Dr. Jeyaraj Pandian has been elected as President of ISA

Dr Jeyaraj Durai Pandian Principal of CMC has been elected as President of Indian Stroke Association. He assumed his office in the month of March 2021 and his term will be for one year. He is also the current Vice-President of World Stroke Organisation and the Chair of Asian Stroke Advisory Panel.

Over the span of 20 years Dr Pandian has made immense contribution to stroke care in India and other low- and middle-income countries. He developed the Ludhiana Urban and Rural population-based stroke survey model which is being adapted by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to collect vital data on stroke in 5 remote regions of the country.

He is also instrumental in the development of stroke care in northeast India, Assam. With the support of ICMR two mobile stroke units has been launched in Tezpur and Dibrugarh. Ludhiana also should be getting another mobile stroke unit this year.

He started the Indian Stroke Clinical Trial Network (INSTRuCT) to carry out stroke clinical trials which are relevant to our nation. There are 30 stroke centers in this network, and it is funded by ICMR. There are two stroke trials which are recruiting patients now and 4 more trials have been approved by ICMR for funding.

He also developed the Tezpur stroke unit model demonstrating the effectiveness of a physician-based stroke unit in improving stroke care. Along with World Stroke Organization and World Health Organization Dr Pandian is doing a project in implementation of stroke care services in Maldives, Myanmar, Bhutan, Timor Leste, Nepal and Srilanka.

He is planning to raise awareness on stroke, work with various government national programs and implement a stroke center certification program in the country during his tenure as President of Indian Stroke Association.

Stroke or Brain attack is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the world. World Stroke Organization (WSO) is the world’s leading organization in the fight against stroke. WSO has more than 4000 individual members and over 60 society members from 85 different countries. The mission of WSO is to reduce the global burden of stroke through prevention, treatment and long-term care.

Dr Jeyaraj D Pandian, Principal of Christian Medical College (CMC) Ludhiana was recently elected as the Vice-President of WSO. In the WSO Board meeting which was held last month in Montreal, Canada, Dr Pandian took up this position. He is the first Neurologist from Asia Oceania region to be elected to this highly influential post. Dr Pandian said that in India there are 1.7 million new cases in a year, and 22% to 42% of these patients die within 1 month. In a survey done in urban Ludhiana in 2013, Dr.Pandian found a very high proportion of stroke patients (25%) in the city who were below 45 years of age.

Dr Pandian had earlier completed two terms as a board of director in WSO from 2008 and he served as a Chair, and also as a member in several committees with WSO. Dr Pandian has done research widely on stroke thrombolysis and stroke infrastructure in developing countries. Dr Pandian was the Co-chair of the World Stroke Congress 2016 held in Hyderabad, India. Through this position Dr. Pandian aims to develop stroke care services in South Asia, south East Asia and Africa. He is going to represent WSO in a major global policy meeting being organized by World Health Organisation (WHO) regarding use of medical technologies in stroke.

It is a matter of great honor for Ludhiana for the state of Punjab, and India that he has been elected as the first Asian at such a high post of WSO. Said Dr. William Bhatti, Director CMC, congratulated Dr. Jeyaraj Pandian for this achievement. Dr. Anil Luther, Medical Superintendent said that its matter of great pride and inspiration for the doctors in Punjab and Ludhiana to aspire.

Dr.Mahesh Kate, Head of Neurology added that the Stroke Unit of CMC Ludhiana has been providing state of the art clinical services in this region for more than 10 years. Recently the department added a new facility Neurointerventional Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) lab. Stroke patients who reach within 24 hrs can benefit from removing the clot in the brain using a stent. Dr. Kate added, CMC is the only such center which provides care which is focuses from prevention, treatment and rehabilitation in the region. Dr.Anirudh Kulkarni, Neurointerventionalist at CMC Ludhiana stated that stroke patients if they reach on time will be able to avail this new facility and treatment.

A Leading Cause of Disability in India

Ludhiana, 17th November, 2013: (Shalu Arora and Rector Kathuria): India, the world’s second most populous country, is facing the emergence of a “hidden” epidemic: disability due to neurologic diseases. The rapid economic, demographic, and social transformation of India in recent decades has already resulted in the double burden of unresolved epidemics of infectious diseases (e.g., malaria, tuberculosis) coupled with rising rates of chronic diseases (e.g., stroke, heart attack). This was stated by Professor Gourie Devi, former Director and Vice-Chancellor of National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore in the 31st Dr LH Lobo memorial oration. She said stroke, epilepsy, and traumatic brain injuries due to road traffic accidents are the major causes of disability in India.  She spoke also about the delivery of neurological services at different levels of care in India.

Dr LH Lobo memorial trust, Ludhiana has been organizing the Dr LH Lobo Memorial Oration and Scientific symposium for the last 30 years, in memory of the late Dr LH Lobo, an eminent and renowned Orthopaedic Surgeon and Former Head of Orthopaedic department and Principal of Christian Medical College (CMC), Ludhiana.   This year the 31st Dr LH Lobo Memorial Oration was organised by the department of Neurology, CMC on November 16th in the hospital auditorium. The inaugural function and the oration were conducted by Shri Sukhpat Rai Wadehra, President, Dr LH Lobo Memorial Trust and Dr MK Mahajan, Secretary, Padma Bhushan Prof JS Chopra, from Chandigarh was the Guest of Honour. Dr S Chopra gave the vote of thanks.

After the oration a CME on ”Management of Central Nervous System Infections” was organised by the department of Neurology, CMC Ludhiana. Prof Satishchandra Director and Vice-Chancellor of NIMHANS Bangalore gave a talk on the neurological manifestations in HIV patients.  Dr S Prabhakar, Head of Neurology, PGIMER, Chandigarh, updated the audience on the recent management of Bacterial meningitis. Prof Mathew Alexander HOD, Dept of Neurology, CMC Vellore spoke about the brain infection following measles virus. Prof Gourie Devi discussed about the various types of TB infection that can affect the brain.

Prof Yashpal Singh briefly talked about the common viral infection of the brain called Herpes simplex encephalitis. Prof Gagandeep Singh discussed various treatment options for Neurocysticercosis(tape worm) affecting the brain. Dr Jency Koshy gave a lecture on neurological complications that can occur due to Dengue fever. Dr DivyaDeodhar spoke about the current treatment of TB infection affecting the brain. Dr Vikas Loomba talked about the emerging infection called Scrub Typhus and its neurological manifestations. A PG Quiz on the Neuroinfections was held during the program. More than 200 delegates attended the program. Ludhiana City Stroke Registry

Ludhiana, 18th April, 2013:(Shalu Arora and Rector Kathuria):The department of neurology at Christian Medical College is conducting a “Population based stroke registry survey” sponsored by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). The epidemiology of stroke is well studied in the developed world. However, stroke in the developing world is less well studied. There is evidence that stroke incidence rates in developing countries have increased by more than 100% during the last four decades. Hence the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) initiated this unique National Task Force Project in Ludhiana since August 2010.

A stroke, also called ‘brain attack’ occurs when the vessels supplying blood to the brain is blocked. This results in the death of the brain cells. Depending on the area of the brain involved and the extent of brain cell death, the specific body functions such as speech, movement or memory may be affected. A stroke may be ischemic or hemorrhagic. Ischemic stroke: This is caused when a clot blocks a blood vessel in the brain shutting off the blood flow. Hemorrhagic stroke: This is caused by the rupture of a blood vessel in the brain.

The findings of the stroke registry has brought Ludhiana in the middle of the stroke storm hitting the world. The annual incidence of stroke in the city during the year 2011-12 is 162.3/100,000 lakh , which is the highest in the country. The number of first ever stroke patients identified till now in Ludhiana are 6840 with residents in the age group 18-45 being 20%. Hypertension was the most common risk factor followed by intake of desi ghee, diabetes and alcohol consumption. This suggests that the city has entered the “health transition” which includes the rapid socioeconomic growth, changes in lifestyle, stress and diet which increases the risk of stroke among the city residents.

All the major city health facilities are contributing in this registry but some patients are likely to have sought treatment outside the city due to any reason. To further improve the quality of data the Department of Neurology, CMC will offer free check-up to stroke patients who had received treatment outside the city of Ludhiana from August 2010 till March 2013. Ludhiana, 3rd March, 2013: The 8th National Conference of Indian Stroke Association organised by the department of Neurology, Christian Medical College, Ludhiana concluded today. There were 300 delegates who attended the conference from all over India including 18 International faculty members. Delegates also attended from the SAARC countries like Bangladesh. Yesterday there was a banquet for the delegates at the The Grand Pearl Resort. Mr Randhir Kanwal the famous Ghazal singer entertained the guests. The medical students also displayed their artistic talent with a Bhangra dance.
Dr Jeyaraj D Pandian, Professor and Head of Neurology at CMC Ludhiana, the organising Secretary mentioned that all the major advances in stroke diagnosis and treatments were discussed in the conference. On the last day a special session on research in stroke was held and delegates from across the world discussed about the on-going important stroke trials and projects.

A Skills workshop on the use of Botulinum toxin injection in treating stiffness of arms and legs following stroke was also held on the last day.
Dr Pandian said that for the first time a separate stroke rehabilitation skills workshop was held as a parallel meeting in CMC auditorium as part of the National stroke conference. More than 150 delegates attended this workshop which was organised by Dr Santosh Mathangi. One of the main highlights of the conference was the Teaching course on stroke which was held on Day 1 for MBBS students as a separate event at CMC. Medical students from three colleges in Punjab participated in this course.Dr Pandian stated that overall the conference had a major impact on the local doctors, neurologists, neurosurgeons, undergraduate medical students, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists and allied health trainees from across the country. National Stroke Conference in Ludhiana

250 delegates from India will be participating

Ludhiana, 25 Feb.2013:(Shalu Arora and Rector Kathuria): The department of Neurology at Christian Medical College, Ludhiana is organizing the 8th National Stroke Conference of Indian Stroke Association from March 1st to 3rd in Hotel Park Plaza. Dr Jeyaraj D Pandian the Organizing Secretary mentioned that about 250 delegates from all over India will be participating in the conference. He also added that 16 International and 25 National faculty will be delivering talks on various aspects of stroke in the conference. The honourable Health and Family Welfare Minister of Government of Punjab ShriMadan Mohan Mittal will be the Chief Guest during the Inauguration of the conference on March 1st at 5 pm. Dr Abraham G Thomas Director of CMC and the Patron of the conference lauded the efforts of the department of Neurology in bringing this conference to Ludhiana.

A special session on ABC of stroke is being planned on March 1st focusing on neurology trainees, physicians and general practitioners.  Dr Yashpal Singh the joint Organising Secretary mentioned that the latest advances in stroke treatment like clot bursting therapy (thrombolysis) will be discussed in the meeting.  Sessions on newer technologies and treatments will be the highlight of March 2nd program.  On March 3rd there will be a symposium on research and ongoing clinical trials in the area of stroke. The approach to long term problems after a stroke will be dealt in the last session of the conference.

There will be two parallel programs during the conference. On March 1st there will be a three hours teaching course on “Stroke”in the CMC Hospital auditorium for the MBBS students, junior doctors and Nurses. On March 2nd and 3rd a National skills workshop is being arranged in CMC Hospital auditorium on Stroke rehabilitation. This is for students, physiotherapists, speech therapists and occupational therapists. This workshop is being organised by Dr Santosh Mathangi, Associate Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and College of Physiotherapy (Mr Dheeraj KV and Mrs Benjamin, Vice-Principals).

The registration for the conference is still open and the organising committee has subsidised the registration fee for Physicians and Indian Medical Association members. Stroke Walk and Road Show by CMC Stroke Unit

Ludhiana, 29th October, 2012 (Shalu Arora and Rector kathuria) CMC Stroke Unit has been carrying out several public awareness activities in the city for the past 6 days. This is to commemorate the Stroke Week and World Stroke Day. The World Stroke Day is celebrated throughout the world on 29th October every year. Dr Jeyaraj D Pandian, Chair of the World Stroke Campaign of World Stroke Organization said that this year’s theme is “1 in 6” people will experience a stroke in their life time. 

The medical students, physiotherapy interns and students, doctors of CMC, Staff and Students of All Saints College of Physiotherapy had gathered near Hotel Park Plaza today for the “Stroke Walk”. The number of people who participated in the walk was 120. During the walk they displayed placards, educational leaflets to the public. They concluded the walk near canal road. Another team of doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and students in a separate vehicle did the road show. They passed through Sarabha Nagar, civil lines, model town and various Malls in the city. In the road show emphasis was placed on recognition of stroke symptoms and accessing to immediate treatment of stroke within 4 ½ hours. Dr Santosh Mathangi, Consultant, Physical Medicine Rehabilitation department who organized the stroke walk and road show stated that after the medical treatment patients should receive rehabilitation in the form of Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy and Speech therapy. 

Yesterday the team went to West End Mall and screened about 100 people for the risk factors of stroke. They also distributed stroke awareness pamphlets to the public.

The other key personnel involved in organizing the Stroke walk and Road show were Ms Lizzy Julia, Ms Rajni Arora,  College of Physiotherapy, Mr Navneet Singh, Mr Devan, Ms Deepika Sharma, Mr Dheeraj KV, Vice Principal, College of Physiotherapy, research staff of department of Neurology (Mr Amber Sharma, Dr Shweta Jain, Mrs Gagandeep Mehmi, Dr Deepti Arora, Mr Himanshu Koundal, Ms Raminder Kaur, Mrs Paramdeep Kaur) and students and interns of College of Physiotherapy CMC and All Saints College of Physiotherapy.

The stroke team at CMC is available 24/7 to rapidly evaluate stroke patients who come within the golden time of 4 ½ hours after the onset of symptoms. The stroke warning symptoms are sudden weakness, numbness in one side of the body, sudden trouble speaking or understanding, sudden loss of vision in one eye, sudden imbalance, sudden headache and loss of consciousness.
