Meeting opposed his stand on Paris agreement
Ludhiana: 4 June 2017: (Punjab Screen Bureau)::
The Bharat Jan Gyan Vigyan Jatha has criticized US President Donald Trump for pulling out of Paris agreement on climate change. After a meeting of the Jatha held under the chairmanship of its president Shri Ranjit Singh it was said that this act of Trump is a total violation of international commitments. The Paris agreement is based on commitment to prevent climate change by reducing the carbon production. Through this agreement the developed countries, who are responsible for excess carbon concentration in the atmosphere, which is causing green house effect and thus climate change will take steps to mitigate this harmful change.  Under the agreement the polluter countries would pay back in form of carbon credits to the developed countries to keep up their economies. Whereas the whole world agrees to this the US has now pulled out. Not only that trump has given a statement against India accusing us of having desire to extract billions.   This is totally wrong, uncalled for and against all norms and forms of international relations based on mutual respect. The govt. of India should give an effective reply to this statement of trump. Those who participated in the deliberations include Dr Arun Mitra, M S Bhatia, I S Sodhi, Dr Rajinder Pal singh Aulakh, Rector Kathuria, Pardeep Sharma.

NASA Administrator Pays Tribute to Astronaut Scott Kelly

Mon, Mar 14, 2016 at 10:14 PM
We will never forget the 700 stunning images he posted
The following is a statement from NASA Administrator Charles Bolden on the retirement of astronaut Scott Kelly:
“When the first Americans set foot on Mars, they will be following in the footsteps of one of the finest astronauts in the history of the space program, my friend, Commander Scott Kelly.  After spending an American record 520 days in space – including his Year in Space – I can think of no one more deserving of some well-deserved rest and time on the same planet as his family and friends.

“All of us in the NASA family -- and indeed in the broader scientific community -- are grateful that he was willing to sacrifice time with his loved ones, meals that don’t come in a bag, a cold beer, hot showers, cool autumn breezes, the sounds of birds chirping, the ability to lay his head on an actual pillow and so much more of the pleasures of life during his year of research and experimentation the International Space Station.

“We will never forget the 700 stunning images he posted to social media, the leadership he demonstrated as ISS Commander for the last six months and, most of all, the impact that all his missions and years of service will continue to have on our Journey to Mars.”

CPI Protest Against Israeli Bombing on Gaza Strip at Doraha

Sat, Aug 16, 2014 at 6:12 PM
Many CPI leaders addressed the gathering
Ludhiana: 16 August 2014: (Punjab Screen Bureau):
The communist Party of India (CPI) held a demonstration today at Doraha against the Israeli bombing of the Gaza Strip. Com Kartar Singh Bowani–Distt. Secretary CPI addressing the gathering said that the decades-long impunity of the Israeli government, with the passive support of the United States, has allowed its systematic occupation and annexation of Palestinian land since 1967, illegal Israeli settlements, and the blockade of the Gaza Strip and virtual imprisonment of its population. The Israeli government is wrong in justifying its oppression of the Palestinian people as its right to self-defence in the face of Hamas' response to the state of Israel.

Dr Arun Mitra – Asstt. Secretary said that the rockets launched by Hamas represent an indiscriminate attack on the Israeli population, but it is clear that they kill very few Israelis, although they unleash fear and terror. The Israeli military assault has killed no less than 1,600 Palestinian civilians including whole families and innocent children. Israeli bombardment has also destroyed schools and hospitals. The UN head of human rights, Navi Pillay, has called such disproportionate and indiscriminate military action a war crime. Israel is following the 'Dahiya doctrine' where the deliberate and disproportionate use of force to inflict casualties and suffering on the civilian population is to generate terror and achieve the political objective of exerting pressure on Hamas, rather than a military objective. Causing such fear and terror is unequivocally illegal under customary international humanitarian law.  He demanded complete stoppage of this aggression.

Others who addressed include Com Ramesh Rattan, Com Karam Singh, Com Anod,Com Darbara Singh, Com Niranjan Singh, Com Harpal Bowani, Com Gurjit Bhamiri, Com Sukhwinder S Fauji, Com Malkit S Naularhi – Ex Sarpanch, Bibi Manjit Kaur Rampur, Com Gurdev Singh, Com Rajeev Anand, Com Sukhwinder Singh, Com Baljit Singh Thula, Com Hapreet Kaur Bhatal, Com Jaswinder Kaur, Com Kamaljit Kaur, Com Mannu Bowani.

DOD Budget Request Adapts to Fiscal Realities, Hagel Says

Fri, Mar 7, 2014 at 12:32 AM

By Army Sgt. 1st Class Tyrone C. Marshall Jr.

American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Mar. 6, 2014 - The Defense Department's latest budget request is a collaborative proposal that has adjusted to new strategic realities and fiscal constraints for the future, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said here today.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, center, Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, left, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Defense Department Comptroller Robert F. Hale testify on DOD's fiscal year 2015 budget request before the House Armed Services Committee in Washington, D.C., March 6, 2014. DOD photo by Erin A. Kirk-Cuomo

Hagel, joined by Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, testified before the House Armed Services Committee on the department's fiscal year 2015 budget request, calling it a realistic budget to prepare the U.S. military for a dynamic national security landscape.
"I believe this budget is far more than a set of numbers or just a list of decisions," he said. "It is both of those, but it is a statement of values and priorities. It prepares the United States military to defend our national security in a world that is becoming less predictable, more volatile, and in some ways, more threatening to our country and our interests."
The defense secretary said the proposal is a plan that allows the military to meet America's future challenges and threats.
"It matches our resources to our strategy, and it's a product of collaboration," Hagel said. "All of DOD's military [and] civilian leaders were involved in this process." He noted that every level of department leadership had input into the process of forming the budget proposal.
As America ends its second war of the last decade and its longest ever, the secretary said, the budget is not business as usual. "We're all living at a very unusual time," he added. "It may well be, when history records this time, a very defining time."
The nation's leadership has worked through an unprecedented period of fiscal uncertainty and unpredictability over the last 24 months, Hagel said, leading to some "hard choices."
"The longer we defer these difficult decisions," he said, "the more risk we will have down the road forcing our successors to face far more complicated and difficult choices in the future.
"Last year," he continued, "DOD's budget was cut $37 billion because of sequestration on top of the $487 billion, 10-year reduction under the Budget Control Act that DOD was already implementing."
The defense secretary noted while December's Bipartisan Budget Agreement gave DOD some temporary relief, it still imposes more than $75 billion in cuts over the next two years.
"Unless Congress changes the law, sequestration will cut another $50 billion again starting in fiscal year 2016," Hagel said.
The president's five-year plan, he said, provides a realistic alternative to sequestration-level cuts, projecting $115 billion more than current law allows. Hagel said this additional funding is required to implement DOD's updated defense strategy as outlined in the Quadrennial Defense Review.
"As you know, the QDR takes a strategy-driven look at the security landscape over the coming decades," he said. "This QDR is not budget-driven, [nor] is it budget-blind. It builds on the president's defense strategic guidance and is informed by our resource limitations."
The QDR defines the risk assumed under the president's budget request and under sequestration, Hagel said, which is the only realistic way to ensure a useful and relevant strategy.
Hagel said these "are not ordinary times," and the QDR's strategic priorities represent America's highest security interests -- defending the homeland, building security globally, deterring aggression, and being ready and capable to win decisively against any adversary. The president's budget, he added, would allow DOD to execute this strategy with some increased risk in certain areas, which the department has been very clear about.
Hagel said those risks would be reduced if Congress approves the president's Opportunity, Growth and Security Initiative, an additional $26 billion in 2015 to improve readiness and modernization.
"Although our five-year budget plan exceeds sequestration levels, over the past year, DOD has prepared detailed planning for continued sequestration-level cuts," he said. "This showed that a return to sequestration would impose some force structure reductions that simply can't be implemented with the push of a button." These reductions, he added, would require detailed planning and longer time horizons to implement.
"Our five-year defense plan, therefore, hedges and includes the sequestration-level force structure reductions that take longest to plan and to implement," Hagel said, citing the decommissioning of the aircraft carrier USS George Washington, and the Army and Marine Corps end strength cuts below preferred levels.
The defense secretary said DOD leaders agree their preferred force levels can be sustained by the president's budget level and are fully funded in fiscal 2015. Accordingly, he said, he's issued formal guidance to service leaders to find their preferred force levels and not make sequestration-level reductions if they judge that Congress will fund the president's budget levels over the next five years.
"DOD has a responsibility to prepare for all eventualities, just as Congress has a responsibility to provide DOD with some budget predictability," he said.
Hagel also discussed what he called "critical issues," such as the balance between readiness, capability and capacity.
"After more than a decade of long, large stability operations, we traded some capacity to protect readiness and to protect modernization," he said. "We did this as we shift to focus on future requirements shaped by enduring and emerging threats. We have to be able to defeat terrorist threats and deter adversaries with increasingly modern weapons and technological capabilities."
The military also must assure America's economic interests are protected through open sea lanes, freedom of the skies and space, and cyberattacks, which is why the funding for those areas has been protected, Hagel said.
The defense secretary outlined force structure levels and reductions for each military service.
"For the active duty Army, we propose drawing down about 440,000 to 450,000 soldiers," Hagel said. "That's less than 10 percent below its size pre-9/11 [end strength]. I believe this is adequate; our leaders believe it is adequate for future demand. Army National Guard and [Army] Reserve units will remain a vibrant part of our national defense, and will draw down by 5 percent."
The Army's helicopter force structure will be streamlined, reducing the National Guard's fleet by 8 percent and the active Army's fleet by 25 percent, Hagel said, as it moves from a fleet of seven models to four.
"The Navy, for its part, will take 11 ships out of its operational inventory, but they will be modernized and returned to service with greater capability and longer lifespan," the secretary said. "The Marine Corps will continue its planned drawdown to 182,000, but will devote 900 more Marines to increase embassy security. And the Air Force will retire the aging A-10, replacing it with more advanced multi-mission aircraft like the joint strike fighter."
Hagel said the president's defense budget request supports DOD's strategy, defends the country and preserves commitments to the workforce.
"These commitments would be seriously jeopardized by a return to sequestration-level spending," he said. The result would be a military unable to fulfill its defense strategy putting America's traditional role as a guarantor of global security, and its own security at risk, he added.
Dempsey agreed, noting that "the balance between our security demands and our available resources has rarely been more delicate."
"The secretary walked you through the measures we're taking in this budget to try to balance as best we can national security and fiscal responsibilities," Dempsey told the panel of lawmakers.

UNITED SIKHS

Courtroom Victory!
New Policy on Harassment and Non-discrimination in Place.

Highlights

  • UNITED SIKHS advocated for policy amendments after Sikh was asked to remove turban in courtroom.
  • The Pike County Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual now includes the harassment and non-discrimination policy.
  • Civil Rights Complaint was filed with the Department of Justice(DOJ) after which policy was voted into place by Pike County Board of Supervisors. It is applicable to all Pike County employees.
  • A copy of the new policy can be viewed by clicking here.
Pike County, Mississippi- After filing a Civil Rights Complaint with the Department of Justice and persistent advocacy, the Pike County Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual now includes the harassment and non-discrimination policy. UNITED SIKHS welcomes this new policy.
Jagjeet Singh“I was in Mississippi, a place far away from my home in California when the two unfortunate incidents happened- First my arrest for wearing a Kirpan, and later, the shocking incident where I was escorted out of the courtroom by several Highway Patrolmen and asked to remove my turban because the judge didn’t like it. If it were not for UNITED SIKHS timely help, my situation could have become worse. They came to my rescue both times, provided all legal assistance and ensured that my issues were taken care of. I can’t thank them enough. Also, I am extremely happy that their efforts have borne fruit in that a new Harassment and Non-Discrimination policy has been put into place for all Pike County employees. This is a great achievement. I am very happy that no other devout Sikh, Jew, Muslim or person of any other faith who wears religious head covering will have to undergo what I had to in Pike County, Mississippi."
On March 26, 2013, Jagjeet Singh, an amritdhari (initiated) Sikh, appeared for a hearing at the Pike County Justice Court in Magnolia, Mississippi, but was escorted out of the courtroom on the orders of a judge by several highway patrolmen. The patrolmen asked Mr.Singh to either remove his “hat” or not enter the courtroom because the judge didn’t like it. Mr.Singh refused to remove his dastaar (turban).
The events leading to this court hearing were also distasteful. Mr.Singh was initially stopped and detained because his truck had a burst tire, but was arrested for not obeying the officer’s orders to remove his kirpan (small sheathed ceremonial sword). His pleas not to remove, or force him to remove his kirpan and his explanation about its religious importance were ignored. Singh also reports being mistreated and mocked at by the detaining officers.
Our legal team worked together with local counsel in Mississippi who were engaged by UNITED SIKHS to represent Mr.Singh at his court hearing. Our counsel negotiated with the local prosecutor and the arresting officer not to pursue any charges and so, Mr.Singh was released. But what transpired in court that day was shocking- Singh was asked to remove his dastaar (turban). He was in the present situation because he had stood up for his freedom of religion, for his mandated religious practices and he was again put in a similar situation when the judge asked for this dastaar (turban) to be removed.
The efforts and support of local counsel, Ms.LeeAnn Slipher, are much appreciated as she stood up for her client. Slipher became a witness to the incident for the record, and was extremely supportive during Mr.Singh's ordeal in court.
UNITED SIKHS would also like to thank the DOJ Civil Rights Division, especially Mr. Michael Mule’ for handling this matter and for working towards ensuring a positive outcome thus avoiding further discriminatory incidents like these.
You can read the policy here.
“This policy is a step in the right direction and a great achievement not only for Sikhs, but for people of all faiths. It should work to ensure that nobody is discriminated against because of his/her outward religious appearance and genuine religious beliefs,” said UNITED SIKHS’ Staff Attorney Manmeet Singh.
We also extend our gratitude to American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) President Ms. Susan Herman, ACLU Senior Staff Attorney Ms. Heather Weaver, and Legal Director of ACLU Mississippi Ms.Bear Atwood who have been very supportive and are working with us on further matters related to this case.
We encourage you to practice your faith fearlessly. We humbly request you to support us so we can continue to fight for everyone’s right to identity.
