Training was conducted for 55 feed millers

In dairy business feed cost alone is around 65% of the total dairy farming expenditure. Dairy farmers make their best efforts to make the balanced feed but availability of feed ingredients, their quality and prices are area of concern. Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University in collaboration with Department of Dairy Development, Punjab regularly conduct trainings for cattle feed millers to update their knowledge and making economical feed for the high yielding animals. One of such training was conducted by Vet Varsity for 55 feed millers coming from different parts of Punjab. According to Dr Parminder Singh, course coordinator, the training schedule included lectures from different aspects of feed manufacturing viz. selection of feed ingredients and their storage, ration formulation for different categories of animals, toxic substances in feed ingredients, processing of feed and feed ingredients, importance of bypass fat and protein, significance of uromol mixture, role of mineral mixture, prevention of metabolic diseases, aflatoxins and their control and cattle feed act. There were healthy discussions among the feed millers to get the better results. It is pertinent to mention that this training is mandatory after three years for all feed manufacturers for renewal of license as per govt. norms. Even this course is compulsory for them who manufactures mineral mixtures for the cattle & buffaloes and who sells & holds feed ingredients for livestock feeding.
Dr HK Verma Director of Extension Education distributed the certificates and advised the feed millers to adopt the recommendations of the experts while formulating the feed. He stressed upon the feed millers as well as farmers to read the dairy related literature. Dr. JS Bhatti, Head, Department of Veterinary Extension proposed the vote of thanks and highlighted the services which GADVASU provide for the dairy farmers and feed millers. He asked the feed millers to take the help of university in organizing awareness camps for the benefits of the farmers.
