Bhai Gurbax Singh Khalsa's Struggle

Tue, Jan 28, 2014 at 1:44 PM
....And our so called ‘panthic leaders’  --Dr Gurnam Singh, UK.
Following a 42 day hunger strike demanding release of six prisoners who had already completed their jail terms after being convicted in connection with the assassination of former chief minister Beant Singh’s in 1995, former detainee Bhai Gurbax Singh Khalsa from Haryana submitted himself to an edict of Akal Takht head Gurbachan Singh asking Gurbax to end his fast. Giving personal commitments to approach the chief Minister of Panjab, Sardar Parkash Singh Badal, the Jathedar impressed upon Gurbaksh to give panthic leaders an opportunity of secure the permanent release of the 6 political prisoners.
The six prisoners in question include Bhai, Lal Singh, who was lodged in Patiala's Nabha jail, Bhai Waryam Singh lodged in a Uttar Pardesh jail in a different case, Gurdeep Singh, lodged in a Karnataka jail in a TADA case and Gurmeet Singh, Lakhwinder Singh and Shamsher Singh who were all are lodged in Burail jail at Chandigarh after their life conviction in the Beant Singh assassination case.

However, the Sikh Organisation of Prisoners Welfare (SOPW), a charity supporting these and other detainees, recently announced Gurmeet Singh had been ordered to return to Burail Jail. Both Gurmeet and his family were reported as ‘being distrust’. For Gurmeet and his family the past month has ‘been something of a rollercoaster ride: from the ecstatic feeling of being reunited with his family after eighteen years, to returning home for the first time since he lost his father, to the heartbreaking moment when he had to say goodbye to the short lived freedom he had tasted’.

Given the inability of the Jathedars to keep their promise to take actions to ensure the permanent release of the six prisoners released on payroll, the SOPW issues a warning. ‘Over the last couple of months, many promises have been made, many people have made a name for themselves, many photo’s have been taken and many Sikh’s emotions have been played with. However, none of the leaders, ruling parties, religious bodies or influential people have carried out their promises. When the tv camera’s and media people packed up and left Gurdwara Amb Sahib in Mohali, our so called leaders returned to their own worlds where they neither hear, nor say, nor do.’

Bhai Gurbax Singh was/is a very sincere and inspirational gurumukh. However, I have to say many of the hangers on who posed for pictures with him really have little concern for, justice, political prisoners or the Khalsa Panth. The Sant Samaj in particular are Badal's poodles and they will not do anything that he or the corrupt political class do not sanction. The reality is that our dharam is gulam; on the one hand we have the likes of K.P.S Gill, Sumedh Singh Saini, K.S Brar and Congress and BJP politicians who will gladly kill ordinary Guru Sikhs. And on the other we have the 1000's of Masands and Baba's - and I include those that claim to be Panthic - who say one thing but do another.

Their true colours were recently exposed during the clashes at Patna Sahib - go against their command or desire and the serene sant quickly turns into a gunda. Look at what happens when any big baba passes away; even before the Baba has had his antam ardass the chelas begin to square up to each other and civil war ensues, each vying for the 'gadhi'. This is also why for every samparda, there are many factions and pretenders claiming to be the true custodians of the dynasty. And, like gangsters and criminal politicians, the baba's have their own personal militia's brandishing automatic weapons. Why if they are one with waheguru do they fear death? If they have such spiritual powers (Brahm Gian) why would anybody want to attack them? Of course the reality is that they fear attacks from the other gangster Baba's often over land and monetary disputes. Or in the case of Nihangs, they operate protection rackets.

Sant Jarnail Singh ji had very little time for these pakandhis. He was a man of ordinary people of al faiths and none. He was not interested in personal possessions or fame. His power was in his simple devotion to the pure teachings and example of our Guru's, which was to live a spiritual, frugal life but also to fight oppression. That is why the Masands, Baba's and Corrupt Akali Politicians conspired to kill him. The same forces, had the eye of the media not been there, that would have disposed of Bhai Gurbax Singh. Indeed, Bhai Gurbax Singh in his discourses at Ambh Sahib often referred to these fifth columnists in the Sangat - he would say there are peole here who have come to support me but there are also those that want to kill him.

They have little regard for Sikhi and all they can offer is ritualised practices - smagams to fill their coffers and keep the masses from realising the true causes of their misery. Yes, most of their chelas are people suffering from various physical, mental or economic troubles. And instead of seeking out professional support, which they probably can't afford, they go for the cheap Baba version. And as far as economic problems are concerned, rather than gamble their money on the promises of some Baba's ardas (equivalent of a bookie), they should really be asking why they are in poverty? And the answer is simple; it is the system and not waheguru. It is the greed of the rulers and their resident baba's. And once this is realised, then it becomes obvious, the only solution is to create common cause with other poor people to overthrow the system. And we have many examples from the Gurus pointing us tpowards such a strategy. For example, read Rattan Singh Banghu who said "gareeb ka mooh, guru ki golak". The sakhi of Guru nanak Ji and Bhai Lalo provides another examination.

And so as doubt and pessimism seems to be replacing the euphoria and optimism surrounding ending of Bhai Gurbax Singh Khalsa’s hunder strike, people that have a genuine concern for justice for prisoners who made huge sacrifices to confront the fascist dictatorship in Panjab during the decade after 1984 resulting in the death of 1000’s of innocent people, Sikh and non-Sikh at the hands of state terrorism, need to think carefully. Today, there is a need for a new leadership of which Gurbax Singh Khalsa in one shining example. This is a leadership whose hall mark is justice, equality and inclusivity. It is a leadership that is opposed to sectarianism and is seeking to confront all those that do and have abused power, not least the many so called jathedars and Sants that demand loyalty of the Sikh masses without reciprocating that very same loyalty.

Grewal lashed out at Punjab State Power Corporation Limited

Tue, Jan 28, 2014 at 4:29 PM
Several business houses are keen to invest in Punjab
Now we have to check PSPCL for providing poor services
Ludhiana : 28 Jan 2014: (Rector Kathuria//Punjab Screen):
National BJP Leader and Punjab Small Industry and Export Corporation (PSIEC) Former Vice Chairman, Advocate Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal said that our SAD-BJP Government has made several efforts to boost the industrial sector in Punjab state. Grewal said that due to these efforts of SAD-BJP Government as result several business houses are keen to invest in our Punjab. He said that now we have to check Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) which is providing poor services to the Consumers in Punjab. Talking with the Media persons here today Grewal lashed out at Punjab State Power Corporation Limited for poor consumer services and absolute non-adherence of Standards of  Performance mandated by Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission (PSERC)  appointed by Government of Punjab. Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission (PSERC) has specified critical distribution parameters to provide efficient, reliable and safe system of Electricity through its regulations provided in its Supply Code. These Minimum Standards of Performance provides strict timelines to resolve various Consumer grievances viz. Normal Fuse Off, Overhead Line Breakdowns, Underground Cable Breakdowns, Distribution Transformer Failure, Power Transformer Failure, Street Light Faults, Period of Scheduled Outage, Voltage Fluctuations, Meter Complaints, Release of New Connection, Transfer of Title or Conversion of Services, Shifting of Meter/Service Connection and other Services, Complaints about Consumer’s Bills and restoration of Supply.
Grewal stated that Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission ( PSERC ) mandates a compensation to the Consumer in case of non-fulfillment of these Minimum Standards of Performance. Compensation varies from Rs 50/- to Rs 5000/- for each default for each Consumer. It is well known that Punjab State Power Corporation Limited neither fulfils these Minimum Standard of performance ( MSOP ) nor compensates any Consumer towards any such lapse whereas Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission ( PSERC ) mandates payment of such compensation by the way of adjustment in Electricity Bills. For instance, Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission ( PSERC ) mandates a normal fuse off complaint shall be addressed within 4 hours in cities, towns and urban areas and in case Punjab State Power Corporation Limited ( PSPCL ) fails to resolve the complaint within 4 hours, it shall remit Rs 50/- as compensation by the way of adjustment in the next bill of the Consumer.
Grewal added that Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission ( PSERC ) mandates registration of each and every complaint filed by the Consumer verbally, telephonically or in writing as per a duly approved Consumer Complaint Handling Procedure whereas there is hardly any such effective system in place to register and address consumer complaints. “According to the Annual Revenue Requirement ( ARR ) filed by the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited ( PSPCL ) with the Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission ( PSERC ), it received only 2462 complaints in a year from over 65 Lac Consumers across Punjab whereas on an average more than 10000 complaints are received daily by the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited which clearly means Punjab State Power Corporation Limited ( PSPCL ) had fudged Annual Revenue Requirement ( ARR ) figures to avoid compensation and save itself from the wrath of Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission ( PSERC ) ”, added Grewal.
Grewal stated that he will write to Shri Shanta Kumar MP ( Rajya Sabha ) Prabhari Punjab Pradesh,  Shri Shyam Jhaju National BJP Secretary and Seh-Prabhari Punjab, Sr Sukhbir Singh Badal President Shiromani Akali Dal ( SAD ), Deputy Chief Minister and Power Minister Punjab, Shri Kamal Sharma Punjab State President Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP ), Shri Tikshan Sud Political Advisor to CM Punjab and also to Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission ( PSERC ) to pass strict instructions to Punjab State Power Corporation Limited ( PSPCL ) to ensure registration of each and every complaint and its quick resolution, adhere to the Minimum Standard of performance ( MSOP ) as mandated by Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission ( PSERC ) and  compensate each and every Consumer in case of any failure on its part.

It is a day care surgery
Dr. Sarvpreet Singh Grewal, Prof. & Head, Deptt. of Neurosurgery, Dr. Harman Sobti, Neurosurgeon at CMC & H along with patient Baldev Singh from Fatehgarh Sahib.
The second photo is of the incision on the back of the patient
Ludhiana, 28th Jan, 2014 (Shalu Arora and Rector Kathuria):
Back pain & leg  pain are the two most common reasons of a patient for referral to spine specialties today. The most common diagnosis in such a patient is extruded disc. Not all of the patients with back pain require a surgical intervention, surgery may be necessary in some patients. Out of those requiring surgery many patients do not avail it with the fear of instability. To overcome this, the department of Neurosurgery at Christian Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana under the stewardship of Prof. Sarvpreet Singh Grewal has started Key Hole Spine Surgery. In this procedure there is very minimal tissue cutting & no muscle and bone cutting. It is done under general anaethesia using an endoscope/microscope with a small one inch incision on the back. Dr. Sarvpreet Singh Grewal, Professor and Head, Department of Neurosurgery at Christian Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana told media persons that the advantage of this surgery is that there is minimal post –operative pain & the patient is walking the same evening. He also said that it is a day care surgery as the patient is discharged same day, free from his pain.

Dr. Sarvpreet Singh Grewal has performed many such surgeries. In the last week, two patients with an extruded lumbar disc were operated by him with this technique. The first was a young 26 years old, volleyball player from Fatehgarh Sahib, who came to him with an extremely intolerable back radiating down to his right leg. Due to this he was unable to carry on his daily activities & become almost bed ridden. Dr. Sarvpreet Singh Grewal & his team at CMC & Hospital, Ludhiana did a minimal invasive spine surgery and the extruded disc which was compressing the nerve root was removed with the microscope. Dr. Harman Sobti, Neurosurgeon at CMC & Hospital Ludhiana, who was also present along with Dr. Grewal in the surgery told that the patient become pain free immediately after surgery & was able to carry on his normal lifestyle the next day after surgery.

Similarly, Dr. Sarvpreet Singh Grewal & Dr. Harman Sobti, also operated another 68 year old male patient few days back who came with back pain, radiating to his left leg. Dr. Harman Sobti said that he too had an extruded lumbar disc compressing his nerve root which was removed by the same technique & the patient became pain free immediately after surgery after which he was discharged walking the next day.

Dr. Sarvpreet Singh Grewal told the media that the department of Neurosurgery has started Specialized Spine OPD on Mondays & Fridays from 9am to 1pm for patients with spine problems.

Ludhiana: (CPI) and CPI(M) held a protest march

Sat, Jan 25, 2014 at 3:08 PM
Even the police personnel are not safe in Punjab
Ludhiana: 25 Jan 2014: (Rector Kathuria//Punjab Screen):
The Communist Party of India (CPI) and  CPI(M) held a protest march against the rise in prices of essential commodities including the LPG Petrol, deteriorating law and order situation and other anti people policies of the state government, consolidation of land and sand mafia, criminal activities of drug mafia and increase in the petty crime. The parties held rally at the railway station and then marched to the Clock Tower Chowk. Speaking on the occasion various speakers said that even the police personnel are not safe as proved by the killing of an ASI trying to save the honour of his daughter by a member of the Akali Dal. The incident of violence at the mini secretariat is also another evidence. The law and order situation has deteriorated to the lowest ebb ever in the recent period. All sections of the people particularly the women have never felt them so unsafe as today. The unwarranted behaviour with the struggling teachers is highly condemnable the speakers said. There is political interference in the functioning of the police. Land Mafia and Sand Mafia as well as the drug peddlers are active without any fear. The speakers also lambasted the government for imposing taxes to the tune of Rs. 9000 crores on the people of Punjab in form of property tax, increase in bus fare, registration of vehicle rates increase, enhancement of rate of Intqal and TS 1, electricity tariff etc. The tax on petrol is also maximum in Punjab. Not only that the employees are not being paid salaries on time. Even the pension is not being disbursed. Over and above increase in the prices of LPG have completely imbalanced the ordinary family. Large number of people have not got the subsidies. They are even finding it difficult to get Aadhar cards. People have to wait in long queues for this and then run around in the banks. Policies of both state and central governments have robbed the people. Those who addressed the gathering include Com Vijay Mishra- Member State Committee CPM, Com Kartar Singh Bowani- Secretary CPI Ludhiana, Com Sukhminder Singh Sekhon- Member state committee CPI (M), Com Gulzar Gorea, Com O  P Mehta,  Com D P Maur, Com Jatinder Pal , Com Jagdish, Com Ramesh Rattan, Com Amarjeet Mattu- Distt. Tewari demands immediate release of salaries to PAU staff

Wed, Jan 22, 2014 at 6:17 PM
Pb. Govt. must ensure an assured fund for the PAU
LUDHIANA:January 2,2014: (Rector Kathuria//Satpal Soni//Punjab Screen):
Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari today demanded immediate release of the salaries of the employees of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), who include scientists, teachers and other non-teaching staff. He regretted that the staff had to struggle to get their monthly salaries as a result of criminal and callous indifference of the Akali-BJP government towards them.
In a statement issued here today, the Union Minister, who represents Ludhiana in the Lok Sabha, said, given the importance of the institution towards the agricultural development of the state, the Punjab government must ensure an assured fund for the PAU so that the staff there does not suffer.
He said, it has become a routine for several years now that the PAU employees’ salaries get delayed in the last quarter of every financial year and still the government has not devised any mechanism to ensure that the practice does not get repeated.
Tewari said, it reflected very badly on the fiscal management of the Akali-BJP government in the state that the scientists and professors who should otherwise be working in fields, laboratories and classrooms, which they are doing in any case against all odds and despite their salaries getting delayed, are forced to sit on dharna for what should come to them as their rightful due.
The Minister maintained that while all the educational and research institutions are of paramount importance, the PAU holds special place since it has not only scripted the Green Revolution in the country but also sustained it. “It is an irony that when the Punjab government is claiming to improve the agriculture economy it is treating PAU so step-motherly”, the minister said, while seeking the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s personal attention to this pressing issue.
While assuring that he will try whatever he can at the government of India level, Tewari said, a few years ago he had managed to get a one-time special grant of Rs 100 crores for the PAU, he will again try to get some more grants. However, he added, it is actually the state government that has to ensure that the PAU does not suffer for want of grants as the institution comes under the state government only.

ESSO - Providing Scientific and Technical Support

21-January-2014 16:03 IST
A Special Feature on Earth Sciences                 Happy Republic Day 2014By all measures, 2013-14 has been the most challenging, eventful and productive years for various endeavors of the Earth System Science Organization (ESSO) in the recent past.  One of the important milestones accomplished during year is commencement of full-fledged operations at the 3rd Antarctic Station “ Bharati”.  India has been accorded observed status in
the Arctic Council in recognition of India’s scientific contribution and endeavour in Polar research.  During the year, the country witnessed a number of natural disasters such as tropical cyclones Thane, Phailin, and Helen and extreme events like landslides in Uttarakhand and floods in Andhra, Gujarat due to intense precipitations, and earthquakes besides strongest southwest monsoon of the recent years. It was a daunting task to issue timely and reliable information on rainfall, winds, storm surges, high waves which have been successfully performed. This has received an overwhelming appreciation from a wide range user community.  The improvement in forecasting of various events has been accomplished primarily due to coordinated effort of all the entities of ESSO and strengthening of observations networks of ocean and atmospheric sectors, assimilation of data, implementation of high resolution global and regional ocean atmospheric models.  The high performance computing system has been upgraded from the existing 70 Teraflop to storage archival capacity of one Petabyte, which is ranked at 36th position in the world’s top 500 and first in the country.  The Agro-Meterelogical advisories have been extended to all the 600 districts of the country and sub-district services are being done on pilot scale in selected districts. Currently, over 4.2 million farmers have subscribed to the agro-advisory services. For the first time in India, an indigenous climate model has been employed for studying variability and predictability of monsoon on seasonal, interannual and decadal time scale. The long range forecast for the season (June-September) rainfall for the country as a whole was 104-108% against actual rainfall of 106% of LPA for the year 2013.

With regard to ocean mineral survey and exploration, the work was productive. A series of seven major research cruises of 30 days each have been conducted in the central Indian Ocean Basin for acquisition of marine geophysical data, where the newly developed deep-see mining technologies were tested and made operational on experimental basis. These include testing of ROSUB at the mining site for exploitation of hydrothermal sulfides, which transmitted real-time data from the Indian Ridge in the Indian Ocean to oversee monitoring the operations from Chennai.  India’s filed the application for allotment of a site for exploration of Polymetallic Sulphides in the Indian Ocean during meeting of the International Seabed Authority, Kingston, Jamaica, held from 8-19 July 2013. Towards providing improved earthquake information, a set of 75 Broadband seismic and GPS receivers have been established. The state of the art Indian tsunami early warning system is now capable of issue advisories on tsunamis occurred not only due to earthquakes anywhere in the Indian Ocean but also landslides as demonstrated during the recent Pakistan earthquake.   As per India’s commitment to the UNESCO, the International Training Centre of Operational Oceanography was established and made operational for promotion of capacity building and training activities for the countries of the Indian Ocean Region. Under the outreach programs, the ESSO had organized Earth Science Olympaid in September 2013.  The economic benefits of various services being rendered by ESSO across the sectors are well recognized, which contributes sustainably to the GDP. Lastly, the ESSO’s participation of various activities emerged from the Result Framework Document effort. Viz., preparation of Action Plans for ISO 9001:2008, and effort should be made for improve Innovations and Citizen’s charters have been rated as one of the best. The evaluation of performance of the RFD of ESSO has secured 94% consistently for the 3rd year.

Sat, Jan 18, 2014 at 5:19 PM
Convention was  attended by over 200 persons
Ludhiana: 18 Jan 2014: (Rector Kathuria//Punjab screen):
Women must come forward to know their rights and to get them implemented in various spheres of life whether they are working in education, health, law, banking, agriculture, domestic or any other sector. They must involve more and more in socio political activities and assert to be in the decision making bodies. This is essential to check rise in the crime against women. This was said by Ms Amarjeet Kaur national convener AIWWF and national secretary AITUC while giving Keynote address at the convention on ROLE OF WOMEN IN DEVELOPMENT AND DECISION MAKING-CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES organised jointly by the Pragatisheel Lekhak Sangh, Punjab Istri Sabha and All India Working Women Forum –AITUC Ludhiana at Punjabi Bhawan here today with Dr Chanchal Gupta in chair. Convention was  attended by over 200 persons from different sectors viz education, health, law, agriculture, home based workers and domestic workers etc. Ms Amarjeet Kaur, said that women have a glorious history in building the society. They played significant role in freedom movement of the country and thereafter in national building with all their might. But their participation in the decision making bodies has been very little. That is why it is important that we come forward and effectively make use of changing laws and also to have more laws to raise the status of women especially pertaining to the laws at work place.
Speaking on Status of Women during different phases of evolution of Human civilization said that patriarchy has been institutionalized through various stages of development after ancient periods of human history when men and women had no difference. But later in the feudal ages women were subjugated to men. Capitalism has tried to use them as a commodity. Our struggle is not for domination on male gender but a struggle for equality,  social and economic justice. Therefore we must strive for a socio economic order based on justice and equality.
Mrs Gurcharan Kochar, President Punjab Istri Sabha Ludhiana said  that there are certain forces in the society who still harp on the obsolete obscurantist ideas and do not recognise the changing role of women. There is need to change mindset in the society. Dr Narjit Kaur, convener of the AIWWF Ludhiana said that there is need to work jointly with right thinking men to bring about change in the mindset. Teen aged boys have to be taught in the family to give due respect to the women.  Moreover, she said, safe environment is essential at the work place. Barring a few essential sectors, women should not be put on night duties in the present scenario. Mrs Jeet Kumari, Secreraty Punjab Istri Sbha Ludhiana  said that implementation of law is very slow and te criminals get benefit of this. A woman who is the victim of the crime is also made accused on several accounts. Large number of participants narrated their experiences at the convention. Prominent among those who participated actively include Mrs Ramandeep Kaur, Mrs Kulwant Kaur, Miss Veena student, Mrs Prem Maur, Veena Kalia Advocate, Mrs Rajinder Kaur Bhatia, Dr Arun Mitra, Shri M S Bhatia, Shri D P Maur, Shri Gurnam Sidhu.
