Advanced Gastroenterology Institute (AGI)-The GASTROCITI, Ludhiana conducted a one-day live workshop on Advanced GI endoscopy and Technician Training program.

This workshop was attended by eminent practising Gastroenterologists from all across Punjab, Himachal  Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

The event AGI-LIVE 2021 included live demonstration of advanced GI endoscopy procedures and video talks cum panel discussions on techniques and controversies in basic and advanced new procedures. Live sessions included cases of POEM for Achalasia Cardia, Spyglass cholangioscopy for large complex CBD stone, EUS-guided drainage of pseudocyst using new innovation of Lumen apposing metal stent (HOT AXIOS), EUS guided variceal coil embolization for large bleeding gastric varices and EUS guided tissue acquisition from lymph nodes and pancreas. The highlight of the event was performance of a new technique for the first time in Punjab called Endobiliary RFA  (RADIOFREQUENCY ABLATION) for a bile duct tumor. In short, this unique workshop ensured comprehensive illustration of advanced and novel endoscopic techniques to  the GI fraternity across the region and was widely appreciated by all.

CMC organizes three days Hemophilia workshop

The department of Clinical Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation in association with Hematopathology held a state level workshop "AHEAD”–Advancing Haemophilia Education Awareness & Diagnosis at Christian Medical College, Ludhiana. It is a three day workshop, starting on May 15, 2018. Hemophilia is a common bleeding disorder, but facilities for adequate diagnosis and treatment are lacking in the community.

AHEAD is a state level training program for doctors in all the medical colleges and civil hospitals in Punjab, with the patronage of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, National Health Mission. The theme for this year's program, adapted from the World Federation of Hemophilia is "Sharing knowledge makes us stronger". The training course consists of three arms, consisting of Doctors, technicians and physiotherapists.

The highlight of the program includes lectures by experts in the field from CMC Ludhiana. Dr. M Joseph John, Dr. Chepsy Philip and Dr. Suvir Singh from the department of Clinical Hematology spoke on clinical management and manifestations of Hemophilia. Dr Naveen Kakkar and DrVandana from Hemato-Pathology spoke about various lab aspects, and are planning hands on training sessions for lab technicians, to make them adept at laboratory techniques required to diagnose and monitor patients with Hemophilia. DrMullai and her team from the department of physiotherapy also spoke on muskuloskeletal manifestations of Hemophilia and measures to treat them. External faculty for the program also consists of eminent experts from PGI Chandigarh, including Dr Pankaj Malhotra, Professor and Head of Clinical Hematology, and Dr Deepak Bansal, Professor of Pediatrics, and Dr Anita Tahlan from GMCH, sec 32. They will be speaking on various aspects of diagnosis and management of patients with Hemophilia. Dr. William Bhatti, Director CMC hospital, Ludhiana was also among the dignitaries present and he congratulated everyone for the efforts made to conduct this three day workshop. 

The program was graced by Dr. Parminder Pal Singh Sidhu, Civil Surgeon Ludhiana, who was the chief guest for the occasion. DrManpreetChhatwal, Additional Project Director and DrSukhwinder Singh, Joint Director Blood Transfusion Services Cum SNO, State blood cell, graciously accepted to be guests of honor. This program was done as prelude to National Health mission (NHM) providing free anti Hameophillia factors to all theGovernment medical colleges and CMC Ludhiana for the patients of Punjab. It is hoped that such workshops would help to increase awareness about Hemophilia in the community and improve facilities for diagnosis and treatment at the state level. This would help towards the long term goal of making Punjab a Hemophilia free state, and provide free or subsidized treatment for patients.

Workshop on 'Enhancement of Evaluation Skills'

A one day workshop on 'Enhancement of Evaluation Skills' was organized by DAV Public School, BRS Nagar, Ludhiana under the aegis of DAV Centre of Academic Excellence for the teachers of Class VIII. Mr. Yogesh Gambhir, Principal, DRV DAV Centenary Public School, Phillaur was the resource person. 60 teachers from various DAV Institutions falling under Ludhiana zone attended the same.

The workshop which aimed at bringing in objectivity in evaluation of papers, began with decoding of the term success by all the participants as per their ideology and then co-relating it with the student's perception. The Resource Person at the onset encouraged all the participants to love their respective subjects to instill love for knowledge in their students. He added that success is a journey from 'Can I' to ' I did'  and this couid be used to motivate the students to aim for the best in everything.

Generally there is lot of subjectivity in evaluation that can ruin a child's future. In a bid to check the same he started with evaluation of sheets to communicate valuable tips to bring in parity in evaluation at all stages. He also stressed on detailed discussion by evaluators on value points to safeguard the interest of the students. The participants felt enriched with the tips given by  Mr. Gambhir.

Principal, Mrs. J.K. Sidhu in her address hoped for student friendly marking in all examinations. She thanked Mr. Yogesh Gambhir for his initiative and the efforts put in by him to make the workshop interactive and effective to eliminate some of the vices plaguing the examination system of the country.

PNRC workshop on revised GNM syllabus-2015

A two day Punjab Nurses Registration Council (PNRC) Orientation Workshop on Revised GNM Syllabus – 2015 (as per INC) conducted by College of Nursing, Christian Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana from 19th -20th August. Mrs. Surjeet Kaur, Registrar, PNRC and Chief Guest of the day graced the Inaugural session. She took a session on “Milestones in Nursing Education”. Delegates were the Principals of various Colleges and Schools of Nursing from Moga, Raikot and Ludhiana. Prof.(Mrs.) Ponnamma R. Singh, Principal, College of Nursing, CMC highlighted on “Indian Nursing Council Regulations”. 

The workshop proved to be quite informative and updated the changes in the Revised GNM Syllabus.

Two days Rabi Workshop Concludes at PAU

Deliberations on package of practices for wheat, barley, pulses, oilseeds, maize, forage and millets were held during the two-day “Research and Extension Specialists’ Workshop for Rabi Crops,” which concluded at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today. The workshop was attended by Agriculture Development Officers, Agriculture Officers and Chief Agriculture Officers from the Department of Agriculture, Punjab; Deputy/Associate Directors (Training) from Krishi Vigyan Kendras; District Extension Specialists; and deans, directors and subject matter specialists of the University. The experts held also discussions on agricultural engineering, agro-forestry and economics of rabi crops.

            In his inaugural address, the Chief Guest, Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice-Chancellor, PAU, lauded the support of Punjab Government and State Agriculture Department in checking whitefly incidence on cotton. “The joint efforts have resulted in curbing whitefly menace,” he said, while assuring PAU’s full cooperation in solving agriculture issues in future also. Dr Dhillon said collaborative efforts were also required to control yellow rust disease of wheat. He emphasized on making judicious use of agro-chemicals, adopting cooperative farming, reducing cost of production, keeping farm records, using bio-fertilizers, and re-scheduling the sowing time of various crops in view of rising temperature.

            The Guest of Honour, Dr J.S. Bains, Director of Agriculture, Punjab, said that State with 1.5 per cent of geographical area of the country is making maximum contribution to the centre’s food kitty. He exhorted the participants to keep interacting with the scientists in order to give right direction to the agricultural research. He also stressed on contributing biotechnology and nano-technology to the futuristic agriculture.

            Dr R.K. Gumber, Director of Research, PAU highlighted the characteristics of the newly developed crop varieties and shed light on production-protection technologies for various crops.

            Chairing the concluding session today, Dr R.S. Sidhu, Director of Extension Education, underlined the need for strengthening farmer-research-extension-marketing linkages. He said that this workshop would play an important role in transferring new farm innovations to the fields through extension functionaries. “We have won the faith of farmers in controlling whitefly, yellow rust and mealy bug. Similarly, we will have to continue with the collaborative efforts to sustain this faith in future as well,” he added.

            Earlier, Dr H.S. Dhaliwal, Dean, College of Agriculture, welcomed the dignitaries, officers and PAU scientists.  Dr T.S. Riar, Professor of Extension Education conducted the proceedings of the workshop. The participants also visited the experimental areas of Agronomy, Plant Breeding and Genetics, Plant Pathology, Entomology, Soil Science, Farm Machinery and Power Engineering, Soil and Water Engineering, etc.

Two-days Rabi workshop has been organized by Directorate of Extension Education in Pal Auditorium at PAU, Ludhiana.  On this occasion, PAU Vice Chancellor, Dr. B. S. Dhillon was the Chief Guest and Dr. J. S. Bains, Director of Agriculture, Punjab was the Guest of Honour. The Agricultural Development Officers, Agriculture Officers, Chief Agriculture Officers from all over the state, scientists from different KVKs, University scientists from different disciplines and extension specialists have participated in the workshop. 

Dr. Dhillon emphasized on judicial use of chemicals in agriculture and we have to step towards the less use of insecticides.  While discussing about the bio-fertilizers, he urged upon the conservation of nitrogen and phosphorous nutrient in the soil.  He appreciated the joint efforts of extension specialists and University scientists to control the incidence of white fly.  Similarly, he emphasized on joint efforts to control yellow rust in wheat.   While talking about cooperative farming, Dr. Dhillon said that we should adopt agricultural machinery through cooperative societies by which we can reduce the initial cost on agriculture.  On this occasion, Dr. Dhillon also appreciated the cooperation rendered from Punjab Govt. and agriculture department and gave assurance from University for any agricultural crisis in future.  Dr. Dhillon, further stated that agricultural accounting is must.  So, there is dire need to aware the farmers regarding this.  In view of increasing temperature, there is need to re-schedule the sowing time of crops.    

           Speaking on this occasion, Dr. Bains focused on the future targets of different crops.  He stated that Punjab occupies 1.5 percent area of the country and contributing a lot in central pool.  He stated that in collaboration with PAU we have achieved the new heights in agriculture which are appreciable.  He encouraged the officers, scientists and extension specialists to participate in open discussion so that the right direction can be given to agricultural research.  He said that new research experiments should be planned in view of climate change and farm operations should be planned according to weather forecast.  He emphasized on great contribution of bio-technology and nano-technology practices in future. 

           Dr. R. K. Gumber, Director of Research, PAU highlighted the new recommendations of the University.  He also informed about the research works going on in the University. 

           Dr. H. S. Dhaliwal, Dean, College of Agriculture welcomed the delegates.  On this occasion, the exhibition was displayed by different departments of the University to show the new technologies and techniques. 

           The organizer of this workshop, Dr. R. S. Sidhu, Director of Extension Education while giving thanks to the participants, he discussed about the challenges in extension works in Punjab agriculture.  He stated that while controlling the incidence of white fly, yellow rust and mealy bug we have earned the faith of Punjab farmers and we have to work hard to maintain this faith.  We have to reach the door of every small farmer to guide them

PAU to hold workshop on Rabbi Crops on August 16-17

The Directorate of Extension Education of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) will be organizing a two-day “Research and Extension Specialists’ Workshop for Rabi Crops” on August 16 and 17. Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice-Chancellor, PAU will inaugurate the workshop on August 16. Dr J.S. Bains, Director of Agriculture, Punjab will speak on “Rabi crops production, targets and problems in Punjab.” The officials from the State Department of Agriculture; Directors of PAU Regional Stations; District Extension Specialists (Senior Most); Deputy/Associate Directors (Training) from Krishi Vigyan Kendras; and University experts would participate in the workshop. The experts would deliberate on cultivation of wheat, barley, pulses, oilseeds, maize, forage and millets in addition to agricultural engineering,agro-forestry and economics of rabi crops. An exhibition, showcasing various crop varieties alongwith their production-protection technologies, would also be put up by various departments of the University.

Right guidance: make the sailing smooth

Adolescence is the most tumultuous period of one’s life and a hand holding and right guidance make the sailing smooth. Keeping the need of the students in mind DAV Public School organised a talk by eminent doctor, Dr. Dwarka Pershad a clinical psychologist and Retired Additional Professor of Clinical Psychology at PGI, Chandigarh. He was accompanied by Dr. Tarlochan Singh from Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, Ludhiana. Dr. Tarlochan Singh from GTB Hospital Ludhiana. Dr. Dwarka Pershad is having more than 50 years of experience to his credit and has worked in different capacities in PGI and several other reputed organizations and has won several awards and honours. He has authored a book titled ‘Construction of Memory’ and has even translated the psychology tests in vernacular to suit the masses.

Dr. Dwarka Pershad, talked about the common attitude of the people towards the psychological problems which further aggravates the situation to take it beyond correction. He said that all problems of youngsters emanate from self, parent or school. Therefore a strong liaison between home and school can help them face the challenges and develop sound personalities. He addressed the problems of the students pertaining to their age and suggested ways and measures to tackle the same. He stressed on the importance of spirituality and self determination which can help in correcting off the track behavior of the youngsters due to various distractions. Dr. Pershad also advised the students to accept constituent problems and put in their best to excel despite these. He exhorted the students to be wary of adopting shortcuts to achieve success in life. In fact having proper study habits and adhering to the time table can be the sure shot formulae to success.

Principal Mrs. J.K.Sidhu, thanked Dr. Dwarka Pershad for sparing his valuable time to render help to the adolescents on the campus in analyzing their behaviour for the betterment of the self, family and the society.
