An Awareness Walk by CMC Hospital Ludhiana

When life becomes difficult due to the scorching heat, then comes the month of September. In this month itself, the mission of getting rid of this heat is tied. A slight winter is starting to knock. The satiating sweats are becoming a thing of the past. Consciousness awakens in the season from this sweetness. Consciousness of life This month has been chosen to create awareness about being in childhood. In this heena there are things to prevent from this cancer. Efforts are made intensified. CMC Hospital also organized a speech for the same purpose. 

The theme was that September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The mission of eradicating the cancer-born doctor and awakening consciousness is getting stronger. To spread awareness among the society and community, the Department of Pediatric Surgery organized Childhood Cancer Awareness Campaign from Ash Bag to CMC. This event was also very successful.

300 medical and nursing students participated in this walk. Also 50 senior doctors and faculty of Nursing College also participated. ADC Urban Development Shri Sandeep Kumar IAS was the chief guest and also inaugurated the walk.

Dr. Trija Jeevan, Principal, College of Nursing, DMC was also present in the program and participated in the walk. A small cultural program was also organized at Rakhbagh and testomones were given to children who survived childhood cancer.

The walk was also welcomed by the Nature Group at Jagraon Bridge, Raj Kariana Store at Field Ganj Market and Kalvari Church on Brown Road. Many local people also connected with it. Rose petals were showered by Calvary Church and other NGOs on the way to the participants.

Dr Vishal Michael explained the early signs of childhood cancer and emphasized that no child should die of childhood cancer. Dr William Bhatti informed that patients can avail CM fund and PM fund and should not worry about the cost of treatment as many NGOs also help childhood cancer patient. The Department of Pediatric Surgery has all the advanced facilities for the treatment of childhood cancer. Refreshments and snacks were arranged at the CMC for all the participants of the walk. The walkathon was organized by Dr. Vishal Michael, Dr. Tanvi Goyal, Dr. Nikhil, Dr. Swati and Mr. Varun Henry.

Postercompetition on International Childhood Cancer  Department of Paediatric surgery organized poster competition on childhood cancer awareness with department of Paediatricnursing on 15th September 2021. 46 nursing student made postersabout childhood cancer awareness.  Dr.William Bhatti, Director, Professor and head, Dept. of Paediatric surgeryaddressed the gathering about common Paediatric cancers and need for awarenessin community .He also emphasized on importance of early detection andtreatment. He mentionedduring his speech about the comphrensive care given by department of PaediatricSurgery from last 50 years.  Dr. GurmeetChaudhry, Head of Department and Professor, Dept. of Paediatric Medicine toldthat September is celebrated as international childhood cancer month. She alsotold that white spot in eye, lump in abdomen , unexplained fever, weightloss,  fatigue, easy bruising andbleeding are common signs of cancer in childhood. Unlike adult 80% childhoodcancers are completely treatable if detected early. Dr. Parvez David Haque, HOD,Dept. of General surgery also attended the event and took the lead in the Lamp LightingCeremony. Dr. Reena Jairus, Principal, College of nursing and Prof Mrs. Premlata, Head ofChildcare Nursing as well as Mrs Jatinder Kaur from paediatric nursing,  Dr. Vishal Michael  and Dr. Tanvi Goel  from Department of Paediatric surgery also spokeat the event about the theme: Together we fight, We will be Better as also theimportance of nursing in childhood cancers. Prof. Balqis Victor from the College of Nursing distributedprizes to the award winners for best posters.

World Cancer Day Celebrated by Deep Hospital Ludhiana

Cancer Awareness Programe was organised by Deep Hospital, Ludhiana. More than­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­ 70 patients and their relatives attended the programme. Separate rounds of Interaction were held and a lot of queries regarding Cancer were resolved. The whole session was followed by question-answer round on various scenarios of daily life.

Programe was held under the supervision of Dr. Amit Dhiman Director & Senior consultant, Cancer and Hematology services, Bone Marrow transplant specialist

Giving information regarding Cancer, Dr.Amit said What is Cancer? In simple terms, cancer is an abnormal growth of body cells. Each one of us is born with a potential for cancer. One cannot "Catch" it as one would an infection or a cold. When the programming of a cell or a group of cells is affected, growth may become uncontrolled. Some of the factors that can alter the code are chronic irritation, tobacco, smoke and dust, radioactive substances, age, sex, race and heredity. While one cannot control many of these factors , we need to be aware of the ones we can control of. Prevention is definitely better than treatment of cancer.

What Causes Cancer?

Consumption of tobacco especially smoking, which is 1 out of 4 causes of cancer ,workplace chemicals like asbestos , old age people are more prone to cancer, Lifestyle ,diet and some specific type of virus and radiation may also cause cancer . Some cancers are also genetic in nature.

What are the signs of Cancer?

A Persistent Sore especially if it is in the mouth, on the lip or on tongue. 

Lumps or Masses which appear where none were present previously should arouse suspicion of cancer. 

Unexplained or abnormal bleeding from any body opening.

Persistent indigestion or change in bowel habits, while usually due to other causes, are often caused in the intestinal tract and should be reported.

Persistent hoarseness or cough of abnormal duration deserves a careful examination by your doctor.

Unexplained loss of weight may be due to many things but may also be due to hidden cancer.

How important is screening and which all cancers can be screened .

Screening means looking for early signs of a particular disease in healthy people who do not have any symptoms. Screening for cancer aims to find cancers as early as possible - when the chance of cure is highest. There are established Screening tests for breast cancer, cervical cancer and bowel cancer. 

There are also tests to detect prostate Cancer and Ovarian Cancer.

How can cancer be prevented?

Cancers that are closely linked to certain behaviors are the easiest to prevent. For example, choosing not to smoke tobacco or drink alcohol significantly lower the risk of several types of cancer -most notably lung, throat, mouth, and liver cancer. Even if you are a current tobacco user, quitting can still greatly reduce your chances of getting cancer.

How is cancer treated?

Cancer treatment depends on the type of cancer, the stage of the cancer (how much it has spread), age, health status, and additional personal characteristics. There is no single treatment for cancer, and patients often receive a combination of therapies and palliative care. Treatments usually fall into one of the following categories: surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, hormone therapy, or gene therapy

CT University organized Cancer Awareness and Check up camp

CT University Ludhiana in association with World Cancer Care Organization organized Cancer Awareness cum Check Up Camp in association with World Cancer Care Organization on 16 April 2017. The camp was majorly emphasized on Medical Check Up and distribution of medicines free of cost. There were six buses equipped with ultra modern equipment at this event. The Camp was inaugurated by S. Charanjit Singh Chani Chairman CT Group, S. Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal Chairman World Cancer Care, S. Jaswant Sigh Grewal Advisor World Cancer Care, Mr. Dharminder Dhillon MD world Cancer Care, Mrs. Parminder Kaur Co-Chairman CT Group, and Dr. Davinder Singh Sandhu Cancer Specialist.

More than 2000 people from approximately 100 villages participated in the camp. Besides people from Jagraon, Ludhiana, Raikot and Moga cities also came to take benefit of this camp. CT University provided free buses for patients to bring them to the camp. It is to be noted that the Malwa region topped the cancer list, with 14,682 of the 33,318 deaths in 2015. The unusually high incidence, especially in the cotton growing districts of south-western Punjab, has been linked to the use of pesticides by cotton farmers, among other factors. Malwa consumes 75% of the pesticides used in Punjab, shows the State Council for Science and Technology’s State of Environment Report. Under its CSR initiative, CT University and World Cancer Care organized this camp to help the poor and underprivileged people of this region. CT University is a multi-disciplinary, student-centric, research-focused University offering a full range of academic programs at the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level. Fortis organised Cancer awareness programme

Fortis Hospital Ludhiana organised Cancer awareness programme” Khushi ke Pal with apne Doctors on 11th August @ Park Plaza under the supervision of Mr. Vivan Singh Gill, Director, Fortis Hospital Ludhiana. More than 100 people attended the programme. Welcome note was given by Mr. Gill. He said “There are at least 90 cancer patients for every 100,000 population in Punjab. Cancer incidence in the state is higher than the national average of 80 per 100,000 population, reveals a survey by the Punjab government. The survey results were released on January 28”.

Giving information Dr. J.S Sekhon, Director Oncosciences said, “Though several studies in the past decade have shown that Punjab has higher incidence of cancer than the rest of the country, this is for the first time the state government conducted a comprehensive door-to-door survey to quantify the problem. The survey, which also aimed at carrying out mass awareness campaign and early detection of cancer based on warning signs and symptoms, screened about 265,000 people in the Malwa, Doaba and Majha regions. It was found that about 24,000 of them were suffering from cancer. Worse, more than thrice the number—84,453—were suspected to be suffering from the deadly disease.

To accomplish this huge task of cancer treatment Fortis Hospital Ludhiana has emerged as a major hub for cancer awareness, Screening and treatment. A SpecializedBREAST CLINIC is being run in which apart from radical surgery for breast cancer, breast conservative surgery and breast reconstruction is also being performed successfully.”    We emphasize on theCOMPREHENSIVE CANCER CARE wherein state of the art treatment modalities viz chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, immunotherapy and hormonal therapy are available under one roof. All cancer patients are discussed in the TUMOR BOARD and best possible treatment is offered to the patients.

Dr. Parveen Kaur, Senior Consultant Radiation Oncology said, “With increasing incidence of cancer the clinical management of cancer continues to be a challenge for the 21st century. Radiation therapy remains an important component of cancer treatment with approximately 50% of all cancer patients receiving radiation therapy during their course of illness; it contributes towards 40% of curative treatment for cancer. The main goal of radiation therapy is to deprive cancer cells of their multiplication (cell division) potential.”

Speaking on the occasion, the participant appreciated the effort put in by Fortis Hospital in taking care of their patients. Musical Chair, Antakshri and many more were also organized on this occasion.

Staff of Fortis Hospital, Ludhiana also performed on the occasion by dancing to the tunes of Bollywood and Punjabi songs.

Dr Ankush Mehta, Medical Superintendent FHLDH thanked all the Champs for sparing their time and reposing faith in Fortis Hospital Ludhiana.

Walk-a-thon for cancer awareness: a success

Ludhiana, 26^th October, 2013: (Shalu Arora and Rector Kathuria): The festival season has set in the city in a completely different manner this year. The morning walkers in Rakh Bagh and Rose Garden area were up for a surprise when there were more than 300 people to give them company. Can Fight Cancer (CFC)- a society formed with the objective of raising awareness against cancer and emphasizing the importance of early detection and adopting a healthy lifestyle, had organized a walk-a-thon in this area of the city. There is no doubt about the fact that the city, the general public and our society need more and more of such events. A brief introduction about the society was given by Mr Jagjit Sood and Mrs Meetu Nayyar who are the founder members.

Flagged off by Mr. Bharat Bhushan Ashu, MLA and Dr Abraham G Thomas, Director CMCH, the walkathon was felicitated by the presence of Mayor Mr Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria, Mrs Deepika Bhalla and Mr Narinder Sharma. The walk was attended by cancer survivors, their families, families of those unfortunate patients who succumbed to cancer, political leaders, administrative leaders, health care professionals from CMC Ludhiana, senior citizens, KVM students/staff, members of Freemasons Club, members Himalayan Yoga Foundation and other healthy volunteers at 6:30 A.M. The convoy reached the Rose Garden at 7:15 A.M. Once at Rose Garden, a small quiz and interactive session was organized by Dr Kunal Jain with the objective of raising awareness and spreading the message of “Early Detection”. KVM students and general public actively participated in the discussion. Mr Anil Sood, a cancer survivor himself, emphasized the need to carry this momentum forward and continue such campaigns on a larger scale.

The environment seemed to be fully charged with the spirit of young and old alike to take cancer head on despite the losses most of the participants or their loved ones had suffered, either physically, emotionally or financially. It was a tribute to all the efforts of the medical fraternity, the survivors to thwart and overcome this condition and a salute to their bravery, determination and willpower. People from all walks of life expressed solidarity with the cause by marching along the scheduled route which ended at the Rose Garden.

Mr. Bharat Bhushan Ashu applauded the efforts of the society and expressed the need to hold such events more often. A healthy population is important for building a healthy nation. The message that the event is giving is not only awareness against the disease and importance of early detection but also encouraging people to adopt a healthy lifestyle.’

The event was organized with help from CMCH who had the biggest contribution in numbers for this event to express solidarity. Dr. Abraham G Thomas, Director of CMC gave a brief overview of history of CMC and cancer facilities available at the hospital. Dr Kanwal Masih, Medical Superintendent CMCH said, “when our efforts are complemented by the efforts of society at large, no disease seems unbeatable”. Mr HS Gohalwaria added that the incidence of cancer is increasing at an alarming rate and the action that we take today can make all the difference in future.

Cancer Survivorship was highlighted by Mrs Veena Mittal who fought a victorious battle with the disease almost 20 yrs back. She said “cancer is such a disease about which we think that it cannot touch me. While having this attitude we forget that the disease is not going to seek permission before coming. It will just come. Support from family and community is vital for victory.” Mr Sikander Lal Jain also praised the efforts of the society and CMC. Dr N K Chaudhary, Head of Surgery department at CMC Ludhiana also emphasized on the fact that knowledge is empowerment and so is early detection. Dr M Joseph John from CMCH emphasized about a united effort for success in fight against cancer.

Mr Varun, a member of CAN FIGHT CANCER, has seen his mother battling the disease very closely to emerge victorous. He says, ‘To say that cancer is challenging is just an understatement. The challenges are manifold – physical, emotional, social and financial. Fighting the disease is only one part of the battle. More resources, research, and increased public awareness are needed to improve the quality of life of cancer survivors”. Transport back to the starting point and Ambulance facilities were made available by CMC Ludhiana.

Finally the walkathon was put to a close with a declaration by the society President Dr. R.P.Jain with a vote of thanks and to have such events frequently not only in the city but also to spread the geographical coverage and expand the work of the society beyond the local limits of Ludhiana into all the nooks and corners of the country and even globally over time. The society motivated and united by a common feeling that “knowing it exists is not enough, get informed and pass it on”aims at collaborating with volunteers in different regions as well as through the use of the online platform (www.canfightcancer.com) in order to utilize the immense power inherent in cyberspace for this noble cause.
