Father of Rice Revolution Addresses media at PAU

Ludhiana: Monday: 30th January 2017: (Punjab Screen Bureau):
The Father of Rice Revolution and an alumnus of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Dr Gurdev Singh Khush voiced concern over global warming and changing weather pattern while addressing the media at PAU today. He stressed on combating the climate change issues, reducing area under rice, cultivating crops requiring less water and promoting crop diversification technology in Punjab. Replying to the query of zinc and iron in rice, he suggested the application of biotechnological tools in this direction.
Dr Khush, who has come from USA, is on a visit to PAU to attend the annual function of ‘Dr Gurdev Singh Khush Foundation for Advancement of Agricultural Sciences’ in the University on January 31. During the press conference, Dr G.S. Kalkat, Chairman, Punjab State Farmers’ Commission; Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice Chancellor, PAU; and Dr B.S. Dr D.S. Brar, Secretary of the Foundation, while giving a brief introduction of Dr Khush, said, “Dr Khush is a main architect of Green Revolution in rice.  Nearly 35 rice varieties developed by him are being cultivated across the world.” Dr Brar further said, “Dr Khush is a well-known rice breeder and a brilliant scientist, who has trained numerous scientists from diverse countries. A recipient of Japan Prize (1987) and World Food Prize (1996), he has been honoured with doctorate degree by several national and international varsities.”
Highlighting the activities of Khush Foundation, Dr Brar said that it was established in 2010 with generous donation of Rs 3.5. crore from Dr Khush with a mandate to promote agricultural research and development programmes of PAU. The Foundation has four major objectives including award of scholarships to undergraduate students of PAU and GADVASU, award of travel grants to postgraduate students and young faculty of PAU, team award for excellence in transfer of technology to farmers and holding of a guest lecture by a renowned agricultural scientist. Till date, many students, teachers, Krishi Vigyan Kendras and Farm Advisory Service Centres in Punjab have been awarded by Khush Foundation, he told. Dr Brar disclosed, “The Foundation is all set to start financial support for needy students also who are deserving candidates.

           Dr Dhillon, PAU VC, said the three PAU developed rice varieties PR 121, PR 124 and PR 126 have been well-accepted by the farmers of the state. “Last year, about 50 per cent of rice area of the state was under PR 121 variety, which showed excellent results at farmers’ fields,” he told. The University is focusing on conservation of natural resources, he said, while adding that the untiring efforts of scientists have also resulted in the reduced pesticide consumption in the state.  For more pics please click here

PAU Celebrated Republic Day

In spite of rainy weather the 68th Republic Day of the country was  at Punjab Agricultural University, today with great enthusiasm. The Vice Chancellor, Dr.Baldev Singh Dhillon unfurled the tricolor and took salute from the NCC cadets. The function saw the presence of Deans, Directors, faculty, staff and students.

In his address to the audience, Dr Dhillon paid tributes to the freedom fighters while highlighting the pivotal role played by Punjabis to attain independence. The day holds greater significance as on this day in 1929, a pledge for “Poorna Swaraj” was taken in Lahore”, he said.

While congratulating the faculty and students for their efforts in bringing glory to PAU, the Vice Chancellor gave credit to the Department of Farm Machinery and Power Engineering for their contribution towards controlling the white fly attack. He also mentioned the highly successful PAU paddy variety, PR121 that produced a record yield last year in comparison to the PUSA 44 variety. “We are looking forward to the introduction of the Super Straw Management (SMS) system to prevent burning of paddy stubble by farmers”, revealed Dr Dhillon and further briefed about PAU’s achievements in the field of Horticulture, Biofertilizer production, and pesticide and fertilizer reduction. The Vice Chancellor while applauding the winners of various national awards, said that it was great honour for PAU as 3 students from the university were selected for the Prime Minister’s Fellowship, 2 PhD students won the Jawahar Lal Nehru Award and 8 Borlaug fellowships were awarded to PAU.

Dr Dhillon urged the audience to strive towards an efficient work culture and focus on the areas of agro processing and marketing so as to effectively bridge gap between demand and supply. “Discipline and hard work are the keys to develop a healthy society and thus to progress,” he remarked.

Earlier, Dr.Ravinder Kaur Dhaliwal, Director Students Welfare welcomed the Chief Guest, and motivated the students to pay attention to character building and help in eradicating social evils. Sweets were distributed to mark the celebration.

Member Parliament of Calgary Constituency of Canada Darshan Singh Kang today expressed serious concern over the alarming social issues of the India especially Punjab, which are eating into the vitals of society and rendering a setback to its all round development. Kang was in the city to address a gathering organised by Sai Mian Meer Foundation. Mr Kang asked the people of Punjab to raise the alarming issues like drugs, female foeticide and pollution with those
whom they have voted to power and hence owe responsibility towards them.  While sharing the task performed by the political parties of Canada, Kang tried to bring home the point that the contestants for Punjab Vidhan Sabha, should assume cudgels and pledge to cleanse Punjab of
all sorts of social evils which are ruining many a lives and destroying many others in the process. “Land of Baba Nanak who said ‘so keyo manda akhiye, jitt jamme rajaan’  should be purged of all such evils,” Kang asserted. He expressed the need to empower women with education, which, he said, “is the only tool to fight any atrocity that comes her way.” Apart from this, he stressed on judicious use of water as he said, "it is the elixir of life,"

Director, Youth Welfare Department, Panjab University Chandigarh Dr. Nirmal Jaura, introduced the Canadian MP and traced his struggle right from his childhood days in his native village Nathuwala Jadeed in Moga District.
Kang was especially honoured by the Chairman of Sai Mian Meer Foundation Mr Hardial Singh Aman. Kang also inaugurated the new building of the Sigma College of Physiotherapy, where he was welcomed by Dr. Satpal Bhanot, Dr. Chander Bhanot and Dr Nirmal Jaura. Mr. Jasmer Singh Dhatt, Mr. Ravinder Ranguwal and Mr. Jatinder Sharma were also present. A beautiful cultural programme was also performed by students of Sigma College in the honor of Mr Kang.

Lohri was celebrated at Bajaj College with a lot of exuberance and fanfare. The mood on the campus was upbeat and the students were totally absorbed in the festive spirit of Lohri. Students attired infusion of Modern traditional wear teamed with various accessories added glamor and beauty to the festival. 
The program kicked off with "Lohri Poojan." groundnuts and sweets were also distributed among the students. The function was presided by Ms. Balbir bajaj as the guest of honor who graced the occasion with her presence and also blessed all the students The children had a gala time as they danced around the holy bonfire and offered their prayers. kite-flying competition was enjoyed and played with great zeal and fervor .team of vasu katyal , Charanjeet Singh and Kapil Sharma won the competition
Boliyaan and Giddha competition was won by girls of b.sc FD department girls
Aabhas Arora won the Mr Gabru Award and Ms Sonakshi suri won the Ms mutiyaar award.
The students, faculty, staff and all present were completely immersed in festive spirit of Lohri with each and everyone taking part in the celebrations enthusiastically.
Addressing the students on this auspicious occasion Dr.Shikha Dhall, Principal said that Lohri is more than just a festival. The freezing winter chill vanishes in all the merry making around the bonfire of Lohri. She further highlighted the importance of the festival of Lohri, which ushers in the cheerful spring season bidding adieu to the dull winter. She congratulated the team of students and faculty for organizing such a memorable Lohri celebration.

Meeting of Istri Wing Shiromani Akali Dal held under the leadership of Bibi Surinder Kaur Dayal President, at Street No. 5 Shimlapuri, Ludhiana. Meeting was organized to boost up the Election Promotions & spread awareness in the masses about the achievements of Shiromani Akali Dal & Bhartiya Janta Party Alliance Government. Police DAV Public School observes Road Safety Week

The motive was to instill a sense of road safety

IPS Mr. Dhruv Dahiya, ADCP (Traffic) was the Guest of Honour for the day. The Chief Guest, while addressing the students, mentioned that the victims of the road accidents are mainly the youth who drive recklessly and break the traffic rules. He further encouraged the students to drive safely by following the traffic rules with the vision to be safe, responsible, highly aware future drivers. He advised the students to use helmets, seat belts, avoid mobile phones while driving and not to mix drinking with driving and ask the children to carry this message in their minds in the day to come. He shared his valuable information regarding road signs and informatory signs with the students which help them to comprehend the traffic signs displayed on the board. The motive behind this interactive session was to instill a sense of road safety amongst the students and sensitize them about the important issues. He also invited the students to join ‘Helping Hands’ Scheme through which the students will get first hand training of handling the traffic at various strategic points of the city. Dr. Mrs. Anu Verma, Principal of the school, in her addressal speech thanked the dignitary for sharing their estimable experiences with the students and staff. She said that the knowledge and adherence to traffic rules will help the students to be the good drivers on the roads and advised the students to prefer riding bicycles rather than motor vehicles till they attain the age of 18.
