Advanced Eye Centre PGIMER Chandigarh remained active and alert during this Diwali also. PGI staff saved many injured persons by providing the quick medical help and required services. In view of the Diwali Festival and anticipation of many emergencies due to cracker injuries, the Advanced Eye Centre, PGIMER has made an elaborate arrangement to meet and provide immediate treatment to the patients reporting to the PGIMER. 13th November 2023 at 18:07

The department has doctors and staffs on special emergency duty round the clock at the Advance Eye Centre PGIMER, Chandigarh from the morning of 11-11-2023 to 14-11-2023 (8 am) to attend the patients on arrival. 

A total of 23 patients came to the Advanced Eye Centre on 11-11-2023  (8 AM) to 13-11-2023 (8 AM) with alleged history of fire crackers injuries in 48 hours. There were 18 males and 5 females, of theses 10 were age 14 years and the youngest being 6 years old. There were 14 patients from Tricity (Chandigarh-10 Mohali 1 and PKL- 2) and rest from the neighboring states of Punjab (3), Haryana (6), Himachal Pradesh (2). Thirteen patients were bystanders and rest 10 were bursting crackers themselves. 

Out of 23 patients 7 eyes have open globe injuries and needed emergency surgeries. 16 had closed globe injuries and 13 of these have serious injuries.  Rest 3 out of 23 have either minor injuries or skin injuries and were managed conservatively. We have comparative data of previous 3 years and we feel it was comparatively lesser cases in this Diwali 2023.

A call by IMA Ldh and Punarjot Eye Bank society

Let's celebrate safe and pollution free Diwali

IMA Ludhiana in association with Punarjot Eye Bank Society (Regd) organised a special seminar cum press conference on 27th November (Thursday), 4:00 pm at IMA House, B.R.S Nagar, Ludhiana.
Dr. PS Jassal Honorary Secretary IMA Ludhiana informed the audience that as they are feeling proud that we are going for smart city title for our Ludhiana. Let us contribute our role in health education and in prevention of ill effects of noise, air and physical injuries during Diwali.
Dr. Sanjeev Uppal Mch, HOD Plastic surgery DMC&H gave away the tips to have safe diwali. He said that children should be supervised by adults while bursting crackers and a bucket full of water should be kept nearby. He further told that crackers should be bursted in open space like play grounds, fields or roof top and recommended use of sparkle (fuljhari) to ignite crackers specially anaars, rockets, bobms and chakaries. This will avoid the risk of injuries to hands and face, he added.
Dr. Dinesh Goyal DM chest specialist suggested that all the asthmatic patients should take their preventive medication regularly and rescue medicine on need basis. Avoid inhalation of smoke as much as possible. Limiting use of crackers on diwali is one of the best way to decrease the human suffering particularly asthmatics patients.
Dr. Ramesh Medical Eye specialist told that in case of eye injuries due to firecracker first we should seek medical advice. We should not rub the eyes, rinse the eyes, apply the pressure and remove any object that stuck in eyes. Do not apply eye ointment or take the blood thinning and pain medication such as aspirin or ibuprofen.
Dr. Kulwant Singh President IMA Ludhiana appealed to all IMA doctors to participate with their expertise and experience in health education to prevent medical injuries to citizens of Ludhiana. IMA Ludhiana always worked for welfare of society and wishes all citizens of smart city Ludhiana very happy and safe Diwali.

A Call for the Green Diwali

Ludhiana: 28 October 2013: (Rector Kathuria//Punjab Screen):In a function to create awareness about the  Dengue fever and promotion of healthy environment organized by the Nav Chetna Bal Bhalai Committee at  Channan Devi Memorial Govt. High School, Salem Tabri,  Dr Arun Mitra, ENT Surgeon and General Secretary of the Bharat Jan Gyan Vigyan Jatha (BJGVJ) informed the students about means to prevent themselves from Dengue fever. He asked them to wear full sleeve shirts and socks so as to prevent from mosquito bite. He also asked them to identify any source of mosquito breeding in their house or locality, use the mosquito repellents and mosquitocidal sprays and also mosquito nets. The event was organized under the instructions of Deputy Commissioner and guidance of the Civil Surgeon Ludhiana under the leadership of S. Sukhbir Singh Sekhon, President of the committee.
 Further he called upon the students to celebrate Diwali 2013 as Green Diwali. The crackers emit hazardous smoke which is detrimental to our health. More over there is already dense smoke around due to burning of paddy straw. Cracker’s smoke will add to the smoke density. Those suffering from chest diseases especially Asthma are at grave risk in such conditions. Nasal allergies increase causing stuffiness of the nose and other respiratory problems. He reminded of high density smoke throughout the state on 12th October 1998 which caused serious health problems. Similarly London smog in 1950 killed 3500 people. Sound of cracker blast is some times as high as 120 Decibel which can cause even total deafness, elderly and the children are more vulnerable, he added.
Shri Sukhbir Singh President and Shri Jagjit Singh Maan  General Secretary of the committee said that their purpose is to spread awareness about different health problems and means to prevent them. We also create awareness against the child labour and protection of children’s rights.
