Light to moderate rain/thundershowers likely at isolated places during next 24 hrs and weather is likely to be dry thereafter. During this period, maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to remain between 34-35oC and 23-25oC, respectively. The maximum relative humidity is expected to remain between 64-74% and minimum between 33-48% during these days.


                   It is optimum time to plant autumn season sugarcane (20th September to 20th October). Fodder crops barseem, shaftel should be sown from last week of September to first week of October. 



                  Plant hoppers during these days pose a serious threat in paddy. The crop dries up in patches. The plant hoppers can be controlled by spraying Confidor/Crocodile 17.8 SL @ 40 ml or Ekalux/Quinalmass 25 EC @ 800 ml or Coroban/Dursban 20 EC @ 1 litre in 100 litres of water per acre. For better results, direct the spray towards the base of the plants.



                  If Sheath blight also starts appearing on different rice varieties, spray the crop with Amistar Top 325 SC or Tilt/ Bumper 25 EC (propiconazole) or Folicur/ Orius 25 EC (tebuconazole) or Moncern 250 EC (pencycuron) @ 200 ml or Nativo 75 WG @ 80 g or Lusture 37.5 SE (flusilazole + carbendazim) @ 320 ml or Bavistan 50 WP (carbendazim) @ 200 gm in 200 litres of water per acre. Apply first spray at boot stage of crop and second after 15 days. Prevailing weather and age of the rice crop is favourable for the development of false smut of rice. To check the disease give first spray of Kocide 46 DF @ 500 g/acre at booting stage of the crop and second spray of Tilt 25 EC @ 200 ml in 200 litres of water after 10 days.



                  In basmati, stem borer is a serious problem. When more than 2% dead hearts or white ears appear, spray Fame 480 SC @ 20 ml or Mortar 75 SG @ 170 g or Coragen 20 SC @ 60 ml or Monocil 36 SL @ 560 ml or Coroban/Dursban/Lethal/Chlorguard/Durmet/Classic/Force 20 EC one litre or Fipronil 80 % WG @ 15 g in 100 litres of water per acre. In adition to these, granular insecticides i.e. Ferterra 0.4 GR @ 4 kg/acre or Padan/Caldan/Kritap/Sanvex/Nidan/Marktap/Miftap 4 G @ 10 kg/acre or Regent/Mortel/Mifpro/Mahaveer GR 0.3 G @ 6 kg/acre in standing water can also be applied.



                  To control weeds in pea, spray Stomp 30 EC @ 1 litre/acre or Afalon @500 g/acre as preemergence application using 150-200 litres of water. Avoid early sowing to check wilt/root rot diseases. Pea wilt can be controlled by treating seeds with Bavistin @ 1g or Captan @ 2 g/kg seed. Apply 3 kg Thimet 10 G or 10 kg Furadan 3 G per acre in furrows at sowing for reducing the infestation of stem fly.



                  It is the ideal time for planting of evergreen fruit plants. During this month, for management of fruit drop in kinnow, spray the crop with Ziram 27 SC @ 1250 ml or Propiconazole 25 EC @ 500 ml or Bavistin 50 WP @ 500 gm in 500 litres of water per acre. The weed infestation is major problem during rainy season. To control weeds apply post emergence application of Glycel 41 SL or Gramaxone 24 WSC @ 1.6 liters per acre in 200 liters of water during this season. Avoid drift of weedicide on fruit plant parts.

Health and production of poultry

Summer is a challenging season to poultry farming. For the hot summer months there are many precautions which need to be taken right from the onset of rising temperature. The information was shared by Dr. Samita saini of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University. She said that Poultry birds do not have sweat glands and have thick cover of feathers. During summer months the birds consume less feed and more water due to which their growth rate, egg production, egg shell quality and hatchability are all adversely affected and mortality is high. Disease incidence in the flocks also increases because of wet litter, immuno-suppression, vaccination failures and contamination of drinking water. 
Dr. Saini said that there should be a grass cover on the grounds surrounding the poultry house which will reduce the reflection of sunlight into the house. Vegetation should be kept trimmed to avoid blocking air movement and to help reduce rodent problems. Shady trees should be located where they do not restrict air movement. Keep a reliable, clean, cool source of water available to help the birds cope with high temperatures. As the birds excrete electrolytes during periods of heat stress, electrolytes can be added to the drinking water to replace those that are lost and to stimulate water consumption. The number of waterers and frequency of watering should be increased in summer months.
While purchasing new stock the time of purchase should be adjusted in such a way that the productive stage should not come during acute summer months. Before the onset of summer season the unproductive and weak birds should be removed and stocking density should be reduced. During summer season nutrient intake by the birds should be increased by increasing nutrient density, feeding birds during colder part of the day and adjust ventilation fans to provide more cooling during the evening. Feed withdrawal from 9am to 4.30 pm is very effective in reducing heat stress mortality. Feed intake and digestion produce nearly 7% additional heat in the body which is maximum 4 to 5 hours after feed intake. This should not coincide with hottest part of the day (2 to 3 pm) Birds fasted in the day compensate intake in the night time. Crude Protein level in feed should not be increased and protein from only vegetable source should be used. 
Preventive treatment through drinking water should be given. In moderate hot weather, Ascorbic acid, Acetylsalicylic acid, Sodium bi carbonate and Potassium chloride can be given in drinking water to maintain electrolyte balance. In heat stress, Vit. C and Electrolytes may be used.  Egg collection frequency at the farm should be increased and cold room should be available for egg storage in hot summer months.

Poultry Training concludes at GADVASU

The Department of Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Extension Education, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana organized two weeks poultry training. Forty two participants from various districts of Punjab State participated in the training programme. Participants were peculiar collection of poultry businessmen, representatives, graduates and unemployed youths. The complete capsule training programme on poultry was provided to the trainees on all aspects starting from selection of land, housing design, poultry management, feeding management of poultry birds, control of various diseases and  vaccination schedule, handling of eggs, marketing of poultry birds including preparation of project report and loan facilities etc.  Such large no. of trainees registered for the course depict that more  and more farmers are going to adopt diversification, with poultry farming.

A field visit to a progressive poultry farm was also organized to aware the poultry trainees about the practical aspects on poultry farming. After undertaking this training programme, one can start his own venture. All participants appreciated Guru Angad Dev Vety & Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, Director of Extension Education, as well as Head of department and course coordinators for organizing this training programme.  Dr. RS Sahota, Director of Extension Education was the chief guest at the concluding function and he said that poultry farming is an excellent field for employment as well as to meet the protein needs of the people. He also said that like other functional farmers’ associations, poultry farmers can form an association with the help of University, which can be useful for the growth of poultry farming in the state. Dr. JS Bhatti, Head, Vety Extension informed the trainees that department has various publications in local language and providing training on Dairy, Pig, Goat, value addition of the livestock produce. He also emphasized that it is the need of time to adopt the poultry farming in scientific way to earn more from this business.  Whereas Dr. Parminder Singh and Dr. Udeybir Singh coordinated this Programme Dr. SK Kansal coordinated all the technical inputs.
