Students learnt current trends in Surgery and Radiology

A 21 days, National level advanced training course on “Current Trends in Veterinary Surgery and Imaging Techniques” under the aegis of Center of Advanced Faculty Training (CAFT), ICAR New Delhi, was organized at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU ), Ludhiana.
25 scientists from 14 states representing 19 universities of India participated in this training course informed Course Director Dr NS Saini. Hands on training to the participants on the latest developments in surgery and diagnostic imaging in veterinary practice, was provided. The more focus was on advances in large and small animal fracture repair by bone plating, intermedullary interlock nailing and C-arm guided techniques for fracture fixation, colic and perineal affections in horses.
Surgical management of eye diseases, diaphragmatic hernia in cows and buffaloes, urinary tract disorders and other soft tissue procedures were demonstrated under inhalant anesthetic procedures. GADVASU faculty and experts from other state universities Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Jammu, Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Chennai, Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar and Pant University delivered expert lectures and conducted practical demonstration during the training programme. Centre of Advanced studies in year 2009 was renamed as the Centre of Advanced Faculty Training (CAFT). Till date the department has conducted 27 training courses on various specialized topics. Over 363 surgeons/clinicians/teachers from various State Agricultural/Veterinary/ ICAR Institutes have been trained.
Registrar Dr.P D Juyal presided over the valedictory function of CAFT training and congratulated participants for successfully completing the training programme. A souvenir and CD of expert lectures and demonstrations was released. It is heartening to note that GADVASU is the only university in the country which has been entrusted by ICAR to train the human resource in the discipline of Surgery and Radiology. Dr H S Sandhu, Dr SPS Sangha and Dr SS Singh released the souvenir and CD of expert lectures and PPT presentations.
Participants also shared their views and appreciated the good quality of training, “State of the Art” laboratories with high level of expertise and better arrangements for stay. They were of view that training will immensely help them to improve diagnosis as well as surgical skills for the treatment of animals. At the end a vote of thanks was proposed.
Dr Saini revealed that Centre of Advanced Studies (CAS), was granted to the Department of Surgery and Radiology GADVASU, Ludhiana in 1994, in the field of Surgery and Radiology by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). In year 2009 it was renamed as The Centre of Advanced Faculty Training (CAFT). This is the only centre, in country, in the field of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology that is providing trainings to the scientist/teacher of other universities/institutions.
