Dr Jeyaraj D Pandian is the Principal of CMC Ludhiana

Dr Jeyaraj D Pandian, Principal, Christian Medical College, Ludhiana has been selected as the President Elect (2022-2024) and President (2024 to 2026) of World Stroke Organisation (WSO). He is the first Neurologist from Asia to be appointed to this highly influential position. He took over this post on October 28th at the World Stroke Congress which was held in Singapore. Dr Pandian has been in the WSO Board since 2008 and completed 4 years as Vice-President of WSO from 2018.

World Stroke Organisation is the one voice for stroke. The WSO mission is to reduce the global burden of stroke through more effective prevention, better treatment, and long-term support. The headquarters is in Geneva and WSO has more than 3500 members from across the globe. WSO works closely with World Health Organisation (WHO) in influencing health policies related to stroke treatment and prevention. 

Dr Pandian stated that stroke or brain attack is the one of the leading causes of death and disability in India. Each year 1.8 million new stroke cases occur in the country and every 40 seconds one Indian suffers a stroke. One stroke death occurs every 4 minutes in the nation. Stroke is a preventable and treatable disease. High blood pressure is the main cause for stroke. 

Dr Pandian’s vision and mission for the next 4 years is to implement stroke units across India and in Asian and African countries. He has been involved in the development of stroke units in district government and the Medical College hospitals in Punjab since 2016. Recently on November 1st along with WSO and NABH he launched the stroke centre certification program for India in New Delhi. CMC Ludhiana is the first stroke centre in India to go through the assessment process. He said that this will pave way for delivering high quality health care to stroke patients in the country.

Dr Pandian is being involved with WHO Southeast Regional Office New Delhi in implementing stroke care services in Bhutan, Myanmar, Timor Leste, Maldives, Sri Lanka and Nepal. He plans to expand to other WHO Regions in the world.

CMC Ludhiana stroke program is the only center in northwest region to offer highly effective treatment like clot retrieval using stents in blocked arteries (thrombectomy) in the brain. Dr Vivek Aggarwal, Neurointerventionist said that over the last 4 years more than 800 procedures have been done at CMC. He added that the public should be aware about the stroke warning symptoms. Patients present with sudden numbness, paralysis, in one side of the body: sudden trouble speaking, sudden headache, giddiness and unconsciousness. Dr Rajeswar, Associate Professor of Neurology mentioned that patients and relatives should reach CMC quickly to avail the clot bursting injection (0-4.5 hrs) and thrombectomy (0-24hrs). 

Dr Loganathan, Rehabilitation physician at CMC said that a new rehabilitation center has been started last month to cater to the stroke patient’s recovery following a stroke. Dr Dorcas Gandhi, Professor of Physiotherapy mentioned that it is very important for stroke patients to undergo regular physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy which will speed up the recovery process. There are low-cost robotic technology available at CMC Stroke program for rehabilitation of stroke patients.

Under health education drive of Mission Punarjot, Dr. Ramesh MD Director, Punarjot eye bank Ludhiana organised a special event at Dr Ramesh super speciality eye and laser centre Ludhiana to sensitise patient safety in health care delivery system on World Patient day. 

He told on the occasion that for World Patient Safety Day, 17 September 2021, WHO urges all stakeholders to “Act now for safe and respectful childbirth!” with the theme “Safe maternal and newborn care”. Approximately 810 women die every day from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth. In addition, around 6700 newborns die every day, amounting to 47% of all under-5 deaths. Moreover, about 2 million babies are stillborn every year, with over 40% occurring during labour. Considering the significant burden of risks and harm women and newborns are exposed to due to unsafe care, compounded by the disruption of essential health services caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the campaign is even more important this year. 

Fortunately, the majority of stillbirths and maternal and newborn deaths are avoidable through the provision of safe and quality care by skilled health professionals working in supportive environments. This can only be achieved through the engagement of all stakeholders and the adoption of comprehensive health systems and community-based approaches.  

He further added that we are working for control of blindness in Punjab from last three decades with utmost care and full patient safety especially for community ophthalmology and super speciality eye care services. 

Presently Govt of India have laid down international standards in health under quality council of India to maintain high quality health care and patient safety norms. 

Private hospitals are being encouraged to have full accreditation as National accredatition of board of hospital as NABH mark where one can trust quality and safety while having health treatment. 

We have eye bank accreditation from Punjab govt from 2008, safe I, hospital infection control accreditation from quality council of India from 2014 and full NABH accreditation from 2017 to ensure best eye care and patient safety in region with super speciality eye care services with international standards especially who can't afford. We also always motivate others health organizations, NGO's and public for role of pateints safety measures to save human lives and better health through social media, exhibition, seminars and trainings. 

World Patient Safety Day was established in 2019 to enhance global understanding of patient safety, increase public engagement in the safety of health care and promote global actions to enhance patient safety and reduce patient harm. We should work collectively to save human lives by understanding the concept of World Patient Safety Day.

He mentionedduring his speech about the comphrensive care given by department of PaediatricSurgery from last 50 years.  Dr. GurmeetChaudhry, Head of Department and Professor, Dept. of Paediatric Medicine toldthat September is celebrated as international childhood cancer month. She alsotold that white spot in eye, lump in abdomen , unexplained fever, weightloss,  fatigue, easy bruising andbleeding are common signs of cancer in childhood. Unlike adult 80% childhoodcancers are completely treatable if detected early. Dr. Parvez David Haque, HOD,Dept. of General surgery also attended the event and took the lead in the Lamp LightingCeremony. Dr. Reena Jairus, Principal, College of nursing and Prof Mrs. Premlata, Head ofChildcare Nursing as well as Mrs Jatinder Kaur from paediatric nursing,  Dr. Vishal Michael  and Dr. Tanvi Goel  from Department of Paediatric surgery also spokeat the event about the theme: Together we fight, We will be Better as also theimportance of nursing in childhood cancers. CMC conducts training workshop for doctors

The revised basic course workshop and training in attitudes, ethics and communication (AETCOM) module under aegis of medical council of India started at Christian Medical College Ludhiana. A total of 30 medical teachers from various medical colleges of Punjab, J&K, Assam and Chandigarh are the participants. Dr. Tejinder Singh, Convenor of the Nodal Training Center at CMC informed that we have been conducting such training since 2009 as part of MCI initiative and have covered about 2000 teachers so far. The training on soft skills for doctors is being increasingly emphasized the world over. Principal of the college Dr. Jeyaraj Pandiyan stressed the role of teacher training to meet the proposed changes in medical education so that the doctors stay relevant to health needs of the people. Dr. Karamvir Goyal graced the occasion as representative of the Punjab Medical Council.

Dr. Gagandeep Kwatra, in charge of the course informed about interactive nature of the program. Dr.JugeshChhatwal, Dr.Dinesh Badyal, Dr.Monika Sharma, Dr.Bharti Uppal, Dr.Sheena Singh and Dr.Aroma Oberoi  are the faculty members for the course.

We need to  consider quantity rationing  of water usage by stopping free electricity and curb the subsidy on fertilizer over five years, said Dr Montek Singh Ahluwalia, eminent economist and former Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission, Government of India while delivering his talk on " Challenges in Agriculture: Some Policy Options” at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today. 14 students and scientists of PAU were awarded the G.S. Khush travel grant for participation in conferences in India and abroad, while another 38 from PAU and 14 from GADVASU  were bestowed with the G.S. Khush Merit Scholarship at the annual award ceremony of the  Gurdev Singh Khush Foundation for Advancement of Agricultural Sciences. The dignitaries on the dais also included Dr Gurdev Singh Khush, PAU alumnus and father of the rice revolution, Mrs Harwant Khush, Dr B.S. Dhillon, PAU Vice Chancellor, Dr S.S. Johl, Chancellor, Central University of Punjab, Dr K.S. Gill, former Vice Chancellor, PAU, Dr A.S. Nanda, Vice Chancellor, GADVASU and Dr D.S. Brar, Secretary, Khush Foundation.

 Dr Ahluwalia, while addressing a huge gathering of faculty members at the Pal Auditorium emphasized on the need to have an educated and informed electorate so that government leaders can be held accountable for relevant targets. He also pointed the absence of a risk mitigating system in agriculture that is one of the chief reasons of farm distress. While stressing on the need for pro farmer policies Dr Ahluwalia recalled the period from 2004 to 2011 when the country reported increase in farm income and biggest decline in poverty. “The factors responsible were better land productivity, supportive prices for farmers, boom in construction investment and increase in farm product prices”, he elaborated.  Dr Ahluwalia further stressed on the need to diversify from cereals to horticultural crops and setting of transformational targets to capture these changes over a period of ten years. “ Diversification to maize can be an important change for Punjab as also dairy if the CM’s objective of getting out of paddy is to be achieved”, he observed.  While suggesting the development of integrated value chains as a part of the ‘plough to plate’ approach, Dr Ahluwalia appealed for conviction on the part of the policy makers towards eliminating policy constraints.  He highlighted the imminent need for judicious use of water which he said can be achieved by having public sector pumps responsible for quantity rationing.  Voicing his concern in the field of research, the economist said that we need to think about institution structures and vested interests in the system that deny flexibility to the academia to do ground breaking research.  He called for shift in attitude and more clarity towards the requirement of GM crops, failing which we will be negatively unique in the world, given the high degree of threat of climate change that looms in front of us. Dr G.S. Khush congratulated the award winners and motivated them to strive for further excellence in their fields. He also urged the rural students to dream and work hard to achieve them.  

Earlier Dr Dhillon welcomed the dignitaries and formally introduced the speaker of the day. He dismissed agricultural distress in the state citing record productivity in non basmati rice, wheat and cotton, and rather stressed on the need for strong policy interventions to boost agriculture in Punjab.

Results of PAU contest on Suicide Prevention declared

The results of first ever youth contest in the state by Punjab Agricultural University on suicide prevention were announced here today. Dr. Gurinder Kaur Sangha, Dean, College of Basic Science & Humanities, PAU disclosed that there were a total of 873 entries in essay, story, poetry, slogan and poster contest. About 68 institutions spread across 19 districts of the state participated. A panel of 16 eminent judges including stalwarts in the respective fields judged all the entries. She stated that the initiative was held to sensitise and mobilise the society for suicide prevention interventions.

Govt. College for Girls, Ludhiana organized an installation ceremony of  the  Red Cross Society in collaboration with Anti Drug Society . Prof. (Dr.) Mohinder Kaur Grewal, Principal of the college was the Chief Guest on the occasion. The principal was given floral welcome by Mrs. Kiranjit Kaur Brar, Miss Satveer Kaur, Mrs. Gurwinder Kaur and Mrs. Rosy Nagpal. While addressing the students, the hon'ble chief guest shared her words of wisdom and enlightenment with the students. Badges were given to all the office bearers and executive members of the society by the chief guests as a form of blessings and best wishes for future responsibilities. A PowerPoint presentation was presented by the students followed by delightful Punjabi song and cultural performance. At the end of the ceremony Prof.(Dr.) Mohinder Kaur Grewal gave her blessings and precious remarks. The ceremony, thus came to an end by Student in charge Red Cross Society, Gurleen Kaur giving a vote of thanks.

Closing Ceremony of Commerce Society and Consumer Forum

  Department of commerce organized the closing ceremony of commerce society and consumer forum at Govt. College for Girls, Ludhiana in the college auditorium. Prof. (Dr.) Pushpinder Singh Gill, Professor at the school of management studies, Punjabi University Patiala came as the chief guest on the occasion. He was accorded a warm welcome by College Principal Prof. (Dr.) Mohinder Kaur Grewal and Dr. Gurpreet Kaur, Head of Commerce department.

 On this occasion, Dr. Gill delivered a lecture on "Future of Marketing". He threw light on converting the traditional methods of 4P's (Product, Price, Place and Promotion) to 4C's (Customer, Cost, Convenience, Communication) respectively. There was an interactive session with the students in which the guest speaker answered the queries of the students. The Students of commerce department mesmerized the audience with a beautiful cultural program. A musical skit on demonetization, welcome song, PPT on consumer awareness were main highlights of the program.   The principal of the college Prof.(Dr.) Mohinder Kaur Grewal and chief guest appreciated the teachers and students of commerce department and gave away trophies and certificate to the winners. PAU Celebrated Republic Day

In spite of rainy weather the 68th Republic Day of the country was  at Punjab Agricultural University, today with great enthusiasm. The Vice Chancellor, Dr.Baldev Singh Dhillon unfurled the tricolor and took salute from the NCC cadets. The function saw the presence of Deans, Directors, faculty, staff and students.

In his address to the audience, Dr Dhillon paid tributes to the freedom fighters while highlighting the pivotal role played by Punjabis to attain independence. The day holds greater significance as on this day in 1929, a pledge for “Poorna Swaraj” was taken in Lahore”, he said.

While congratulating the faculty and students for their efforts in bringing glory to PAU, the Vice Chancellor gave credit to the Department of Farm Machinery and Power Engineering for their contribution towards controlling the white fly attack. He also mentioned the highly successful PAU paddy variety, PR121 that produced a record yield last year in comparison to the PUSA 44 variety. “We are looking forward to the introduction of the Super Straw Management (SMS) system to prevent burning of paddy stubble by farmers”, revealed Dr Dhillon and further briefed about PAU’s achievements in the field of Horticulture, Biofertilizer production, and pesticide and fertilizer reduction. The Vice Chancellor while applauding the winners of various national awards, said that it was great honour for PAU as 3 students from the university were selected for the Prime Minister’s Fellowship, 2 PhD students won the Jawahar Lal Nehru Award and 8 Borlaug fellowships were awarded to PAU.

Dr Dhillon urged the audience to strive towards an efficient work culture and focus on the areas of agro processing and marketing so as to effectively bridge gap between demand and supply. “Discipline and hard work are the keys to develop a healthy society and thus to progress,” he remarked.

Earlier, Dr.Ravinder Kaur Dhaliwal, Director Students Welfare welcomed the Chief Guest, and motivated the students to pay attention to character building and help in eradicating social evils. Sweets were distributed to mark the celebration.

Thousands benefited from 3 day Medical Camp in Barnala

Camp organized by CMC Hospital & Trident Group

Chrisitan medical college (CMC) and Hospital, Ludhiana organized three days multispecialty health camp in collaboration with Trident Group at the Arun memorial community center at Barnala from 2nd to 4th of November’2016.

The camp was inaugurated by Mr. Rajinder Gupta, Director of the Trident Group and Dr. Abraham G Thomas, Director CMC Hospital, Ludhiana. Several dignitaries from the town, community leaders, politicians, government officials and sarpanchas from around 60 villages were also present for the inauguration.

The Medical teams consisted of doctors from Surgery, Gynecology, Pediatrics, Pathology, Microbiology, psychiatry, dermatology, medicine, ENT, Eye, Orthopedics, Plastic Surgery, Nephrology, Neurology, Cardiology, CTVS, Medicine, Dental, Pharmacy and Community medicine.

On first day of the camp around 1,160 patients were examined, on second day 1,690 benefited from the camp, and today on 4th November by the time this news was sent 1,500 patients had already visited the camp and many more were coming.

Dr. Abraham G Thomas, Director, CMC Hospital said, in this mega medical camp team of 35 doctors will be doing the check-up for the patients. The camp is equipped the camp with digital x-ray which processes the reports in no time. The team will be working under Dr. Clarance, head of the Rural Health Outreach program (RHOP). Team of 35 of technicians, nursing and other help staff will also be helping the team of 35 doctors. Medical bus is also there for minor operations.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Clarance said, that CMC will continue to serve the community with such camps and next date for the camps will be from 7th -11th November, then again from 16th – 18th November, then it will continue in December from 30th November to 2nd December, and 7th December to 9th December.

RHOP department at CMC, Ludhiana coordinates camps like these in far- flung and remote villages in Ludhiana and other parts of Punjab. For some doctors the opportunity to bring their skills and services to many who deprived of quality health care and be able to touch lives is a reward in itself.

BCM MUN -2016 Reaches Culmination

BCM held the closing ceremony of Model United Nations which opened on Friday morning, and kicked off a full schedule of debate, problem solving and collaboration surrounding simulated situations in international affairs.

During three day long conference, participants represented a country   formed a resolution group with other countries to meet their combined interests on a certain topic and determine future course of action following days of debating.

Ashwini Kumar Bakshi ,said that the range of situations is wide and not limited to current affairs.Mr.Rushil , MUN Chief of Staff and Ms. Japjit, MUN Convener presented glimpses of events of three days.The videos, created by Rachit and Aryaman , showcased on the closing ceremony, were representative of the liveliness and the effort towards learning that was present throughout the event. The ambience was uplifting.

Speaking on the importance of having intra-school MUNs, Dr. Paramjit Kaur, the School Principal said, “Through this, we are helping the school students do better in the competitive MUN culture and bring out Competitiveness. Our tagline is 'Making future leaders' and that's what we intend to do.”

The closing ceremony came to an end with awards given off to the best performing delegates in each committee by their respective chairs and finally with teachers, who observed the event unfold closely, sing praises of the students for their achievement. The performances that were part of the closing ceremony was greatly appreciated by the cultural connoisseurs.The MUN had the maximum number of I.P  member’s i.e.85.

A vote of thanks was proposed by Secretary General Mohak Thukral who thanked all executive committee members, partners, sponsors and participants for helping to make the event a success.

In memory of Professor Dr L. H. Lobo, the first Indian Principal of CMC Ludhiana the Dr L H Lobo Memorial Trust conducts an annual Oration at CMC Hospital, Ludhiana.  This year Padma Shree Prof. Kamal K. Sethi, Past President of Cardiological Society of India and currently Chairman and Director of Cardiology at Delhi Heart and Lung Institute, delivered the 34^th Dr L. H. Lobo Memorial Oration on “Current blood pressure goals in treating hypertension on Saturday 8^th October, 2016 which was attended by the  distinguished citizens of Ludhiana, doctors from the city, faculty, staff and students of CMC Ludhiana.

Prof Kamal K. Sethi stressed on the strict blood pressure control to prevent the harmful effects of high blood pressure.

A scientific symposium was held after the oration on ‘Recent advances in Cardiology’.  Prof Pramesh Kovoor, Director Cardiac Services, Westmead Hospital in Sydney, Australia delivered the keynote address on ‘Management of Myocardial infarction (Heart attack)’.

Dr Rajneesh Calton, Professor and Head, Department of Cardiology at CMC and Organizing Secretary of the conference informed that scientific sessions included national level speakers on various topics like Cardiogenic Shock Paradigm shift by Prof Yashpaul Sharma, PGI, Chandigarh, Atrial fibrillation and Stroke prevention: Role of NOAC by Prof. Mohan Nair, New Delhi and Aldosterone inhibitors – A Medical ICD : an untold story by Dr Rajiv Agarwal, Meerut.

An Enriching Simulation of the UN for Students

Amid much enthusiasm, a three-day Model United Nations (MUN), 2016 convention was kicked off on friday at the BCM Arya School with an aim of providing students a realistic simulation of a diplomatic environment and  enhance their skills of critical analysis and operative dialogue to have them plunge into the issues which plague humanity in today’s world.

Addressing the delegates, Chief Guest Mr. Deepak Vohra, Additional Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs said, “Youngsters today are very keen to learn, talented and vibrant and platforms like these should reach out to each and every nook and corner of our country,” “Many of our problems  are global in nature and  cannot be properly addressed if we act in isolation from other nations.” said  Vohra 
“We need to know...how this world works, in 2016 and the future -- more than ever before because I think that we are still the best choice to lead that world of equals. You need to be ready to do that,” said he.

Featured with 8 different committees and councils, the conference allowed some 500 school level debaters from different schools to don the hats as diplomats and law-makers from all over the world and promised to serve as an enriching learning experience for one and all.

Delegates from Germany and Mexico were also part of  BCM MUN which seamlessly exemplified school’s fundamental conviction of fostering comprehensive front-runners and encouraged participants to frame and pass resolutions on debating issues like UNGA: “Assessing the impact on International peace and security due to the South China issue”, UNSC: Radical Islanic fundamentalism and the threat it poses to International peace and security”, UNHRC: Elimination of all forms of violence against women and children with special emphasis on post conflict areas” and AIPPM: Discussions over implementations of a uniform civil code, discussions over alleged saffronisation of of education.”

The Conference officially opened with speeches by Director General Sonal Sharma along with Gauravdeep, Chief Advisor and Secretary General Mohak Thukral. The attraction of the opening ceremony was the eye-catching Classical Dance Performance which enthralled the audience.

Dr. Paramjit Kaur, the school Principal, in her keynote address said that MUN 2016 would be an extremely important learning experience for students, wherein they understand current affairs, debate techniques and research skills and subsequently giving them a holistic learning experience.  She expressed gratitude towards the Delegates, Executive Board members and members for making this conference a great success. She exhorted the students to do one random act of kindness daily to set the world in right direction.

The three-day conference will test the preparedness of the delegates and their understanding of the countries they represent, as well as the issues under discussion.

Festival of “Victory of good over Evil”  celebrated

Police DAV Public School, Police Line Ludhiana celebrated the festival of “Victory of good over Evil’’ on Friday, October 07, 2016. On the occasion of Dusshera, kindergarten students came clad up as Ram, Laxman, Sita, Hanuman and Ravana. The festive mood gripped the students as they saw the effigy of Ravana, made up of waste papers and bamboo sticks. Students enjoyed watching Ramayana through a Ram Leela enacted by the kindergartener students. Music and Hymns in the praise of almighty Lord Ram were echoed in the school premises. The festive spirit culminated the celebration by blowing the hot air balloons and finally setting Ravana to flames. The children cheered and clapped as fire crackers entwined around Ravana burst creating an astounding light and sound. The festival was celebrated with great enthusiasm and gaiety. Dr. Mrs. Anu Verma, the Principal of the school greeted the staff and students on the occasion of Dusshera. She added the burning of the effigy of Ravana symbolized not only the victory of good over evil but also, an occasion to get rid of the demons that reside within us.

Dowryless, Inter-caste marriage system introduced by Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji

The Namdhari Sikhs known as Kukas in the political annals of India are rightly called "Torch bearer of India's freedom struggle."Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji, the master planner of freedom movement in India, founded Namdhari Sect on 12th April, 1857, at Sri Bhaini Sahib (Dist.Ludhiana, Punjab).At that time,India was under the yoke of British Empire.Simultaneously, the people of India were depressed under the evil customs of the society also.

Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji mobilized the people for the freedom of their country and against the evil customs of the society as well.He inculcated religious awareness among the people because it evokes the feeling of self- respect and sacrifices for the sake of the country. In a short period, lacs of people flocked to him and they became fully aware of their serfdom and of bondage.

In the 19th century, killing girl-child in infancy and her sale-purchase was a daily occurrence in India.The main cause behind these pernicious customs was the enormous burden of marriage expenses and illiteracy. Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji laid emphasis on the education of both boys and girls. He introduced a new expense-less system of mass marriages which is called "Anand Kaaraj". The dowry, marriage procession and various other formalities associated with wed-lock were stopped. The first ever intercaste mass marriages were performed on 3rd June, 1863 in village Khote distt. Ferozepur, Punjab. Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji made every effort to give respect and equal status to women in the society. S.Kapoor Singh I.C.S. writes in his book 'Sapat Sring', "If we set aside all good deeds of Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji on one side which he preached for goodness of whole mankind and the country, only his preaching for equal rights for men and women in the society take him to list of supreme reformers of the world". The preaching of Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji, changed the feelings of public.

Mr.J.W.Mechab, Commissioner Ambala had mentioned in his report dt.4.11.71.

"I see in earlier papers that Ram Singh was looked upon as a successor or actual re-embodiment of Guru Nanak the sant. He is now the representative of Guru Gobind Singh the warrior". Actually,"The object of Ram Singh and his disciples were not merely religious, but that under the guise of a religious reformer and teacher of moral precepts, he harboured deep political design".

NON CO-OPERATION MOVEMENT

Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji was the pioneer and first in the world history who used Non Co-operation as a weapon to free his country from the yokes of British Empire. It was much earlier than Mahatma Gandhi Ji talked of it.Dr.Rajinder Prasad, the first President of India, wrote in 1935 in his article in "The Satyug."

"Guru Ram Singh believed in the political freedom as part of religion.The organisation of the Namdhari became considerably strong.The movement of Boycott and Non-Co-operation, which Mahatma Gandhi started so vigorously in our times was preached by Guru Ram Singh 50 years ago as cult for the Namdharis.Guru Ram Singh's Non-Co-operation movement contained the following five essentials:-

1.  Boycott of Government service.

2.  Boycott of educational institution opened by British.

3.  Boycott of Law-courts started by British.

4.  Boycott of foreign made Goods.

5.  Boycott of obey and resist the Laws & orders which owns conscience abhors.

NAMDHARI SIKHS ARE SEDIATORS

Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji, set up his own postal system. Diplomatic relations were established with native states & neighbouring countries such as Nepal, Afganistan & Russia etc. In 1869-70 a seperate regiment "KOOKA PLATOON" was created in Kashmir state."His excellency (Sri Jung Bahadur) appeared to have been impressed with a sense of strength & standing they (KOOKA) had already obtained in the country". He further remarked "They (KOOKA) would probably prove a source of trouble to the British Government".(Col.R.C.Lawrence C.B., British residence at Nepal, mentioned in his letter dt.27/11/1871.)

To consolidated their power, the Britishers had adopted the policy of dividing the population on religion and communal basis. They first issued orders that "No one should be allowed to interfere with the practice by his neighbour and of customs,which that neighbours religion either enjoins or permits". Then Muslims were encouraged to practice cow killing. This was totally against the religious practices and sentiments of Hindus and Sikhs. Namdhari Sikhs understood the policy of British Government. Namdharis revolted against British Rule. They raided the slaughter house at Amritsar on 15th June, 1871 and then Raikot on 15th July,1871. The British Government reacted quickly. But could not able to arrest the real persons who had raided the slaughter houses. As per British Govt. document No.1060, Dated 10/09/1871, "No evidence was available in the case, till on the order of the Guru Ram Singh,the real culprits (Namdhari) presented themselves before the judge". Three Namdharis were hanged on 5th August 1871 ar Raikot, four at Amritsar on 15th September 1871 and two at Ludhiana on 26th November, 1871

Under the leadership of S.Hira Singh and S.Lehna Singh, Namdhari Sikhs attacked Malerkotla on 15th January,1872. There was a fierce fighting. The Kukas fought bravely, persons from both the sides were killed. S.Hira Singh also lost his left arm.In the evening,this group of Namdharis went to village Rarh. S.Hira Singh addressed the group."We had achieved our target. We had conveyed our feelings to the British Government that now the Indians had woken up. They would neither tolerate foreign rule nor hurt to their religious sentiments and self respect".Then all of them resolved to surrender before the authority. At that time the ruler of Malerkotla State was a minor.Mr.Cowen was working as a Superintendent of the Council of Administration. He immediately sent the force to bring all the arrested Namdharis revolutionists to Malerkotla parade ground. He had got nine cannons from neighbouring state. He had made up his mind to blow all the rebels Namdharis with cannons who had attacked Malerkotla.It was evening of 17th Jan.1871, when the brave Namdharis reached the parade ground of Malerkotla.Now a days this ground is known as "Kukian da Shaheedi Rakkar".Mr.Cowen conducted no trail. Even the name of persons were not recorded.He immediately ordered to tie the rebels Namdharis to the cannon's mouth. But the Namdharis refused saying"They would come to the cannons mouth themselves turn by turn". Once again Mr.Cowen proposed them to stand with their backs to the cannons. But again the Kukas replied that only the cowards die a death by receiving the shots on the backs. They would die a brave death getting the shots in their chests. Before order to shoot,Mr.Cowen questioned group leader S.Hira Singh,'Why they had attacked Malerkotla?'.S.Hira Singh replied very firmly and boldly, "We want rule of their own brothers ................your justice is lie.Your death and down fall is near .....................We shall be born again,hold the sword in our own hands and wage a war which will destroy your rule." Then seven cannons were set to fire and seven were blown. Seven times the seven cannons were set to fire and all the times seven Namdharis i.e.49 in total bestowed their lives for the independence of India. A young boy of twelve, Bishan Singh was asked by Mr. & Mrs.Cowen to renunciate Guru Ram Singh Ji and Namdharism to save his life. As soon as Bishan Singh heard these words which insulted his master,his eyes became balls of fire. Like a lion,with a leap he pounced on Mr.Cowen and caught hold of his beard and pulled it so hard that Mr.Cowen's life was put in danger. Mr.Cowen wrote about this incident as,"One man escaped from the guards and made a furious attack on me, seizing me by the beard and endeavouring to strangle me and as he was a very powerful man. I had a considerable difficulty in releasing myself".Mr.Cowen was saved by native officers who cut the hands & head of Bishan Singh with their swords. Next day, on 18th January, 16 more Namdharis were blown off with the cannons. On this day, S.Waryam Singh was rather short. He was asked to go back as he fallen short of cannon range. As a matter of fact,he was related to the Maharaja of Patiala, so Warayam Singh was asked to go back. Warayam Singh ran at once,brought some pebbles and sods of earth from the nearby fields and prepared a small platform. Standing upon it, he challanged the gunman to fire as his height was now match with the level of cannon mouth.

The government was waiting since long time for an appropriate opportunity.The government took this occasion of Malerkotla as affording an opportunity for exercising its absolute power for crushing the Namdhari Sikhs.Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji and prominent Subas were arrested and exiled.

Shri Satguru Ram Singh Ji exiled to Burma from Calcutta Port in March 1872.The residence of Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji, now called Gurudwara Sri Bhaini Sahib,(Dist.Ludhiana, Punjab) was raided by the police. A strong police post was stationed at the main gate of residence of Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji,which remained there for full 50 years. Namdharis were ordered not to hold meeting and leave place of their residence without informing the police or village head. More than five Namdhari Sikhs could not assemble at a place. The whole Namdhari community was treated like sediators. Hundreds of Namdhari Sikhs were sent to jails or deported to Andemann Island and their properties were seized.But Namdharis were undaunted by rigrous imprisioned life and the prosecution of the police. They continiously fought for the freedom of India under the benign & inspiring guidance of Satguru Hari Singh Ji & Satguru Partap Singh Ji. "The truth is that it is not possible for a kuka to be loyal subject of the British Government," (In "Ludhiana District GAzetteer-1904)In the mean time,Indian National Congress had been organised. Namdhari Sikhs joined hands with the Congress. They organised number of conferences at various places in Punjab at arouse the people against the British tyrrany.In 1925, the congress started a special campaign from Bradella Hall in Lahore. Namdharis participated in this movement fully, stood at the forefront and faced arrests. In Dec.1929 Annual Session of congress was organised in Lahore. Namdhari Sikhs had not only taken part in the session but also provided free food to every participant.The Daily Tribune, Lahore published a news on 27.12.1929,"Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru was riding a horse. It was a beautiful white charger. Behind him were the G.O.C and other officers of the volunteers corps. The most striking feature was the Sikh cavalary dressed in white spotless khadi and wearing stylish turbans. The Namdharis with their flowing beards presenting a thrilling sight."At State people Conference on 17th Feb.1939 in Ludhiana, a great procession was organised in protest of British rule in India. Pt.Nehru was heading this procession. When Netaji Subash Chandra Bose organised the AZAD HIND FAUJ with its centre in Bangkok (Thailand),Namdharis of Thailand help him all the way.Subash Chandra Bose said that, "The banner for freedom given to Indians by Satguru Ram Singh and the sacrifices done by Namdhari Sikhs will be a matter of great pride for the Indians.The Namdhari Sikh, experienced for three quarters of century for their peaceful non-co-operation movement,are expected to carry forward the banner of freedom in the forefront and will encourage sacrifices. Guru Ram Singh is the first leader of the peaceful non-co-operation movement in India."In 1945, Vavel Conference was held in Shimla. All the patriots and political parties participated in the conference. Sri Satguru Ram SIngh Ji,also reached Shimla with Namdhari Sikhs. Pt.Nehru asked Sri Satguru Ji,"What do you want? What are your dreams?" 'Satguru Partap Singh Ji replied him,"My want, wish and demand is only India's freedom'. On account of these pioneering efforts & sacrifices of Namdharis and all other patriotic forces,India attained independence on 15th August,1947. Pt.Nehru had written in the 'Satyug'  "No Indian can deny the importance of efforts put in by Satguru Ram Singh and his followers Namdhari Sikhs, seventy five years ago in acheiving freedom of the country. Congress merely followed the path shown by them and attained Independence." Mrs.Indira Gandhi,the late Prime Minister of India hadn said on March 16,1981,"Our freedom movement gathered strength by attracting every important section of society from every region.
