Fired PU Workers on Protest from past 50 Days, Demands End of Contract System
Chandigarh: 20th June, 2023 : (Kartika Singh/Punjab Screen Desk):: Today a large number of students came to support protesting fired PU workers. The protest has been going on for the last 50 days. All speakers unanimously opposed the exploitative contract system and demanded regular and permanent recruitment by PU authorities.
Students raised slogans against the pro-contractors and anti-workers PU authorities.
Gagandeep, SFS General Secretary coordinated the protest and address the gathered students, research scholars and workers.He said that PU authorities has been following the neoliberal policies of privatization and contractualization. It has destroyed the whole essence of Public University be it the issue of workers, students and teachers. Therefore, we must resist all kinds of contractualization and privatization from all fronts. It is our duty as students to stand with PU Workers and oppose Contract System.
Students Organizations raised the following Demands:
Rejoin all fired PU workers
End Contract system
Regularize all PU Workers
Student organizations also extended solidarity with PU Workers and demanded that all fired PU workers be rejoined immediately.
SFS President, Sandeep said that PU authorities has become inhumane and not ready to end the exploitative contract system. It has caused intolerable financial losses apart from mental trauma.
Moreover, It is not only the issue of 32 PU workers, it is about the livelihood of 32 families. But PU authorities is totally indifferent to the demands of our PU workers and aggressively contractualization. Therefore, we have to fight against contractualization. We need to mobilize wider sections of our society to oppose privatization.
Students unanimously pledged that we will mobilize students in solidarity with our PU workers. They warned PU authorities to rejoin fired PU workers immediately otherwise students will intensify the PU workers' protest.
Speakers from workers, research scholars ASA, PSU (L) also addressed the gathering.
