided by UFBU to defer the agitation programmes including two day’s strike on 20th and 21st January, 2014. In his background, UFBU held the discussions with IBA on 27th Jan. 2014.   During the course of the discussions, it was urged upon the IBA to improve their offer so that by further negotiations, the issue can be settled at the earliest.  IBA insisted that their demands like introduction of cost to company method, Fixed Pay-cum-Variable Pay based on performance, switching over to mediclaim insurance scheme and  restricting the negotiations to officers in scales I to III should also be considered by the Unions before any settlement could be finalised.  Responding to our demand, IBA came forward with a meager increase of 0.5 % in their offer from 9.5 % to 10 % on the cost of Payslip components. A conciliation meeting held on 6th February, 2014. In this meeting too, despite our best efforts to persuade IBA to improve their offer and to carry forward the negotiations, IBA remained adamant.  In view of this rigid  approach and 10% increase offered by IBA not acceptable to UFBU,  the discussions were inconclusive.  Looking to their rigidity, UFBU decided to revive the agitation and called for 48 hours strike on 10th and 11th Feb. 2014 to press our demand for early wage revision.

Banks in India today have nearly Rs.75 Lacs crores as Deposits representing the hard-earned savings of the people of the country. Hence banking institutions have to be properly regulated. It is because of these defined regulations and predominantly being under public sector, that our Banking system was saved from the global crisis. Because of de-regulation and liberal banking policies, many Banks in many countries including in USA and Europe have collapsed. Indian banks were saved because of our strong regulations and being in public sector. But in the name of Banking Sector Reforms, the Government is taking various steps and measures to liberalise and de-regulate the banking sector. Recently, the RBI has announced in its discussion paper that the Government’s Equity capital in the Banks can be reduced to less than 51% which means nothing but privatisation of our public sector banks. The Discussion Paper also proposes that the Banks may resort to merger of Banks to become international Banks. Our Banks are meant for our own economic development and hence this is clearly unwarranted. Further merger has its own adverse implications to the detriment of the employees and officers working in the Banks. RBI has also issued recent guidelines by which it is proposed to give the Foreign Banks, near national status and even a scope to take over our domestic Banks. Already, the foreign capital and investments in our Banks have been increasing and now the move is to allow the foreign banks to take over our Banks. In the name of Reforms, the Banks are also outsourcing the regular jobs in the Banks on contract basis thus increasing the risks involved. The problems faced in the ATMs on account of outsourcing are there for everyone to see.
Comrades, get into action and make the call a grand success.
