As the old students from the 1985 and 1986 batches of Forestry, College of Agriculture celebrated the alumni reunion; the event saw students from diverse areas coming together for a toast to the old memories and promises of keeping in touch in future.

As a special honour to Real Estate and Mortgage Consultant, Balwinder Singh, who came all the way from Surrey, Canada, to attend the meet, the Communication Centre presented him with PAU souvenirs and other memorabilia. Dr Tejinder Singh Riar, Additional Director of Communication and an ex-student of forestry from the same batch shared the integral role played by PAU in connecting alumni from different batches and backgrounds and fostering a spirit of camaraderie and collaboration.

 In his welcome address, Dr Rishi Indra Singh Gill, Estate Officer, PAU, emphasized strengthening the bond between all ex-students and the need to play a vital role in the prime positioning of the university. The technical session included a discussion about agroforestry followed by a walk on the college campus.

Among those present were ex-students Satnam Singh IFS, Conservator Forest, Parvinder Jamwal, Chief Manager PNB, Mr Baljinder Singh and Gurwinder Singh from MNCs, Mr Tejwant Singh from GNDU Amritsar along with alumni Dr Baljit, Dr Ravinder, Dr GPS Dhillon, Dr Rishi Gill, Dr Ramandeep Singh, working as faculty of PAU.

Dr Jeyaraj D Pandian is the new President Elect of WSO

Dr Jeyaraj D Pandian is the Principal of CMC Ludhiana

Dr Jeyaraj D Pandian, Principal, Christian Medical College, Ludhiana has been selected as the President Elect (2022-2024) and President (2024 to 2026) of World Stroke Organisation (WSO). He is the first Neurologist from Asia to be appointed to this highly influential position. He took over this post on October 28th at the World Stroke Congress which was held in Singapore. Dr Pandian has been in the WSO Board since 2008 and completed 4 years as Vice-President of WSO from 2018.

World Stroke Organisation is the one voice for stroke. The WSO mission is to reduce the global burden of stroke through more effective prevention, better treatment, and long-term support. The headquarters is in Geneva and WSO has more than 3500 members from across the globe. WSO works closely with World Health Organisation (WHO) in influencing health policies related to stroke treatment and prevention. 

Dr Pandian stated that stroke or brain attack is the one of the leading causes of death and disability in India. Each year 1.8 million new stroke cases occur in the country and every 40 seconds one Indian suffers a stroke. One stroke death occurs every 4 minutes in the nation. Stroke is a preventable and treatable disease. High blood pressure is the main cause for stroke. 

Dr Pandian’s vision and mission for the next 4 years is to implement stroke units across India and in Asian and African countries. He has been involved in the development of stroke units in district government and the Medical College hospitals in Punjab since 2016. Recently on November 1st along with WSO and NABH he launched the stroke centre certification program for India in New Delhi. CMC Ludhiana is the first stroke centre in India to go through the assessment process. He said that this will pave way for delivering high quality health care to stroke patients in the country.

Dr Pandian is being involved with WHO Southeast Regional Office New Delhi in implementing stroke care services in Bhutan, Myanmar, Timor Leste, Maldives, Sri Lanka and Nepal. He plans to expand to other WHO Regions in the world.

CMC Ludhiana stroke program is the only center in northwest region to offer highly effective treatment like clot retrieval using stents in blocked arteries (thrombectomy) in the brain. Dr Vivek Aggarwal, Neurointerventionist said that over the last 4 years more than 800 procedures have been done at CMC. He added that the public should be aware about the stroke warning symptoms. Patients present with sudden numbness, paralysis, in one side of the body: sudden trouble speaking, sudden headache, giddiness and unconsciousness. Dr Rajeswar, Associate Professor of Neurology mentioned that patients and relatives should reach CMC quickly to avail the clot bursting injection (0-4.5 hrs) and thrombectomy (0-24hrs). 

Dr Loganathan, Rehabilitation physician at CMC said that a new rehabilitation center has been started last month to cater to the stroke patient’s recovery following a stroke. Dr Dorcas Gandhi, Professor of Physiotherapy mentioned that it is very important for stroke patients to undergo regular physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy which will speed up the recovery process. There are low-cost robotic technology available at CMC Stroke program for rehabilitation of stroke patients. 

Dr William Bhatti, Director, CMCH lauded the achievements of Dr Pandian and his team. He stated that CMC Stroke program has all the modern facilities to treat stroke patients in the region.

Known Poet Sardar Panchhi arrived as the chief guest

Now when selfish people sometimes talk about religion, sometimes about caste and sometimes about language to shine their own politics, in such an environment, Jaspreet Falak and his team are trying to unite everyone sometimes with the pretext of poetry. , sometimes under the pretext of literature and sometimes under the pretext of music. Even so, the real religion of the real writers is to rise above all the differences and join the people in the formula of unity.

This time 'Sawan Kavi Darbar' was organized in Maya Nagar by the organization Kavita Katha Karvan (Reg.), which became very popular. Senior poet and poet Sardar Phansi arrived as the chief guest. On this occasion, Dr. Jaspreet Kaur Falak, founder president of the organization, welcomed the poets and eminent poetry lovers in her well-known memorable style.

The program began with the singing of Saraswati Vandana in the melodious voice of renowned bhajan singer Saroj Verma. After this, the poets presented their poems and ghazals keeping the season of Sawan as the main focus. All these poets showed the yearning of Sawan, the fountain of Sawan and the glimpse of Sawan's creativity in their own words. All these composers captivated the audience with their beautiful ghazals, songs and poems.

Dr. Jaspreet Kaur Falak, Dr. Jagtar Dhiman, Danish Bharti, Dr. Rajinder Sahil, Amritpal Gogia, Hardeep Birdi, Rashmi Asthana, Gurcharan Narang, Navpreet Hari and Dr. Ravinder Singh Chandi displayed their high level of creative talent in this poet court. Performed. 

The stage management was well done by famous poet Danish Bharti. Finally Ms. Rashmi Asthana, Secretary, Kavita Katha Karvan (Registered) presented the vote of thanks. The main attraction of the program was Malpoode and Kheer. All the writers and literature lovers enjoyed the delicious malpoode-kheer and also fulfilled the omen of the month of Shravan.

Beyond affiliation with many hospitals, Dr. Ravinder Seth has been professionally active in many other ways. but he is also known for the promotion of Social and literary events. When he planned to construct his residence oon cloge road of Ludhiana then he found a contractor who was brother of a known writer of that time. Dr. Seth was interested to make a home with literary look and spirit and taste.groeing with the time age and life he started his hospital in Maya Nagar too which is now help, promote and encourge literary events too.

The literary body Kavita Katha Karvaan (Regd) organized a melodious function at the local Conference Hall of Seth Hospital in Maya Nagar wherein eminent and amateur poets welcomed the new year 2022 in verses. 

The Chief Guest of the occasion was Kuldeep Singh Vaid MLA. He exhorted the poets and litterteurs  to use the might of their pens to write forcefully for the betterment of society.  Earlier Sukhwinder Singh Asian Club introduced about the Chief Guest. 

The chairperson of Kavita Katha Karvaan Dr Jaspreet Kaur Falak welcomed the new year in her poetic style and told about the activities of the organization. The poets who participated in the event and recited poems included Trailochan Lochi, Dr Ravinder Singh Chandi, Hardeep Birdi, Ashok Dhir, Sukhwinder Singh Asian Club, Parvat Singh Randhawa, Jimmy Ahmedgarh and Anchal Jindal. They touched different social concerns that are in the face of contemporary society. 

The program started with the welcome remarks by Shelly Wadhwa. The stage was aptly anchored by Dharminder Shahid Khanna. Jasbir Kaur, Balkar Singh, Bakhpreet Singh, Tamanna, Sukhpreet Kaur, Harshdeep Kaur, Jaswinder Kaur, Daljeet Kaur, were among the prominent participants.  Representing the Creative Writers Unit of Kavita Katha Karvaan were Navkamal Singh, Navpreet Singh Harry, Harmeet Poet, who enthralled the audience with their new poems. Harmeet Poet presented a magnificent portrait of Jaspreet Kaur Falak with his signed poem written on it. 

The Kavita Katha Kaarvan Secretary Jasbir Kaur and Dr Ravinder Seth appreciated the way the function was organized. The Chief Guest was presented with a robe of honour and a memento. All participants were  honoured in the occasion.  The program ended with vote of thanks  to all by Dr Jagtar Singh Dhiman.

“Transformational Leadership, from Govt. Programs to Peoples Movement”,  is how Aman Sinha, BJP’s National Spokesperson and senior advocate (Supreme Court Of India) during an interaction at Ludhiana Management Association would like the Narendra Modi Government to be judged. Sinha highlighted the achievements of Modi government in 3.5 years period in terms of ensuring that India remains as one of the fastest growing economy, controlled inflation, reduction of fiscal deficit, high FDI inflows and burgeoning FOREX reserves. He added that these 3.5 years are historic and appreciable.

Sinha also maintained that the government has been able to infuse optimism and hope to the society and this is primarily due to the vision, conviction and courage of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who leads from the front. He also asserted that the nation occupies a strategic position in the global arena, and the nation has also emphatically signalled, that it will neither compromise with terrorism or national sovereignty whatever may be the cost, which is really remarkable. Aman Sinha also shared numbers to validate the efforts put in the areas of rural electrification, ease of doing business and disbursal of loans to entrepreneurs. Sinha also submitted that, this had been achieved only due to the support and enthusiasm of 125 crore Indians who have decided to stand along with the PM as he takes bold initiatives to transform our economy, polity and society.

However Sinha was candid in admitting that there were execution and implementation gaffes during demonetisation and rollout of GST, but perhaps due to the size of our economy and secrecy to be maintained and the gigantic task were not fully factored at the time of decision. He assured that government would deliver on its promise of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas by 2022, and the ensuing election in 2018 would not be a deterrent on the path of bold and transformational decision making.

Members of LMA raised questions about the execution, maintaining that there was a big gap between the policy making and its implementation, and this was resulting in confusion, delays and losses. While the business community supports reforms, they should be calibrated to bring about seamless change,   and not imperil the very existence of business units. Members opined that it is important for the PM and the government to Walk the Talk and also encourage participative leadership.

Prasoon Sharma, South Asia Head , ZTE Soft while interacting with the members, explained how the Government Programs like Start Up India, were facilitating entrepreneurship. He also showcased Nasofilters, a low cost product, developed by IIT graduates for combating Air Pollution in our society.

President LMA Kamal Wadhera while proposing the Vote of Thanks complimented Mr. Aman Sinha on his spirited defense of the Modi Govt. He also hoped that Sinha would share the concerns of citizens and especially those of the business community, as patchy implementation would only lead to confusion, delays, losses and these would deter economic growth, which is the prime agenda of the government.

The results of first ever youth contest in the state by Punjab Agricultural University on suicide prevention were announced here today. Dr. Gurinder Kaur Sangha, Dean, College of Basic Science & Humanities, PAU disclosed that there were a total of 873 entries in essay, story, poetry, slogan and poster contest. About 68 institutions spread across 19 districts of the state participated. A panel of 16 eminent judges including stalwarts in the respective fields judged all the entries. She stated that the initiative was held to sensitise and mobilise the society for suicide prevention interventions.

Govt. College for Girls, Ludhiana organized an installation ceremony of  the  Red Cross Society in collaboration with Anti Drug Society . Prof. (Dr.) Mohinder Kaur Grewal, Principal of the college was the Chief Guest on the occasion. The principal was given floral welcome by Mrs. Kiranjit Kaur Brar, Miss Satveer Kaur, Mrs. Gurwinder Kaur and Mrs. Rosy Nagpal. While addressing the students, the hon'ble chief guest shared her words of wisdom and enlightenment with the students. Badges were given to all the office bearers and executive members of the society by the chief guests as a form of blessings and best wishes for future responsibilities. A PowerPoint presentation was presented by the students followed by delightful Punjabi song and cultural performance. At the end of the ceremony Prof.(Dr.) Mohinder Kaur Grewal gave her blessings and precious remarks. The ceremony, thus came to an end by Student in charge Red Cross Society, Gurleen Kaur giving a vote of thanks.

We shared the success story of Punarjot eye donation movement of Punjab at let's talk cornea national conference of CAMBA cornea Andhatav mukt Bharat Abhiyan under the aegis of Saksham NGO of  Madhav netripedhi of Nagpur for blindness free India campaign at Manekshaw convention center, Delhi Cantonment.

 

In power presentation, A struggle story of Punarjot eye donation, collection of highest collection of donated eyes in NGO sector, providing free corneal transplantation to all, free training of eye banking staff, was appreciated by corneal surgeons and eye banking social personalities from all northern states of India  and  it will help in movement of corneal blindness backlog free India campaign l.

Global Warming, A Serious concern: Dr. Khush

Father of Rice Revolution Addresses media at PAU

The Father of Rice Revolution and an alumnus of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Dr Gurdev Singh Khush voiced concern over global warming and changing weather pattern while addressing the media at PAU today. He stressed on combating the climate change issues, reducing area under rice, cultivating crops requiring less water and promoting crop diversification technology in Punjab. Replying to the query of zinc and iron in rice, he suggested the application of biotechnological tools in this direction.

Dr Khush, who has come from USA, is on a visit to PAU to attend the annual function of ‘Dr Gurdev Singh Khush Foundation for Advancement of Agricultural Sciences’ in the University on January 31. During the press conference, Dr G.S. Kalkat, Chairman, Punjab State Farmers’ Commission; Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice Chancellor, PAU; and Dr B.S. Dr D.S. Brar, Secretary of the Foundation, while giving a brief introduction of Dr Khush, said, “Dr Khush is a main architect of Green Revolution in rice.  Nearly 35 rice varieties developed by him are being cultivated across the world.” Dr Brar further said, “Dr Khush is a well-known rice breeder and a brilliant scientist, who has trained numerous scientists from diverse countries. A recipient of Japan Prize (1987) and World Food Prize (1996), he has been honoured with doctorate degree by several national and international varsities.”

Highlighting the activities of Khush Foundation, Dr Brar said that it was established in 2010 with generous donation of Rs 3.5. crore from Dr Khush with a mandate to promote agricultural research and development programmes of PAU. The Foundation has four major objectives including award of scholarships to undergraduate students of PAU and GADVASU, award of travel grants to postgraduate students and young faculty of PAU, team award for excellence in transfer of technology to farmers and holding of a guest lecture by a renowned agricultural scientist. Till date, many students, teachers, Krishi Vigyan Kendras and Farm Advisory Service Centres in Punjab have been awarded by Khush Foundation, he told. Dr Brar disclosed, “The Foundation is all set to start financial support for needy students also who are deserving candidates.

           Dr Dhillon, PAU VC, said the three PAU developed rice varieties PR 121, PR 124 and PR 126 have been well-accepted by the farmers of the state. “Last year, about 50 per cent of rice area of the state was under PR 121 variety, which showed excellent results at farmers’ fields,” he told. The University is focusing on conservation of natural resources, he said, while adding that the untiring efforts of scientists have also resulted in the reduced pesticide consumption in the state.  For more pics please click here

An ‘Integrated Beekeeping Development Centre (IBDC)’ was inaugurated at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today by Sh Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs, Government of India. Sh Vijay Sampla, Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, also graced the occasion as guest of honour. Sh Meghwal said, “Punjab is known for Green Revolution and agricultural development.” The Central Government is making all out efforts to double the income of the farmers as well as agriculture related entrepreneurs by 2022, he added. Further, he discussed the problems of the beekeepers and assured them of full support in resolving their issues.

Sh Sampla said, “Although honey production in high in India, yet its usage is more in foreign countries.” He said the establishment of this Centre at PAU would help in enhancing the income of the farmers, keeping the environment pollution free, and improving the quality of honey. Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice-Chancellor, PAU, expressed his sincere gratitude to the Central Government as well as State Government for starting number of schemes for sustaining food security and recognizing significant contributions of PAU in promoting beekeeping as a profitable subsidiary occupation. “Punjab is a leading state in honey production,” he said, while disclosing that the state is producing 39.5 per cent of honey of the country, which is being exported to 48 countries.” “There is a progress in the income of the farmers, but thrust needs to be laid on increasing profits,” he observed. The Integrated Beekeeping Development Centre at PAU would go a long way in giving additional benefits to the farmers, he added. Dr S.K. Malhothra, Horticulture Commissioner, Government of India, said that pollination improvement in beekeeping would lead to increased honey production. He lauded All India Coordinated Research Project on Beekeeping at PAU and said that seeing its good work, the Central Government decided to set-up this Centre in the University. Dr Gurkanwal Singh, Director of Horticulture, Punjab, said that along with honey production, focus was being laid on developing high value bee products. He urged the Central Government to exempt beekeeping from GST. He also referred to the introduction of ‘apitherapy,’ a source of income generation as well as beneficial for public health.

Every year Christian Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana and the Dr. L H Lobo Memorial trust Ludhiana conducts an annual oration in memory of late Dr. L.H. Lobo, the first Indian Principal of CMC Ludhiana.

This year Padma Shree Prof. Kamal K Sethi, Past President of Cardiology Society of India and currently Chairman and Director of Cardiology at Delhi Heart and Lung Institute will be delivering the 34^th Dr. L H Lobo Memorial Oration on "Current blood pressure goals in treating hypertension"on 8^th October 2016.

A scientific symposium on ‘Recent Advances in Cardiology’ will be held following the oration. Prof. Pramesh Kovoor, Director Cardiac Services, Westmead Hospital, Sydney, Australia will be delivering the keynote address during the symposium.

Dr. Rajneesh Calton, Professor & Head, Department of Cardiology informed that eminent experts with extensive experience will be discussing advancements in treatment and prevention of heart diseases.

The 70th Independence Day was celebrated at Christian Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana with patriotic spirit.  The Program started with thanks giving service for the country at the College Chapel, followed by Flag hoisting, March past and cultural events. The Chief Guest, Mr. Gulshan Rai , Chief Environmental Engineer, Punjab Pollution Control Board, Ludhiana,  was welcomed  by Dr. Abraham G. Thomas, Director, CMC. Dr. Bobby John, Principal, Christian Medical College introduced the Chief Guest. Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Guest Mr. Gulshan Rai emphasized the need for individual efforts to help preserve the environment.  

The presence of the Administrative team, staff and students marked the occasion.  At this occasion five students who saved the life of their class mate recently at an accident in the city were acknowledged and honored.  Patriotic songs, dances and a skit were presented by the students of five colleges of CMC i.e. Medical, Dental, Nursing, Physiotherapy and IAHS (Institute of Allied Health Sciences).  The Vice-Principal, Student Activities Dr. Gagandeep Kwatra thanked everyone for the help extended.

Fortis Hospital Ludhiana organised Cancer awareness programme” Khushi ke Pal with apne Doctors on 11th August @ Park Plaza under the supervision of Mr. Vivan Singh Gill, Director, Fortis Hospital Ludhiana. More than 100 people attended the programme. Welcome note was given by Mr. Gill. He said “There are at least 90 cancer patients for every 100,000 population in Punjab. Cancer incidence in the state is higher than the national average of 80 per 100,000 population, reveals a survey by the Punjab government. The survey results were released on January 28”.

Giving information Dr. J.S Sekhon, Director Oncosciences said, “Though several studies in the past decade have shown that Punjab has higher incidence of cancer than the rest of the country, this is for the first time the state government conducted a comprehensive door-to-door survey to quantify the problem. The survey, which also aimed at carrying out mass awareness campaign and early detection of cancer based on warning signs and symptoms, screened about 265,000 people in the Malwa, Doaba and Majha regions. It was found that about 24,000 of them were suffering from cancer. Worse, more than thrice the number—84,453—were suspected to be suffering from the deadly disease.

To accomplish this huge task of cancer treatment Fortis Hospital Ludhiana has emerged as a major hub for cancer awareness, Screening and treatment. Dr. Parveen Kaur, Senior Consultant Radiation Oncology said, “With increasing incidence of cancer the clinical management of cancer continues to be a challenge for the 21st century. Radiation therapy remains an important component of cancer treatment with approximately 50% of all cancer patients receiving radiation therapy during their course of illness; it contributes towards 40% of curative treatment for cancer. The main goal of radiation therapy is to deprive cancer cells of their multiplication (cell division) potential.”

Speaking on the occasion, the participant appreciated the effort put in by Fortis Hospital in taking care of their patients. Musical Chair, Antakshri and many more were also organized on this occasion.

Premier Investiture Ceremony at Police DAV Public School

Police DAV Public School organized the Premier Investiture Ceremony on Friday, May 6, 2016 to set up the four houses christened as Aviral, Ajay, Abhay and Agrim house . A special assembly was organized to designate the students with the title of Captains and Vice-Captains. IPS Mr Dhruv Dhaiya, ADCP (HQR) was the guest of honour for the day. 

Harman, Lovepreet Singh, Bhupesh and Hassanpreet were elected as the Captains and Vinod, Ajay, Vagish and Divij were elected as the Vice-Captains of the four houses respectively. The Oath Taking Ceremony was under taken by the Captains and Vice Captains in which they pledged to perform their duties faithfully and diligently. They were given formal badges by the Chief guest. IPS, Mr Dhruv Dhaiya, ADCP(HQR) congratulated the students and the staff members for the prestigious moment. He said that the rationale behind the  set-up of houses in the school is to promote healthy competition amongst the students. It will also develop healthy style of leadership which is vital in ones professional and personal life.
