Ludhiana, May 22, 2013(Rector Kathuria): A 22 member delegation of Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD) is going to Germany to participate in the international congress on Social and Health Effects of Small Arms. This is first such congress being organized by the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) at Villengen Schwenningen, the cities located near the major gun producing industry Heckler and Kohl from 30th May to 2nd June 2013. The congress will focus on “Small Arms – weapons of mass destruction, how their production, trade and use affects health and development, Economic roots and impact of global arms trade, Conversion, political framework and alternative security concepts and Solutions and Actions: Perspectives and activities international, regional, national”.
The Indian delegation includes doctors and medical students from Punjab – 7 and rest from other parts of the country. From Indian delegation Dr.Arun Mitra will make a presentation at the plenary session on the subject “Arms Race And Socio Economic Development South Asian Perspective”. Dr S S Soodan along with Dr Tipu Sultan of Pakistan will conduct a workshop on “Small arms production, trade and use affect health and development – Solutions and Actions”. Dr N S Bawa will put up an exhibition on the deadly effects of small arms. Four medical students from IDPD will undertake a Bike tour in Germany from Ulm to Villingen.
Number of Arms in India 40,000,000 and Pakistan 18,000,000 pose a serious threat to their population. Continued violence in the different parts of India has cost immense loss of life. More than 21000 people died in the terrorist related violence in  Punjab 1981 to 1995. Similarly more than 43000 people have died in the state of Jammu & Kashmir in the last 21 years. In the North Eastern part of India due to internal conflicts substantial number of people have died in the past. Everyday violence in Pakistan has led to 47000 people dead in the last 10 years. The civil war in Sri Lanka for quarter of a century, claimed around 130,000 lives. The UN estimates that 40,000 civilians alone died in the five months before the war's end in May 2009. Nepal reports a violent death rate of 6.2 per 100,000 in an average year between  2004 and 2009.
Therefore it is important that the production of small arms and their trade should be highly regulated and gradually phased out. IDPD has already demanded that no arms licenses should be issued to the civilians as these are mostly used for bullying purpose. We will further demand:
Permanent members of the UN security council are the chief producers and suppliers of small arms. There should be political and moral will to curtail their weapon industries.
All weapons should have international registry code to trace their origin.
Funds should be created to purchase and destroy illegal small arms.
Illegal trade and support to terror groups should be regulated in terms of small arms supplied.
Chief arms suppliers should consider human rights violations.
The recently signed arms trade treaty (ATT) should be amended accordingly.
IDPD has also planned an international students exchange programme at government medical college Amritsar, Faridkot and Bathinda.

Shopkeepers on road

Ludhiana observed a bandh at Ferozepur Road

Ludhiana: May14, 2013: (Rector Kathuria): More than 500 small shopkeepers on Ferozpur Road Ludhiana observed a bandh.On the call given by joint Action committee of “Aarti Chowk Shopkeepers Association”, “Bharat Nagar Chowk area Shopkeeper Association” and  Agar Nagar Shop Keepers Association. The Shopkeepers were protesting against the atrocires action of MCL and Police against them in name of implementations of directions of High Court.

                       The Leaders of the Action Committee Mr. Pawan Kumar Puri, Charanjit grewal and Ramesh Rattan explained to the media that Ferozpur Road is the only road where some parking was developed by the MCL some year back. Mr. Deepak Badyal showed the document where the MCL has issued the tenders to develop these parking’s in 2007, and they have spent crores of rupees from public funds to develop these parking. But, now all of a sudden the local authorities has not only changed their version regarding   these space but also began to torture shopkeepers by absolutely prohibiting them and their employee from parking their cycle or scooter in marked public parking’s in  front of these shops. It is to be particularly mentioned that these parking are neither made on part of Main Road nor on service lanes and are not causing any hindrance to the smooth flow of traffic. They further told that some police personal are permanently deputed on the road by the police and they are not permitting any vehicle of customer to approach these shops to give order or making purchases.

      The police personal standing  here mishandle with the visiting customers and their employees. Some time they puncture  their vehicle and deflate their tiers. These activities are causing anguishes and harassment to their customers.

    Mr. Pawan puri told that now no customer comes to these shops and if some activities are happening here it is only to deliver order booked on the phone or sometime customer from remote areas  unaware of these action may visit them and often become victim of these actions .They are facing losses in their business. The sales of those shops have already come down from 80% to 90% and it become difficult for these small shop keepers to generate sufficient income to met with daily expenses of these shop and for met their daily expenses to run their family affair smoothly. They are passing their time in utter tense situation and it began to effect their peace of mind and their families  also getting effected by these actions. Some  veteran Shopkeeper Mr. Raj Kumar and Mr.Madhok near Aarti Chowk feel that because large number of police personals  are deputed  on these duties so the situation of Law and Order has deteriorated unprecidently.

One more Shopkeeper and leader of the association Mr.Sushil Kumar Aggarwal told that they began to face  problems  as many employees began to left these shops because neither small shopkeepers are able to provide a parking space of their cycle scooter in the shops nor are they able to park these at some other place.

After the Bandh Shopkeepers conducted a rally at Aarti Chowk which was addressed by MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu, Deputy Mayor R.D Sharma,  Councilor MLC Mr.GOGI  and later taken a demonstration to D.C office. They were carry play card with Slogans that “NADARSHAHI FARMAN MURDABAD” etc.   Shopkeepers tried to get explaination from D C  about the real situation and want to know why they are discriminated and victimized by prohibiting  them from parking while an all the other road these parking spaces are provided by the authorities by marking Yellow lines. They also wanted the clarification that parking is not permitted in constructed exclusive parking area.

   They also demanded if there is any proceeding in count which is affecting their interest then if must be made known to them through public information system. The view and fact put before the court must be made known to them and may be consulted with their representative.

They also demanded that free legal aid by way of providing them competent advocate  by the government be given to them.  As all of these Shopkeepers are running  their business in legitimate manner and paying lacs of taxes to Government.

On this occasion some other trade associations also made announcement to support these shopkeepers in their just cause Among  them were MR.D P MAUR, Ashok Jindal, Rajan Shukla, Amarveer Singh.

Swasthya Gym celebrated its 7^th Anniversary today. To commemorate the event a competition was held at the gym.  Free Weight Challenge and Power Bench Press were the main attraction of this competition. Among the male & female gym members media persons also participated in this competition. The best achiever was honored with the best achiever award.  Devoted to peoples MLA Bharatbhushan Ashu has distributed the Prizes to winners.

International Labor Day

May Day Conference to be held in Ldh PUDA grounds

Ludhiana: 30 April 2013: International Labor Day is call to all workers-laboring masses of the world for waging a united struggle against every type of exploitation. On the occasion of 128^th International Labor Day tomorrow (1^st May), May Day Conference is being organized by Karkhana Mazdoor Uinon, Punjab (KMU) and Textile-Hosiery Kamgar Union, Punjab (TKMU) in PUDA grounds Ludhiana. TKMU president Rajwinder said that large no. of people from workers-laboring masses and youth will gather for the conference. He said that May Day Conference is not just a formality for them. Today, laboring people are being exploited and oppressed barbarically. There is no big mass movement against these atrocities. In such times, remembering the revolutionary legacy of May Day and by taking inspiration from it, building the future path for changing the present inhumane conditions is the only right way to commemorate the May Day.

            During the program, comrades in the leadership of the workers’ organizations will speak on the history and relevance of May day in present times, and also on the economic-political-social conditions of country and world today. The speakers will also discuss that in such situation exploited and oppressed can follow which path today when the whole system is rotting from head to foot.

            Comrade Rajwinder also said that organizations affiliated to many parliamentary vote-seeking parties hire the B-grade singers and make the orchestra girls to dance to gather the crowd on the occasion of May Day. The May Day Conference will oppose and expose such practices and will take forward the revolutionary ethos of May Day. There will be a cultural program comprising of revolutionary songs & plays. He said that it is very important to bring forward the alternative to the ugly, vulgar & consumerist culture served to the masses by the capitalist media.

            KMU and TKMU have called upon all the workers-youth who want to bring a change to take part in the conference.

Three days festival at Peerkhana from tomorrow

 All is set for the religious cum Sufi event at the New Aggarwal Peerkhana Ground Kakowal road, Ludhiana. This three days event will start from April 20 and remain continue till April 23, 2013. Ludhiana City Stroke Registry

Ludhiana, 18th April, 2013:(Shalu Arora and Rector Kathuria):The department of neurology at Christian Medical College is conducting a “Population based stroke registry survey” sponsored by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). The epidemiology of stroke is well studied in the developed world. However, stroke in the developing world is less well studied. There is evidence that stroke incidence rates in developing countries have increased by more than 100% during the last four decades. Hence the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) initiated this unique National Task Force Project in Ludhiana since August 2010.

A stroke, also called ‘brain attack’ occurs when the vessels supplying blood to the brain is blocked. This results in the death of the brain cells. Depending on the area of the brain involved and the extent of brain cell death, the specific body functions such as speech, movement or memory may be affected. A stroke may be ischemic or hemorrhagic. Ischemic stroke: This is caused when a clot blocks a blood vessel in the brain shutting off the blood flow. Hemorrhagic stroke: This is caused by the rupture of a blood vessel in the brain.

The findings of the stroke registry has brought Ludhiana in the middle of the stroke storm hitting the world. The annual incidence of stroke in the city during the year 2011-12 is 162.3/100,000 lakh , which is the highest in the country. The number of first ever stroke patients identified till now in Ludhiana are 6840 with residents in the age group 18-45 being 20%. Hypertension was the most common risk factor followed by intake of desi ghee, diabetes and alcohol consumption. This suggests that the city has entered the “health transition” which includes the rapid socioeconomic growth, changes in lifestyle, stress and diet which increases the risk of stroke among the city residents.

All the major city health facilities are contributing in this registry but some patients are likely to have sought treatment outside the city due to any reason. To further improve the quality of data the Department of Neurology, CMC will offer free check-up to stroke patients who had received treatment outside the city of Ludhiana from August 2010 till March 2013. P.A.U. EMPLOYEES SPORTS

Today was fourth day and Tomorrow is the last day

Ludhiana (Gulzar Singh Pandher) P.A.U. Employees Union (Recognized) is holding sports mela since last 10 April 2013 game of Cricket is being played to-day. Matches of Badminton, Table Tennis, Football, Volleyball, Hockey were finalized upto yesterday. These sports are organised under the leaderships of Senior Vice President and Vice President of the Union Sh. Baldev Singh Walia, Lakhminders Singh Sandhu, Gurmail Singh Tung and Manmohan Singh.
Tomorrow i.e. 17 April 2013 shall be the last day of these sports. And tomorrow accept matches of Kabbadi athletics of men and women; races, throws jumps and tug of war shall be performed. Three leg race, lemon spoon race, musical chairs games of women shall be the special attraction.  Tomorrow morning Registrar of P.A.U. Dr. P.K. Khanna and Comptroller P.A.U., Sh. A.C. Rana shall inaugurate the sports  by hosting the flag of sports and shall remain present in the matches of Kabbadi and Athletic Games. 
P.A.U. Employees Union's Ex-General Secretary, Amrit Pal Singh thanks the employees, sports person and officers of the University to spare the time for games. He said games promote work culture. President of the Union S. Paramjit Singh Gill and General Secretary of the union Dr. Gulzar Singh Pandher appealed to the employees to participate in the sports mela. They told that Vice-Chancellor of P.A.U. allowed the staff to participate in the games mela from 10 AM to 12 PM. Organization of the games is being done with sportsman spirit and team spirit. The Executive Members S. Jarnail Singh (Cashier) Parveen Garg, (Joint Cashier) Lal Bahadur Yadav, (Secretary) and Gurpreet Singh Dhillon, Kuldeep Singh, Jai Pal, Harmander Singh, Hardev Ghaloti, Mohan Lal, Jaswinder Singh Gholia, Narinder Singh Sekhon are working with full coordination for the performance of the games.
