Don't give free bees to the medical professionals--PMC

Thu, May 7, 2015 at 10:06 AM
Ethical practices by firms to guarantee cost cutting in prices

Ludhiana: 7 May 2015: (Punjab Screen Bureau):
Ethical practices by the Pharmaceutical industry can lead to substantial reduction in prices of drugs. The uniform code of pharmaceutical medical practices (UCPMP) of the Ministry of Chemicals and Petrochemicals prohibits the Pharma industry as per clause no. 6 and 7 of the code not to give free bees to the medical professionals in the form of travel grants or gifts. In fact each company spends substantial amount on these things. Dr G S Grewal  President PMC informed that the  MCI is already seized with this matter and has initiated action to stop the medical professionals from receiving such benefits from the Pharma companies as these add to the cost of medicines. But it is the duty primarily of the Pharma companies to ensure cost cutting of the drug prices. In fact nearly 67% of the out of pocket expenditure on health by goes on bearing the cost of medicines. Because of out of pocket expenditure on health nearly 4 crore people of our country are pushed below poverty line. There is thus urgent need to act on this matter.  DrArunMitra Chairman Ethical Committee - A of the Punjab Medical Council informed that the PMC has written to the Secretary of the Ministry of Chemicals and Petrochemicals to seek guidance in this regard as the companies do not fall directly under the purview of the medical council. But if the companies are made to stop free bees then they have to be made to ensure the prices of medicines also are slashed accordingly so that the benefit goes to the patients.

Nationalize Transport in Punjab for the safety of Passengers

Wed, May 6, 2015 at 4:44 PM
Four left parties held a massive demonstration in all districts
Ludhiana: 7 May 2015: (Punjab Screen Bureau):
In context of the Orbit bus episode in Moga where a young teen age girl was first molested and then killed by throwing her out of the running bus by the staff and some hired goons of the Orbit company, the left parties have demanded that the public transport in Punjab should be nationalized immediately. In a rally organised by the CPI, CPI (M), CPM Punjab and CPI (ML) Liberation at the interstate bus stand after holding a protest march from the Chattar Singh Park, various speakers while condemning this incident said that this is part of the mafiaism of the Badal Parivar which is apparent from the sale of drugs, sand, land, liquor and electronic media in addition to transport.
The way the poor family of the girl has been pressurized and the whole case handled has exposed the nexus between Badals, criminals, administration and the police. It is well known to everyone that the private bus companies not only evade tax but also flout the rules and regulations. They use pressure horns with impunity, paint the window glasses with black color, use curtains in the buses and play dirty loud music and films in the buses. They even employ untrained and tainted personnel as their staff who misbehave with the passengers.
No official can dare challan them on these grounds. They even beat the government run transport staff. All the prime time routes have been controlled by the Orbit and Jujhar companies. This has virtually ousted the government transport as well as the small entrepreneurs from the transport business. Because of sand mafia the construction activity has come down leaving large number of labourers jobless. The speakers addressing the rally said that our neighbouring states have nationalized transports which gives substantial revenue to the government. The situation of law and order is so grave that even the upright police officers have not been spared of the wrath of the goons with the backing of the Badal Parivar as we have seen in the incidents of attack on AIG in Ludhiana, ASI in Amritsar and Head Constable in Jalandhar. At the end effigy of Badal government was burnt.

Those who addressed the rally include Dr Arun Mitra, Com D P Maur, Com Sukhminder Sekhon, Com Amarjit Mattu, Com Paramjit Singh, Com Ramesh Rattan, Com Jagdishchand, Com Jatinder Pal Singh, Com Gurnam Gill, Com Gurnam Sidhu, Gulzar Goria, O P Mehta, Devraj.

First IMA General Body meet after election

Tue, Apr 7, 2015 at 3:09 PM

The meeting was followed by an academic session

Ludhiana: 7 April 2015: (Punjab Screen Bureau):

After the hectic IMA Ludhiana election activity last month the new team of executive members took charge in a well attended General Body Meeting on 6th April at the IMA House auditorium. The always calm and smiling Dr. Ajit Singh Chawla welcomed the members. The din of elections being over the doctors sat together to discuss various issues concerning the fraternity and welfare of the patients and the society.

The meeting was followed by an academic session where Dr. Ajit Sood and Dr Pradeep Kapoor updated the doctors about Hepatitis C and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Dr Sood of Dayanand Medical College informed that hepatitis C, a viral infection usually transmitted by blood is becoming more rampant and high risk patients include intravenous drug users, men and women receiving blood transfusions or dialysis, patients with an impaired immune system such as HIV patients and individuals who received tattoos with non steriled equipment. Additionally, the disease may be seen in health care workers who were exposed to the virus as part of their duty during service to patients. There is a clear cut change in the protocol to test and treat hepatitis C patients. It is important to detect the disease early because the virus can lead to chronic liver disease, liver failure and liver cancer – all of which can be prevented with the treatments now available.

Another important topic discussed was heart disease in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) patients. Emerging evidence shows that the lung disease is more in smokers and is linked with increased heart disease. The heart disease is often overlooked and may be difficult to detect as both cause breathlessness. An alert doctor can detect it early, said Dr Pardeep Kapoor, a senior consultant and Head of Chest Disease department of Mohandai Oswal Hospital. Many large scale studies solidify the link between COPD and cardiovascular disease, and studies indicate the efficacy of inhaled steroids and other drugs in treating COPD and reducing cardiovascular risk.
Dr P. S. Jassal, Secretary of IMA Ludhiana said IMA will strive to advance health and as part of our mission, we are committed to provide regular Continuing Medical Education (CME) events for doctors of the city. These events aim to provide the latest and relevant clinical updates practical for patient care. The meeting was attended by Dr. Manoj Sobti, Dr. Kulwant Singh, Dr Sanjeev Uppal, Dr Sadana, Dr Batra, Dr Sibia and others.
