The Vice Chancellor laid stress on the contribution of Punjab towards achieving food security in the country. "Even today, whenever the country faces environmental stress like droughts or floods, the contribution of Punjab is highest to the national pool." While lauding the efforts of the Punjab Agricultural University in agricultural empowerment of the state, Dr Dhillon stressed on the need for greater emphasis on farm input as compared to farm income. He further advocated the use of stronger extension methods to convince farmers for adoption of conservation techniques to minimize use of fertilizer, pesticides, water and better stubble management.
"Among the other important contributions of PAU, the increased organic carbon content in soil and decreased pesticide residue in food samples are worth mentioning", said Dr Dhillon while adding that the need of the future is research on better processing and export. He called on the farmers to shift focus from MSP and rather take up subsidiary occupations to give boost to the per capita income of the state. He also highlighted the need for skill development, the infrastructure development for which is near completion in the university. "Another initiative worth lauding is the slogan of Saade Vyaah, Saade Bhog given by the university", emphasized Dr Dhillon and motivated the youth to adopt simplicity in lifestyle while curtailing expenditure on social functions.
The Vice Chancellor called on the post graduate students to give further fillip to the university rankings. "We are ranked number one in publication and citation among state funded universities", said Dr Dhillon while asking the students to read extensively and work hard for better recognition in research. "Finally we all need to reflect on the power and responsibility that comes with democracy and adopt tolerance, unity and hard work to take this country to greater heights", signed off Dr Dhillon.
