Vet Varsity organizes an Impressive Dog Show

Sunday 18th December 2022 at 4:27 PM

It was a show of faithful Community which Still Exists

Ludhiana: 18th December 2022: (Kartika Singh//Punjab Screen)::

In The Hindu mythology, Kaliyuga is the fourth and darkest stage of the world. In this stage the world is in a state of moral decay.Kali Yuga, in Hinduism, is the fourth and worst of the four yugas (world ages) in a Yuga Cycle, preceded by Dvapara Yuga and followed by the next cycle's Krita (Satya) Yuga. It is believed to be the present age, which is full of conflict and sin. The "Kali" of Kali Yuga means "strife", "discord", "quarrel", or "contention" and Kali Yuga is associated with the demon Kali (not to be confused with the goddess Kali).According to Puranic sources, Krishna's death marked the end of Dvapara Yuga and the start of Kali Yuga, which is dated to 17/18 February 3102 BCE. Lasting for 432,000 years (1,200 divine years), Kali Yuga began 5,123 years ago and has 426,877 years left as of 2022 CE. Kali Yuga will end in the year 428,899 CE.

Even in this KaliYuga, till now such a species is present on this earth which is known for loyalty. Known for her trust. In ancient times they were called dervesh. Great Sufi poets like Bulleh Shah had also praised this race. Get up bullia, friend, don't convince me, don't take tan baazi le gaye dog-taithon ute. Yes, you understood it right, we are talking about dogs only. The word dog is often used by humans to abuse each other, which is a sheer insult to dogs. Today's traitor and selfish person is not capable of being called a dog! Perhaps this is the reason why the custom of adopting, buying and keeping dogs in their homes like their children is increasing rapidly in the general and special public. Whether we ourselves become loyal or not, but we definitely want to keep a living showpiece of loyalty in our homes. Because of this sentiment, a good business of dogs has started happening. Businessmen also live in profit and the government also earns a lot in the name of registration. To further increase this whole trend, a show was also organized by Veterinary University (GADVASU).

Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana organized a "Dog Show". Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor, GADVASU said that the importance of pets is increasing with the rise in nuclear families and this exhibition presented a chance for all stakeholders to discuss various issues related to the welfare of pet animals. The event was also important since this year has been recognized as 'World Veterinary Year'. The Dog Show began with the inaugural session, where Dr. Kamal Kumar Garg, IAS, chief guest inaugurated the show. He spoke about the importance of dogs as pets of choice owing to their co-evolution with society. He expressed his conviction that the dog show would be a valuable platform in promoting canine reproduction, health and societal well-being.

Dr. Satbir Singh Gosal, Vice-Chancellor, Punjab Agricultural University was the Chief Guest during the 'Valedictory Function'. Dr. Gosal said that dogs have proved their vitality and worth over the hundreds of years of their co-existence with human society. He said that the show was a great opportunity for pet owners to interact with veterinarians and industry. He lauded the significant progress made by GADVASU in promoting animal health and welfare in the state. Dr. H S Banga, Registrar of the University said that such events help to demonstrate the strong bond and companionship between humans and pet animals. Dr. Ashwani Kumar, HoD Veterinary Medicine briefed about the dog show. Dr. Parkash Singh Brar, Director of Extension Education presented the vote of thanks. The exhibition of different breeds of dogs would create awareness regarding their importance in different spheres of our lives.

Dr Dhiraj Gupta, Organising Secretary informed that a skill show by the dog squad of the Home Guards was also arranged. Breed competitions were held across eight categories of dogs including Toy, Terrier, Utility, Hound, Gun dog, Working, Pastoral and Miscellaneous groups where more than 125 owners showcased their dogs.

Sh. Ashvinder Singh, Major Amarjit Bath were honored for the service of stray dogs. GADVASU established a dialysis unit in the recent past. The dogs affected with renal problems were treated here and after survival leading a healthy life, also honored. A large number of breeders exhibited different breeds of dogs, cats and birds at the venue. An exhibition of feed and health supplements, grooming kits, bedding and other accessories was also held by the industry. All the officers of GADVASU, Faculty members, employees and a large number of dog lovers graced the occasion.

Protest march in the Support of GADVASU striking students

Many organizations participated
Ludhiana: 23rd July 2014: (Rector Kathuria//Punjab Screen):

Joint Forum of Trade Unions and Social Organisations of Ludhiana held a protest march from Gate No. 5 of the PAU in support of the agitating fishery graduates of GADVASU. They have been agitating since 2nd June 2014 demanding jobs in the department of fisheries govt. of Punjab. Various speakers addressing the gathering said that it is an irony that despite these young graduates agitating for so long for their just demands the govt. has not paid any heed to them. The course of Bachelor of Fishery Sciences was started in 2008 and till now 28 graduates have passed out in three batches but not a single of them has been provided employment by the state government. The future of these graduates is dark and those who take admission to these courses in the time to come will be even more darker. The speakers further said that the department of fishery exists in the Punjab govt. and number of posts there is lying vacant, but still the govt. is not ready to absorb these graduates. Govt. is time and again talking of diversification through dairy,
bee keeping and fisheries and Govt. had raised a loan from the World Bank specifically for the development of fisheries. But when it comes to giving employment to trained graduates the govt. is shirking its responsibility. Various speakers asked how will the govt. develop fisheries without utilizing new technology and utilising the trained human resources ? This shows that the govt. is only showing off its plan of diversification but is not really interested in that. Those who addressed the gathering include Prof. A.K. Maleri from AFDR, D.P. MaurJoint Council of Trade Unions, RamanjeetLaliBSP, Jaswant Zirakh- Inqlabi Kender, Mohinder Singh Dhandari B.S.P., Gurnam Singh Sidhu (AITUC), Kewal Singh Banwait PSEB Employees Federation, Gurmail Singh Medle P.S.S.F., Vijay Narain Moulder and Steel Workers Union, J.S. Ghuman of AAP, Narinder Thakur of ABVP, Parvej of Students and Youth Inqualabi Center, Mamta and Parminder Kaur from  Lakshya (A Woman Organization) also spoke. Apart from this many student organizations of nearby Colleges and Panchs / Sarpanchs of few Villages also participated in to-days Protest March.

Health and production of poultry

Thu, Jun 26, 2014 at 4:13 PM
Improper care may affect adversely in summer-Vet Varsity Expert
Ludhiana: 26-June, 2014: (Rector Kathuria//Punjab Screen Bureau):
Summer is a challenging season to poultry farming. For the hot summer months there are many precautions which need to be taken right from the onset of rising temperature. The information was shared by Dr. Samita saini of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University. She said that Poultry birds do not have sweat glands and have thick cover of feathers. During summer months the birds consume less feed and more water due to which their growth rate, egg production, egg shell quality and hatchability are all adversely affected and mortality is high. Disease incidence in the flocks also increases because of wet litter, immuno-suppression, vaccination failures and contamination of drinking water.
Dr. Saini said that there should be a grass cover on the grounds surrounding the poultry house which will reduce the reflection of sunlight into the house. Vegetation should be kept trimmed to avoid blocking air movement and to help reduce rodent problems. Shady trees should be located where they do not restrict air movement. Keep a reliable, clean, cool source of water available to help the birds cope with high temperatures. As the birds excrete electrolytes during periods of heat stress, electrolytes can be added to the drinking water to replace those that are lost and to stimulate water consumption. The number of waterers and frequency of watering should be increased in summer months.
While purchasing new stock the time of purchase should be adjusted in such a way that the productive stage should not come during acute summer months. Before the onset of summer season the unproductive and weak birds should be removed and stocking density should be reduced. During summer season nutrient intake by the birds should be increased by increasing nutrient density, feeding birds during colder part of the day and adjust ventilation fans to provide more cooling during the evening. Feed withdrawal from 9am to 4.30 pm is very effective in reducing heat stress mortality. Feed intake and digestion produce nearly 7% additional heat in the body which is maximum 4 to 5 hours after feed intake. This should not coincide with hottest part of the day (2 to 3 pm) Birds fasted in the day compensate intake in the night time. Crude Protein level in feed should not be increased and protein from only vegetable source should be used.
Preventive treatment through drinking water should be given. In moderate hot weather, Ascorbic acid, Acetylsalicylic acid, Sodium bi carbonate and Potassium chloride can be given in drinking water to maintain electrolyte balance. In heat stress, Vit. C and Electrolytes may be used.  Egg collection frequency at the farm should be increased and cold room should be available for egg storage in hot summer months.

Dr. Meera D. Ansal on fish farming

Fish need special care during winters-GADVASU Expert

Ludhiana-27-Nov, 2012: Being a cold blooded aquatic animal, fish needs special care during winters. Dr. Meera D. Ansal, Scientist (Fisheries), College of Fisheries, GADVASU said that during winters, temperature of surface water is colder than the bottom layers and the fish prefers to live in the bottom zone. Farmers shall keep the water depth up to 6 feet, so that fish gets enough space for hibernating in the warmer bottom zone. In shallow waters, the whole water column becomes cold, which affects the fish and can prove fatal. Regular addition of tube well water at dusk helps in keeping the surface water warm.
As day length and light intensity also decreases during winters, oxygen levels declines due to poor photosynthetic activity in the pond. The situation further aggravates during continuous cloudy days. The farmers are advised to aerate their ponds either by adding fresh water or by using aerators, especially during early hours of the day. Regular monitoring of water pH is also needed during continuous cloudy days in winters, which may fall to harmful levels due to poor photosynthetic activity and hence higher carbon dioxide levels in the pond. In case there are trees (especially deciduous trees) around the pond, trim them during winters so that direct sunlight could fall over the pond and leaves do not fall in to it, as they will add to the organic load and deteriorate the water quality on decomposition. Shaded ponds are more susceptible to oxygen depletion during winters.
Feed intake of fish decreases with decrease in temperature as its digestive system becomes sluggish. Hence it is essential to reduce the feeding rate by 50-75% depending on the temperature. In case the temperature falls below 50C, it is advised to stop feeding. Excess feed remains unconsumed and accumulates at the pond bottom, which deteriorates the water quality. Farmers are further advised to use low protein diets. It is also recommended to feed your fish with high protein diets just before the onset of winters. It is also necessary to reduce/stop adding organic manures like cow dung, poultry droppings, pig dung etc. in the pond as rate of decomposition of organic manures declines due to poor microbial activity during winters. It is also advised to go for periodic raking of bottom soil (with the help of barbed wire) to prevent any suspected accumulation of toxic gases at the pond bottom.
Presence of algal blooms is another serious problem during winters as they blocks the penetration of sunlight in to the water. Algal blooms appear due to the presence of excess nutrients in the water. Hence it is also recommended to avoid excessive use of inorganic fertilizers during winters. Algal bloom can be controlled by application of either lime @ 50-100 kg/acre or copper sulphate @ 1-2 kg/acre. The farmers are advised to check the pH of water before lime application. In case it is above 8.5, they shall use copper sulphate to control the algal blooms.
During winters, various fungal, bacterial and parasitic diseases like fin rot, gill rot, EUS and argulosis may appear in the fish. Treat the pond with CIFAX @ 400 ml/acre just before the onset of winters. Also treat the pond with potassium permanganate @ 1-2 kg/acre or limestone @ 50-100 kg/acre. Salt application @ 100 kg/acre also helps in protecting fish against disease outbreak during winters.
