The areas including District Administration Complex, Feroz Gandhi Market, Stock Exchange, PAU and others witnessed blackout on Wednesday after the workers of agency carrying out construction work of elevated road on the Ludhiana-Ferozepur highway (from Octroi Post to Samrala Chowk) damaged the newly laid 66 KV underground cables which were connecting 220KV Ferozepur Road SubStation (located near pillar 87 of the elevated road) with 66KV Sub Station PAU and 66 KV Sub Station Fountain Chowk.

The cables were damaged on Wednesday (March 30, 2022) at around 14 hours.

As a Result, the power supply was affected at SubStation PAU and Sub Station Fountain Chowk and the damage of underground cables indirectly affected the areas connected with 66 KV Sub Station Sarabha Nagar and 66 KV Sub Station DC Complex.

Jasvir Singh, Chief Engineer (Distribution), Ludhiana Central said that the 66KV were laid underground after the dismantlement of overhead lines on the request of NHAI for elevated road but the rash digging with JCB by workers of NHAI in the area damaged the cables due to which the consumers faced sheer inconvenience. Moreover, as supply at four substations was affected, the PSPCL suffered a loss of around Rs26 lakhs (Rs 23.5 lakh revenue loss and Rs 2.5 lakh for repair of cable). 

After damaged was reported, AO/TL, Ludhiana under the Additional Supervising Engineer/ P&M Urban Division, Ludhiana immediately initiated investigation to locate the fault but as the damaged cables were underground and there was heavy movement of traffic on the road, the team had to struggle a lot.  However, the power supply was restored on Thursday (March 31, 2022) morning at 3.28am.

It is pertinent to mention that the Additional Supervising Engineer/ P&M Urban Division, PSPCL, Ludhiana had already written to Project Director/PIU, NHAI, 4-Govind Nagar, Pakhowal Road, Ludhiana via memo no. 1234 dated 23.5.2019 and memo no. 1214 dated 27.5.2020 mentioning that there are 66KV cables laid underground and it should be taken care while carrying out construction work. But NHAI ignored the instructions and the cables were damaged. Therefore, filing of FIR against NHAI is in process.

Deputy Chief Engineer/P&M, PSPCL Ludhiana mentioned that there is another glaring blunder which has already been pointed out to NHAI officials and DC office by PSPCL. The issue is that NHAI had encroached upon the land near Aarti Chowk where 66KV underground cable to DC Complex sub-station is laid. In future if there will be any fault in the cable, it will become impossible to locate the fault and rectify it due to which the supply to DC Complex Sub Station will not be possible as there is no second source to 66KV DC Complex. “As of now, neither NHAI has responded positively on this issue nor District Administration has taken any cognizance on this dangerous situation arising out of sheer irresponsible approach of NHAI,” he said.

He added that the concerned authorities must step into and resolve the issue as soon as possible in the larger public interest as a major tragedy is looming over Ludhiana residents to happen anytime in future.

The Department of Clinical Haematology, Haemato-Oncology and Bone Marrow (Stem cell) Transplantation, of Christian Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana, organized a hybrid, one-day Seminar and awareness program, aptly named “Aasha ki Kiran”. The program was arranged to give hope, optimism and confidence to both patients and family members, that Thalassemia can be cured by the Stem Cell Transplant Process. 

The Department was established in 2007 and the Transplant Program started in 2008. So far, the Institution has performed more than 210 transplants, with 83 transplants for Thalassaemia patients. 

Thalassemia is a genetic disorder that requires lifelong blood transfusions. An estimated 10,000 Thalassemia major children are born every year in India. Stem Cell transplantation can offer a lifetime cure in such Patients. 

More than 100 Thalassemia Patients and caregivers from various districts of Punjab, Haryana and Gujarat, attended this Event.  Most of the Patients were identified from a free HLA Typing (Human leukocyte antigen) Camp that was held in December at Rajendra Medical College & Hospital, Patiala. 

The Director of Christian Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana, Dr. William Bhatti, opened the event by welcoming the Chief Guest Dr Praveen Sobti. He reiterated the vision and mission of CMC Ludhiana. 

The Chief Guest, Dr. Parveen C. Sobti, who established Thalassaemia Care, especially in Ludhiana and Punjab, emphasized that the results of CMC Ludhiana was at par to similar to best centers in India and abroad.  

Mrs Shobha Tuli, Founder member of Thalassaemics India, currently serving as Secretary of the Board of Directors of Thalassaemics India, shared her wisdom and appreciated the efforts of CMCL in the field of Stem Cell Transplantation. Established in 1986, Thalassemics India is working zealously across the country, operating in close association with doctors, Govt. authorities, hospitals, medical authorities, blood banks, thalassemia associations, thalassemia NGO’s & Thalassaemia International Federation.

Patients who are waiting for Transplant at CMCL with an HLA identical donor and less than 12 years of age can now avail Rs. 10 lakhs toward transplant through the the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, who in collaboration with Coal India’s CSR, have funded HSCT (Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation) program, titled “Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojna”. 

Shri Sai Ram, Director, Coal India Ltd., elaborated on the need of increasing the number of transplants across the country and mentioned that there are a total of 9 centres currently approved by the Board.  

Shri Mangala, IAS, representing the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, who also joined the event virtually, pledged his support and consideration of additional funds, to cover the cost of both pre- and post-transplant care of Transplant patient. 

The Deputy Manager, Ms. Jyothi Jothi K, DKMS BMST Foundation India, an international NGO and prestigious partner of Christian Medical College also joined the proceeding and addressed the gathering.

Dr. M Joseph John – Professor & HOD, Clinical Hematology, CMC Ludhiana, gave an overview of the transplant process and elaborated on the available patient support programs currently available in CMC Ludhiana.

Opening Ceremony of planning forum and consumer forum of Govt. College for Girls, Ludhiana held on 15 March, 2022 to mark ' World Consumer Rights Day'. The chief guest of the ceremony was Principal, Mrs. Kirpal Kaur. The ceremony was commenced by President of consumer forum Ishita Sharma and President of Planning forum Shanaya Chaudhary who presented PPT on Ukranian crisis and on rights and duties of consumers. Planning forum organized the Declamation competition while consumer forum organized the Cartoon making competition. Both events drew tremendous participation from the students. The audience was also given the opportunity to provide feedback or demonstrate their abilities. Dr. Jaspreet Kaur, from Home Science department judged the declamation competition and Mr. Parveen Kumar from the Dept. of Fine Arts judged the cartoon making competition. Mr. Gurmeet Singh from the Dept. of Economics proposed vote of thanks and motivated students to take part in future activities.  Cancer Awareness Talks for Women

Punjab Police under the banner of SAANJH on Tuesday organised several activities including awareness talks on cancer, general health and menstrual hygiene and medical and health check-up camps for women including women Police Personnel in all the districts to culminate the week-long celebrations to mark the International Women's Day.

 

A webinar on Cancer Awareness was also organised at Punjab Police Headquarters here in which a Radiation Oncologist Dr. Rupali Aggarwal from Grecian Super Specialty Hospital sensitised Women Police Personnel about symptoms of breast cancer and how to prevent them by intaking nutritious food.

 

Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab VK Bhawra while appreciating all the CPs/SSPs for celebrating this special day dedicated to women in such a unique way said CPs/SSPs have been organizing various activities for all the women in their respective districts focusing on Women Health and Women Education for Empowerment and on the available facilities in Punjab police for reporting crimes and women.

 

He said that in some districts CPs/SSPs have also organised a Special Rahat Camp to deal with women related complaints and several complaints were disposed off at the spot.

 

Divulging more details, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Community Affairs Division and Crime against Women & Children, V Neeraja said that all the district police have celebrated this day with enthusiasm and fervor by reaching out women from all walks of lives and sensitized them on the facilities available in Punjab Police for preventing and reporting crimes against women.

 

She said that Women Help desks in 382 police stations starting from today for the next 3 days shall conduct programs to sensitize women on the provisions of law for protection of women and facilities in Punjab police for reporting crimes against women.

 

Similarly, SAANJH, the Community policing wing of the Punjab Police also organized many events in coordination with NGOs , prominent public persons to celebrate International Women's Day in Colleges and private institutions.

 

Besides, cultural events were also organized by the district police for the women police personnel as part of the celebrations.

In a protest demonstration held here at Ludhiana today the Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD) reiterated that the war must end immediately, the military operation by the Russians should cease and dialogue be resumed between Russia and Ukraine. Any escalation could lead to use of the nuclear weapons, which would be catastrophic. For lasting peace it is all the more important that USA and NATO should stop meddling in others affairs. NATO should be dismantled. The nuclear weapons should be abolished immediately from the earth and all the nuclear weapon possessing countries should join the UN Treaty Prohibiting Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). The UNO should play an effective role in this process.

Exposing the truth of war AITUC General Secretary Comrade Amarjit Kaur  said that the USA and NATO are real culprits of the war. Human Rights and Civil Liberties activist Professor Jagmohan Singh explained the capitalist interests of USA and Nato which provoked the war.

    

The speakers expressed deep grief at the death of Indian student Naveen Shekharappa in Ukraine in the shelling by Russian army.  Still thousands of students are stranded in Ukraine who need to be evacuated immediately. The demonstration was held from Near Bharat Nagar Chowk to Mini Secretariat in which various speakers expressed anguish at that Indian government delayed the evacuation process which is leading to this situation. India has the experience of evacuating 1.7 lakh Indians from gulf during the gulf war. But this exercise requires seriousness and determination. It is unfortunate that instead of taking the evacuation process seriously our Ministers are busy in public relation exercises and show off through the media. Even the Prime Minister is patting his own back for an exercise not even half done properly. Our foreign minister should go to Russia in the spirit of non-aligned movement and appeal to the Russian government to help in evacuation of Indians stranded in Ukraine.   

  

The events have also exposed the government’s policy of privatisation of medical education which is exorbitantly high priced in India. This pushes many students to go abroad to get education at relatively much lower cost. Statement of the Prime Minister in this regard that the private sector should open more medical colleges is against the interests of the students.  It is therefore important that the medical education should be in the state sector.

Literary organization Kavita Katha Karvaan (Regd) (KKK) celebrated International Mother Language Day at the Dr Mohinder Singh Randhawa Art Gallery   of the local Punjabi Bhawan and organized an International Kavi Darbar

On this occasion a Ru-B-Ru with Meeta Khanna, a singer, writer and anchor from Canada was held. She motivated the young writers to read good literature and try to pen down their creative expressions.

Meeta Khanna was appointed as the Vice President of Kavita Katha Karvaan (Regd)’s Canadian Chapter for the Session 2022-23 while Dr Ravinder Singh Chandi was appointed as Secretary of Kavita Katha Karvaan (Regd) for the Session 2022-23. 

In recognition of their laudable contributions for the promotion of Punjabi language, culture and values on the foreign lands, the international writers Gursahib Teji (from Italy), Daljeet Singh and Satbir Singh, both from Canada, were honoured on the occasion with Citations and Robes of Honour by the KKK President Jaspreet Kaur Falak.  

Various literary personalities were inducted into the Executive of KKK that included Dr Atinder Kaur Sandhu (as Coordinator) , Aman Phallar (as Advisor),  Dr  Anureet Kaur Chandi  (as Advisor),   Gurvinder Kaur (as Co-convener) and Bhai Dalip Singh Bikkar  (as Co-Convener).  

The participating poets and the Members of Creative Writers Group of KKK  marked their presence by reciting their poems dedicated to Mother Tongue.

Earlier, the KKK President and Chief Organizer of the Event, Dr Jaspreet Kaur 'Falak' welcomed the participants  and introduced the prominent personalities who came to take part in the programme from far and wide.  She added  that the KKK provides platform to the new writers and  poets for their creative expression through participation in kavi darbars and literary events.

The stage was aptly managed by poet Dharminder Shahid Khanna. Towards the end Dr Ravinder Singh Chandi proposed his vote of thanks to one and all for making the event a success.

Farmers of West Bengal's Birbhum District Should Not be Forced to Give up Farmlands and Farm Livelihoods for the Sake of Mining of and Industry: SKM

Samyukt Kisan Morcha has noted with alarm reports emerging from West Bengal that farmers of Deocha-Panchami-Harinsingha-Dewanganj area of Birbhum District are being forced to accept a “compensation package” announced by the State Govt. for giving up their farmlands and pastures on which the State Govt. wants to set up a greenfield coal mining project. It is learnt that about a third of such farmers are santhal adivasis and there is also a sizeable population from the minority community and disadvantaged classes. It is reported that the State Govt. has not followed the legal process of holding gram sabhas, presenting the mining project details and rehabilitation package in such sabhas and obtaining consent from the villagers in such sabhas. Instead, the administration has followed a clandestine process of obtaining purported consent from individuals, which is illegal. It is further learnt from media reports that democratic and peaceful protests by farmers are being brutally repressed by the local police and administration and a reign of terror has been unleashed on adivasi villagers, many of whom, along with activists who are supporting them, have been arrested and jailed.   

SKM makes it clear that farmers should not be compelled to give up their farmlands, pastures, homestead and farm livelihood for the sake of mining and industry unless they give their consent through a process clearly laid down in the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013. Samyukt Kisan Morcha shall always work to protect the right and interest of farmers and stand with India’s agrarian society in any crisis they face. 

SKM urges the Government of West Bengal to hear the voice of farmers of Deocha-Panchami-Harinsingha-Dewanganj area in a transparent, public and legally mandated manner so that justice is done to farmers. SKM urges the Chief Minister of West Bengal to instruct the local police and administration to immediately stop repression and arrest of villagers and activists and allow an environment of peaceful and democratic engagement to commence.
